And you know what? Even after reading through every forum I could find, I still have a lot of hope for this game. My favorite MMO I've ever played is FFXI, and I'm not expecting an FFXI clone with updated graphics, but I'm still looking forward to some sort of atmosphere wherein leveling with a group is actually encouraged, and where it's possible for me to find a nice, friendly linkshell to group with. I actually like the sound of the fatigue system because I'm a student and I have absolutely no business playing for several hours each day (which I would be tempted to do without fatigue). As far as I can tell, the huge problems are a general lack of material (which will be remedied) and a completely worthless UI (which I hope to God will be remedied). The world seems small, but it'll get bigger, though I don't know if I want it quite as big as Vana'diel. Don't judge me for praising the game before I've played it - well, maybe you can judge me some, I deserve it - but I'm just feeling really optimistic about this one.

That being said, would anybody like to recommend me a server that has good, active linkshells and perhaps show me the ropes in-game when it finally arrives?

From what I remember they added some tutorial-ish stuff to help make it less impossible to know what you're doing. It may or may not be inadequate, but I think it will give you the basics that the manual leaves out. As far as server population I think Selbina, Besaid and Figaro were all popular choices. You might try the server forum section for those and see if any of the shells interest you.

Good luck to you. I'm one of those people who doesn't have much hope, but my best recommendation is to take it slow. There still is not a lot to do in XIV so you might burnout your fun factor if you play too much.

Rabanastre is a good server as well.

Welcome :-)

And hurry, since the new update coming may (and will) change the world.

Ick, I may not be able to play anyway. I just found out about the benchmarking program and my PC epically failed. So, I take it that my computer won't even be able to run it, period.

The game engine is very poorly optimized for PC. It plays rough on even top-of-the-line computers. Take it back. Save your money.

The benchmark is pretty worthless and I don't think it's been updated so you may be able to operate it at lower settings. I scored the highest score I had ever seen, but still had issues with it running on high settings during beta.

I had a friend come install his old copy on my PC last week and I'm able to push it quite a bit further than I thought I would. My rig is pretty beastly, but I had never expected to run at 64x CSAA with 4x super-sampling without melting my graphics processor. Depending on your GPU you might be ok with the defaults.

It benched horribly for me, but ran ok on a garbage box that I used to have.

Welp, I can't return it, but it was dirt cheap, so I'm gonna try it anyway. This old thing is ridiculously outdated but it always surprises me with its ability to run virtually anything with only marginally lowered settings.

Well I wish you luck! I think you'll enjoy it if you can play it. I play it for less than 10 hours a week and I have fun. Like many have said just don't play it a lot right now and you won't burn yourself out on it. It's good in small doses or for people with really busy lifestyles who just want an hour or two to do some mindless gaming for a bit.

If you need a linkshell, feel free to PM me. I am on Figaro Server.

Don't really let the negativity on these boards get you down. You bought the game and you know it's a work in progress. You're coming in on some changes ahead.

(To be honest, I really don't know why they post here if they don't have some sort of hope for the game's success, anyway.)

Haha, this is actually serving to give me some good motivation to try the game and like it out of spite. I know that it's not where it ought to be by any means, but I also respect Yoshi-P and I expect some good things out of any developer that enthusiastic and willing to reach out to the player base. I'm just going to play casually and see what happens.

The more you like FFXI the more bile you will spew when you actually try XIV for a week or so, anyway I know the kind of player you appear to be so you just have to find out the hard way. Good luck!

IMO I hear it's only $15 now, and since there's still no subscription fee, there's not reason not to try it. Even if you quit in a week or two, you're still going to get you $15 worth out of it.

I dont understand something, how can you respect yoshi P, when you have not even played the only game he has been a producer on ? wish half of its updates where already made by the old team, and the only thing he has done is talk talk talk talk talk, and nothing else lol

I think a lot of people are impressed with his talk talk talk. It's not very common to see such openness from SE, and while progress is going slow (VERY SLOW) at least he is keeping us up to date.

This. FFXIV tries (and fails) to cater to a different crowd than FFXI despite only being marketed to the FFXI crowd. It won't take long until you're banging your head on the keyboard wondering "why did they do <something>, they got it right in FFXI years ago!"

Now that is just no true. Granted this game does have a lot to be desired for, but that doesn't mean the OP is going to hate it. There are many things about this game that I enjoy that XI, for me, just can't compete with.

Op, here's to hoping you do like it, but we won't hold it against you if you hate it like Bsphil up there :P

Hey now, let's not get crazy here. bsphil doesn't need to be capitalized. Special rule, even for the beginning of a sentence. Check it, it's in the back somewhere...

I would advise refraining from such a hopeful outcome altogether. If you've had any experience at all in the video game industry (online or not), FFXIV will fall short in every single regard.

Wow, XIV's worst enemy is it's playerbase (or former playerbase)

OP... I am taking a break now because I burnt out on the lack of content, but there is a lot of fun to be had when you are just starting out. Recently I actually made a ton of characters just to tool around, and I enjoyed myself.

Just don't try to mega grind it, and you will probably enjoy yourself.

Honestly, it's been fun so far. I haven't done much, but it's enjoyable. I just need other people to play with now. XD Everyone's so focused on soloing! Maybe after r20ish I'll start to see more party-oriented players. (Also, it's so very pretty for an MMO. That makes me happy.)

In my opinion, the most important think we will want to do is foind a nice Linkshell to play and comunicate with. Playing to "friends" will make all the diference.

Your thoughts here look very familiar to me. It's nice to see that you like the game so far and lots of people hope that the game will become more (serious) party/cooperation orientated than it is now. An with cooperation I do mean a group of 4-8 in where understanding your job is a key factor for success, not one of those let's-invite-anyone-at-the-crystal for hack'n'slash who-cares-who-is-doing-what "fun". Because in those parties you do not even have to communicate either...so many people just don't.
