Hello,

I just received my new gaming notebook today and installed FF14. For some reason i repeatedly get the message my Direct X device was not found and my game crashes. I have searched on Google for answers and have done a few things.

First i have updated both my vid card drivers and also my direct x from windows. No luck. I then downloaded a older version of direct x in version 9.0 and still does not work. I am at a loss please help!

First I would check your video settings in the FFXIV config. Make sure you aren't trying to play full screen at resolutions over the max resolution of your screen.

Then I would upgrade your graphics drivers to the latest ones available (again)

Finally, re download directx 9 here:

Hi Doctor,

Thank you for the response. The problem is i cannot change my settings in FFXIV because i can never get past the char selection screen. I choose my char and my screen goes black and then i receive the error message.

I went ahead and Re-downloaded the DirectX 9 and restarted my computer. The problem did not go away.

I also Upgraded my drivers again by going to the alienware website and inputting my service id in order to get the most up to date vid drivers.

Any other ideas?

The FFXIV config is a separate application to the game itself. You should be able to find it in the start menu SE/FFXIV folder. You can't open the config and the game at the same time, though.

do you meet the minimum requirments for FFXIV on your graphics

as only ATI and Nvidia GPUs from several years ago and younger are supported. It doesnt include laptop counterparts and intel grpahics are not support either.

what GPU do you have ?

Didnt know they made a mobile version of the 460. But as was mentions, go to your start menu -> Square Exit -> Final Fantasy XIV Config, set everything to the lowest setting, unclick all options, select Windowed mode, start you game, see if it runs, if it does, start over, increase settings, repeat.

GPU stands for graphics processing unit and is the same thing as a 'video card'.

If it's a new laptop and is running Windows 7 this shouldn't be an issue.

Download the latest WHQL(official version) drivers for your GPU(video card) directly from nVidia and make sure you select the option to run a clean install(remove old drivers before installing new drivers). I have the same GPU in my laptop and I remember having issues with other games because I didn't do a clean install.

If for some reason the software doesn't prompt you to do a clean install you can go download Driver Sweeper. Run this program and select only the checkboxes labeled 'Display'. After running the sweep, restart your laptop and run the WHQL driver file you downloaded from nVidia.

Its personal preference and all, but yes we need to educate WoW players that this is OUR game, these are Characters and not Toons. Time to beat that into them one at a time.

Filthmcnasty- I went and did this method. I dled the official version and did a clean install.. Still no luck.

I have discovered that i can play in full screen mode through the use of trial and error in the ffxiv cong screen with no problems. So i guess i will just do that since windowed mode seems to be buggy for me...

You aren't trying to run anything else that uses DirectX.... Screensaver, 3rd party Desktop effects, other games, etc. ?
