The next update will justify the reason for a universal repair item(s). It might be safe to say that materia will eat up slots when an armor is changed into a materia, and it may also be safe to say that the gear will need to be at 100% in order to turn into materia.

With these two simple ideas in mind it brings a lot less stress to creating the materia system and the overall value of repairing gear will be based on the materia it can create. In a sense crafters will have two new markets opened to them once materia is introduced.

The first market will be the demand for 100% repair to turn a piece of gear into materia, then the second demand will be infusing said materia into another piece of armor. One thing I wonder though is how will materia work? Will it work like repairs where a person puts it in their bazaar along with the gear they want infused and the crafter simply agrees to do it and if they succeed the materia is infused into the gear and they obtain the reward. I think that would be the best way to do it unless they can implement a craft system where you don't have to trade gear to the crafter and hope they give it back to you lol.

When it comes down to materia they could make the cost of each attempt be shards/crystals/clusters based on the materia being infused in the armor so overall I don't see much concern for crafters and believe that with the upcoming update they will have a more defined as a class in terms of bringing support to their fellow adventurers.

Ha. I read that and I have to agree. Instead of actually fixing some of the more unique parts of FFXIV that set it apart from other mmorpgs, they are just axing them.

In the short run it makes for a more fun experience but like eating a bag of candy for supper, it doesn't end up making you happy in the long run.

Because finding materials to repair gear was where the fun was, right? >_>

My point was they should have fixed it so that it WAS fun. Keep the uniqueness, make it fun. Don't water down and axe stuff. <_< At this point they might as well just take equipment wear out entirely.

Now I'm going to have to level EVERY effing craft (except cooking and fishing) up to the same level as my MAIN JOB to be able to harvest and repair stuff??? That's NUTS!

The rank requirement for repairs remains the same. If you could repair your r30 gear with your r20 craft class before, then you can still repair it now. The only difference is that the material used to repair it has changed from something that was more realistic to a piece of rock with the properties of duct tape. If you know the rank that each piece of gear you use was crafted at you can work out what ranks you need the crafting classes to be to be self sufficient in repairs. At the very most you would need to take a crafting class to 40 to be able to repair every item repairable by that class.

As far as obtaining the Dark Matter, the drop rate in gathering is quite low, so I wouldn't depend on that to supply your needs. Keep an eye out for leves offering it as a reward. The main way you will get them is to buy them from a NPC. Personally I have made quite a lot of money so far with repairs as people who know the cost of DM but can't do a repair themselves tend to add 500, 1000 gil or double the cost as the reward for repairs. They money I make there as profit I consider the funds I use to buy DM for my own repairs.

That's true; I think you're right. SE clearly began with the idea that crafters would be essential to everybody's ability to play, but they forgot to make the system balanced and, perhaps more importantly, fun. Now, not having the time to invent a good system, SE has to hastily undo their mistakes, thereby removing some of the creativity behind the original design.

Maybe they should make it so that equipment can be repaired over 100%, up to 120% perhaps; I'm not sure. Like everything else, crafting and gathering needs a lot of attention. I wonder what kind of game we'll end up with by PS3 release...
