FFXIV has gotten off to an angonizingly slow start. Growing pains galore! But where do you think the game will be next year? How about in five years? If the new development team is trying to make the game more like XI then will it end up being XI-2?

Leves will be increased to 10 every reset, and the reset reduced to 32 hours. Also, more leve camps and quests. Rewards and exp slightly reduced to compensate for the increased reward choice. Finally, the first 35 minute leve will be introduced.

I'm gonna go with, its literally impossible to say.
A couple of years ago, had you said the same question about FFXI?
If I had said they'll raise the cap to 99, and make it possible to get to the cap in a couple of days, people would have absolutely slaughtered me for even suggesting it.

However, I do think the game with definately be around in five years, for better or for worse. Whether that means operating the game on 1 server with an update every 6 months I don't know.

A situation like FFXIV's has never really happened before. There have been games that have flopped, and games that have been reinvented...but FFXIV's fundamentals never really exsisted in the first place. The game is literally an in development title being moulded into what the players are asking for.

Yeah, I think if it was any other MMO the developer would have given up on it before losing any more money. But SE will certainly stick with it far longer than most would be willing.

If FFXIV lives that long, we'd probably see two expansion packs, one of which brought the game to the PS3, and possibly the second to a next-gen console ~of the futuuuuuure~.

Again, if it lives that long, it would probably be FFXIV's strongest year, as FF fans decide about that time to give up their level 200 characters in FFXI and give it's ill-fated descendant another chance. People will play it on their iPhone 9s on the newly implemented 6G network and think the graphics are a little dated, but pretty decent for its day.

I don't understand the definition of "FFXI-2". FFXI-2 would mean that the whole setting would be changed to Vana'diel and they'd introduce characters from FFXI's universe. I don't think that'll happen.

I do think that they'll try to be less innovative and take risks though, given what happens, try and build a foundation of what works and bring in a lot of elements that made Final Fantasy well... Final Fantasy. In 5 years, there will probably be a PS3 release, a WiiU release (depending on Nintendo's stance regarding MMOs on their online service), and maybe Yoshi-P will open up talks with Microsoft.

In 5 years, I don't expect FFXIV to be anything ground-breaking or any MMO-killers or anything like that, who knows, people may never give the game another chance. But it all depends on how S-E handles re-advertisements, and welcome back campaigns.

Honestly, I think they've done so much damage with the release that they're going to be forced to go to a free to play model. This isn't bad, as some games have done this very well (DnD online being an excellent example). However, I think this will turn off a lot of players if it happens.

I'm not confident the game will still be up and running in 5 years. if it is, subs will be pretty low, (50K-100K), or they'll have moved onto some form of microtransaction model.

I don't really think the game is turning into FFXI-2, in fact I think its actually trying to just apply modern (wow-style) features to what they had now. Having said that, I think they'll continue to poll and adjust the game based on what players seem to be asking for, and trial and error their way through things until it sticks or people give up.

I agree, and I actually think it's hurting them overall. It's nice to be listened to, but the community is so torn over everything, even miniscule things, that there's no logical way that this game can really "progress".

LOL.

But honestly, I don't think its that bad. But like someone else mentioned, it is interesting that SE is taking these polls to see what players want, and the community is getting very particular. This could be a problem if the players continue to expect exactly what they want at every step in the games evolution. It's very possible SE only intends to do this until the game reaches a certain point, and then they may back off and say, "The game is good enough now. Let us have the reins back."

I really doubt this game will be around in 5 years, aside from the fact it's already on life support the launch of Squares brand new MMO in a year or two will kill what little will to live it has.

Low population games are never really fun or fulfilling, one of the reasons FFXI is still doing so well many years later is because it still has a large playerbase.

Due to planned changes, we still aren't sure when we will be implementing Chocobos, or what use they will serve. Rest assured this is one of our top priorities right now. Airships implementation/design is due to be reviewed post patch 3.5.

At this time there is no plan to adjust Anima, we just ask you all to be patient, I'm sure you will be quite pleased with what we have planned, or are planning on planning, someday..in the future... Until then just KEEP WALKING ********

IMO, if FFXIV even exists in five years, it'll most likely be as a F2P/goodie shop game along the lines of Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Hmmm..

FFXI had a better start so they had more subscribers to keep a steady flow of income. Yes, a 500k subscriber base is pretty good as long as it remains that way, the game will still be going 5 years from now, the question is in what form of course? Will SE, or Yoshi-P's team be able to turn the game around to a great game? To be quite honest, I don't think they'll be able to retain a healthy playerbase that's willing to pay for this game, at least if they continue to keep this pace. Then again, I have no vision whatsoever on the casual playingstyle of the current time, nor do I understand what would make people play this game. I'm on one those hard-core players that wants to get lost in a game and spend a considerable amount of time in the game, even though i DONT have the time to play that way anymore.

I guess I'll pass on making a prediction :p

No Idea...

It's not like I loved meriting on Camels either, or whatever the desert beachy area was in FFXI with Efts and Gobs... Thank SE for Aht Urghan...

ffxi had a better start because it was great. a working story with working mechanics and quite advanced graphics for its time. smaller zones full of live and character. I made my char in sandoria and felt at home right away. everything was just so right.

i dont see this game being alive in 5 years. the mechanics are just outdated and the copy pasted world is just uneventful and dull. none of the lil things that made ffxi great are here. no mog house no sense of home in the cities (since your just an outsider instead of a citizen)

with titles like guild wars 2 and tera coming that will crush this game even further into its coffin. sorry to sound negative but I was so dissapointed when I played this game :( I loved FFXI its my most memorable mmo experience ive ever had(had to quit cause of time restriction due to work/college/gf). and I played alot of them

I have to agree that FFXI is just about the best RPG I've ever played. Almost my favorite video game ever. Right up there with playing SMB for the first time.

If XIV is going to survive another five years they're gonna have to make major changes, and they claim that that is exactly what they're doing. Personally, I'd like to see the map get an overhaul. The copy and paste garbage in the game right now is boring and pointlessly big. I'd rather see a much smaller world where every square inch was unique and memorable. Even if the game world was so small, as expansions and updates roll out it would grow naturally. Wouldn't it be cool if they released an expansion that REPLACED most of the current map with a better design? Maybe even keeping mostly to the same themes and places and landmarks, but just made more carefully, and more interesting. Hmmm...

If it's still running in five years, it will only be because enough Japanese PS3ers have somehow been able to stomache it. The chances for high or even moderate English populations are shot. All I can say is, if there is intelligent life somewhere else in the universe, I hope they never come across FFXIV. They'll think we're some kind of ****** up.

Why am I still here if I think it's so bad? It's not lost on me how sad a commentary it is that I'm logging in tonight to work on Fishing 35 > 36 in a game I have so little respect for. But misery loves company, and one day has been slipping into the next, and the next..

LOL, this takes the cake.

I agree though, five years from now this game will have long been dead. This game will go down as the greatest MMO failure for a high profile title (if it hasn't already).

This, 2h's after starting off in sandoria i was hooked for the next 10years... 10 months after starting in Uldah i still feel like a stranger. I was exited to log in to XI, even days when i knew nothing would get accomplished. No matter what i accomplish in XIV i feel empty.

I would NOT be surprised if XIV goes the way of the Star Wars Onl. When the new SE game is launched... so in 5years xiv will be a memory, if not forgotten.

Then a year from them taking power, there will still be no sight of chocobos or airships.
