Letter from the Producer, XIV (07/09/2011)
Grrrreetings! It's Yoshi-P here again with a Letter that has the same number as our game, XIV!

I woke up this morning on an overseas plane and realized that our beloved game is actually not that good. I wish I had realized this sooner--I would not have joined the development team if I knew just how bad it actually was. I even played the game once about a month ago, but it just didn't sink in, I guess.

FFXIV was rushed into development because Yoichi Wada lost some money betting on goose fights and wanted some of Warcraft's market share. Rumor has it that only 3 people worked on the game, each for about 2 weeks, before it was presented to the executive board. Tanaka's powerpoint file didn't work, and he was quoted as saying, "Just trust me." Thus it was released into alpha testing.

In hindsight, none of us knew what we were thinking. An eight year old boy was brought in to come up with the jobs, abilities, and battle system. Fear not, emboldened adventurers, he has since been fired.

Once the game was released into beta testing, most of the development crew went on an 18 month vacation to Ouagadougou, which they are still on. We actually have not heard back from them, nor have we been able to find all the backup emergency funds or the **** collection that are usually here at the office. But at least they left behind some sketches of a black mage that we were able to release a few months ago.

The remaining crew here at Square Enix in Tokyo had a last minute board meeting, and one of our younger associates came up with the brilliant idea to avoid responsibility and just keep issuing random "Letters" and other such nonsense to try to delay the inevitable as long as possible. The dungeons we are "working on" don't actually exist. Ideally I would report that all the other upcoming content is fake as well except that we haven't mentioned any other content besides the two fake dungeons.

In closing, I just want to say that I am terribly terribly sorry. Just horribly grief stricken and ashamed. If anyone finds anything enjoyable about FFXIV, like Maim for instance, just write to us at the website and we'll be sure to nerf it.

Signing out,
Yoshi-P

This was posted on our linkshell communities forums, and I just had to share it. haha

it's common on the internet to use the phrase "lol", even if it's just out of politeness or to break tension, or if you never actually laughed out loud. Well sir, this is not one of those times. This is one time that I did in fact laugh out loud.

LOL!

If you didn't have a laugh at this, you need to seek therapy. Maybe patch 1.18 will restore something more important than faith in SE, maybe it will restore some people's sense of humor on these boards.

Well, if you're laughing at something that's not funny, then that would be insanity, and I think that would call for therapy.

Why is that ? The game is still as horrible as it was on release, except a few updates here and there(Nothing to give credit for anyways)

This wasn't bad either, I don't know why people would be so ultra serious at the moment - we've got a couple weeks to kill. Take it easy, nobody's launching personal attacks at the Yoshe man.

1. Friday was 2 days ago, so it's not a happy friday thread and the title is exceptionally misleading for a community who's somewhat desparate for news/feedback

2. I personally didn't find it amusing at all, but hey it appears some folks did so good on them and the OP

I will say one thing for it though, at least I realized within the first sentance that it was a spoof. I'm going to guess for some others it took quite a bit more reading before they came to that conclusion.

Sorry, but I have to agree with Dr. Mog and Perrin. It's obvious its a troll, but I still found it to be in bad taste. I know we shouldn't lose our sense of humor over a video game, but the developers should get the respect they deserve. They know their product isn't up to par and are working hard to fix it. Think about how they must feel when they read about how horrible terrible the game is even through all of their hard work. Personally, I know I wouldn't be happy knowing that I'm putting a lot of hard work into something and then other people do things like this to.

For what exactly?

I've really tried to see from your perspective, but as bad as this game was on release and as little as they have added since then, I really don't see a cause for it. Regardless, everyone knew(or should have known) it was a joke from the beginning. Why take it so seriously?

Agree about being respectful to the devs. I crack jokes about the state of the game often, but I don't see the need for slamming the current dev team. So far they've held up their end.

That said, keep in mind this letter was posted on this guy's ls forum. I'd be more likely to post something like this for just a small group of friends.

If I was a developer or even the main producer I would laugh at it as well and think "just wait and see". I would only feel offended if I was indeed (co-)responsible for the original game as it was launched last year and still feel that it was a good product.

Furthermore, I would also accept the fact that gamers (in general) know everything better than I do and demand the almost impossible within an impossible timeframe. And that since this is the internet even the people whose only connection to the software industry is that they live near the brother-in-law of the janitor of a software company are able to tell established game developers (they would love to work for, even as the new janitor's assistent) how to get things done. Because if I would not accept that, I would be forced to brush my teeth with gin after my JD breakfast just to make life more bearable.

Peronally I think that the fake letter has its moments, but then again... it's a fake letter. I could come up with similar words but the whole idea of a fake letter just doesn't do it for me.

Rated it up, for effort and a few smiles. Now let's now hope that we'll be getting ten copycats trying to pull a similar joke.

BTW... since when are we allowed to make people think for half a second that something serious on a friday an friday only? Kind of far fetched if you ask me.

The only part I found remotely witty about the piece was the line on the drawings of a black mage. That was actually a good line.

The rest of it, not so much. Either way, my faith in this game remains so long as people take the time to post negatively about it. It's confirmation of the FF franchise value.

Since the new team took over we haven't really seen all that much. We have roadmaps and a bunch of letters that say "We're taking a look at..." or "We are considering adding...", but I don't see much in the way of results. We know that the next 3 patches are supposed to be major, but they've been way too long coming in my honest opinion. They are still implementing things that should have been tested a year ago. Months from now they will be implementing things that they received feedback on a year ago.

I definitely don't understand why they should be exempt from people poking fun at them. ****, if I were a developer I would make fun of myself if I were in their situation. When you are responsible for something that nearly everyone dislikes, you need some sort of coping mechanism to help you through it.

We do have some things by which to judge Yoshida and the current development team: the sidequests for one. And they were and still are an absolute and total travesty. A good friend of mine and white knight who initially encouraged me to purchase the game was devastated by the disaster that was the ****** side quests; even he stopped playing and was utterly dejected by them.

This isn't necessarily the team's fault, however, because we don't know if SE is giving Yoshida and the team the adequate financial and human resources necessary to make a quality game. But as far as I remember since uninstalling the game, the only thing the Yoshida team has done is phased out the bell holidays, increased the size of mobs so that the pixelation is more noticable, and implemented some ******, half-baked sidequests. Feel free to clue me in on any other stunning achievements I may have forgotten.

Credit is usually earned after good results, not before them. Yoshi P owns this game now, and until the results of his efforts bear fruit, they don't mean anything. Granted what he has talked about, and said, do look promising. But that's all they are promising. And promises don't give you credit, living up to your promises do.

I want FFXIV to succeed a lot, but I'm not willing to give Yoshi P anything until the game is out of the ditch.

Either way, I didn't think the letter was funny, but not because I thought it was disrespectful, just not my style of humor.

There are ways to make a joke about something that are actually funny, and for me personally this just wasn't one of them. I criticize the state of the game as much as the next guy, but I just thought this was a complete waste of my time. I didn't find it funny, I found it stupid and a lackluster effort at comedic humor through ridiculous exaggeration.

That being said, had this "fake letter" been actually well written, it would have had some potential. Too bad it was just crude and in poor taste, at least in my opinion.

The OP was amusing at times, and I found it to be pretty inoffensive. Most of the insults were very lighthearted. I read the comments first, and then the OP, and I was really surprised there was such a backlash. I expected it to be much more offensive.

Perhaps the people who are angry were fooled into thinking it was real, and are embarrassed about that?

whether you found it funny or were offended by this obvious joke post... the fact remains that atleast some part of the post hits close to home. those that find it funny think about their own thoughts of the game and how in synch with those thoughts the post was, and those that are offended are only offended because atleast in part its kinda true.

Watch a truly great but controversial standup comedian and the points of his/her rutine that either offend on make you laugh the hardest are the parts that you can relate to or are based on truth.

in other words lol or not the reaction to this post indicates that no matter which side of the fence you sit on you all think its at least partly true.

Semantics. Offensive, bad taste, whatever. Don't care. I think Yoshi-P is tough enough to take the heat from a joke post on a forum he doesn't read. Get over it.

By the way, lol@analogies. Comparing to the women's rights movement? Smiley: lolSmiley: lolSmiley: lolSmiley: lol Yes, MMO development is basically like fighting for equality among the sexes. I'd say a better analogy for this thread would be if someone thought I was in any way upset/irritated by the tone of my post, when I'm really just bored and passing the time before I have to take my car in for emissions.

I don't think your hurting the "white knights" its pretty easy how some people wouldn't find it funny.

I thought it was written well but its obviously fake, also its heavily over exaggerated and didn't have any subtlety to it. It sounded more like it was using used the guise of the producers letters, and the fun of the happy friday's threads and used it to hide behind an opinion of the game.

I just clicked on the thread thinking this was going to be something interesting and it just felt like i was reading something written by a butthurt fan with the mentality of "I thought FFXIV was going to cure my life long boredom and give me a sense of purpose like wow does for wow fans!"

Seems tolls will always revert back to calling anyone with an opinion other than their own "white knights."

Get a new comeback, or criticize my reasoning instead of my stance on the subject. It makes you look stupid calling people White Knights for having an opinion other than your own.

**The above is directed at anyone who can take a joke (OP) but cant take it when someone doesn't like what they do**

I made it pretty **** clear "I meant no disrespect" (quoted myself there) by saying I didn't find it funny.

Get over yourselves.

If people can't understand someone's point of view, they just make fun of it or mock it instead. Or they just hit the rate down button. It's rather sad, but meh, it's a forum.

And white knights will always revert back to calling anyone with an opinion other than their own "trolls." It's a vicious cycle that only the real trolls win at.

But on a serious note, I did say that I meant no offense to the OP by my post, not sure how much clearer I can make my opinion without starting a debate.

Seems its fair game to bash FFXIV around here (on the FFXIV boards no less)

But as soon as a player who likes the game defends it, or refutes someone who doesn't, they get the backlash.

You could say Im just doing to them what is being done to me!

/white knight face on

When the point of a discussion forum becomes not to start a debate, the trolls have truly won indeed.

The only difference between a white knight and a troll is which side of the argument you are on. It isn't that you meant disrespect, it's the fact that you and others were obviously butthurt about the OP.

Its personal preference and all, but yes we need to educate WoW players that this is OUR game, these are Characters and not Toons. Time to beat that into them one at a time.

A white knight, used as a pejorative, is a self-appointed defender of someone that needs no defense. Not a hero of the helpless and downtrodden, except so far as the white knight himself perceives them.

A girl--that is, a person endowed with all the moral agency and higher brain functions of a typical human being--playing Team Fortress 2 does not need a complete stranger to intervene when someone calls her a ************ pyro."

By the same token, a multibillion dollar corporation like SE does not need people on an internet forum defending their game. The quality of the game should be self-evident, but they alone have all the resources they need to correct any shortcomings their game may have.

A white knight is not at all similar to a troll. A white knight genuinely believes in what he says and does. A troll will do or say anything for the biggest reaction, independent of what he actually believes. It is entirely possible for a troll to purportedly favor an unpopular person/thing/belief without being a white knight.

One question to ask is, "how can I tell the difference?" But a better question to ask is, "why should I give a ****?"

Come on guys, the only thing the OP in my opinion could've done otherwise is putting the line at the bottom of his post at the top....
It's a joke, which im sure if Yoshi-P would read it himself he would smile and say to himself "these guys are nuts, wait till you see the game when im finished with it". And we will see, in a year or two. Timing might be iffy, I also was suspecting something substantual, but I was also laughing out loud. Humor comes in many forms, this might not be very eloquently written, or with taste, but that's all very personal to everyone. It was very obvious in the post that it was a joke and yes, maybe it should've stayed at the ls forum board.

I don't mind, I can roll with the punches. Would love to have a FFMMO that has a grand scale like FFXI had in 2006, but it's too soon to expect it from FFXIV now, I'll give it a year or so and then probably have a blast playing. Yoshi-P is doing a great job, I just hope he'll give me something I'll really like so I can start playing. Anyway, Lighten up guys! It was just a fake letter written by someone who's fed up with the current state of the game. The question is, do you count yourself among the fed up, do you have blinds on which you hide behind saying the the game is pretty while you actually think it's not, or do you actually like everything the game has to offer?

(Edited for being to early in the morning lol)
