With all the complaints about SE's patcher, I was wondering:

How long did it take you to download Patch 1.18?
0-30 Minutes:16 (20.8%)
30 Minutes - 1 Hour:20 (26.0%)
1 Hour - 2 Hours:13 (16.9%)
2 Hours - 4 Hours:13 (16.9%)
More than 4 Hours:15 (19.5%)

(about 50 minutes for me)

After getting to only 10% after 10 minutes, I remembered that I turned off the port forwarding back in March. Once I turned that back on, it was finished in less than 20 more minutes.

Edit: Using the patcher, never needed an external bittorent client. I do wish I could limit the upload speed in the patcher, though. It tends to saturate my bandwidth and slow everything down.

Set the patcher away and came back to find that it was piddling away at 3kbs and taking forever. Then I remembered my IP changed and reset the forwarding rule up on my router. Now cruising at 440kbs and an eta of 16 mins!

Left it on overnight and it's done 10%, reporting 22 hours to completion. Opening my ports didn't seem to help at all.

Now I'm doing a direct download of the patch that somebody uploaded. 2 hours left? I guess that's okay.

Left it on when I went to work. I just came back and it was at 66% going at 150kbp/s until it suddenly dropped to zero and stayed there. Next up: uTorrent.

Gad that's not good, I did the same thing but haven't got home yet. Hope the thing is close to finished when I do.

I use FFXIV's updater with better than adequate results; over 1mb/sec just after the patch went live.
Never had to set up any port forwarding or anything of the sort either.

Can someone explain to me why opening ports on a router makes the official patch downloader work better?

It's not because the official patch downloader is completely broken--it works fine for non-new patches. If you re-install FFXIV, you'll get all the old patches just as quickly as utorrent (at least I did)--even if there's a new patch out at the moment that people are gobbling up. When I installed a few months ago, it was when a new patch was released, and all the old patches streamed quickly to my machine, while the latest patch was crawling; switched to uTorrent, and got it in less than 30 minutes.

Is it possible that the official patcher is somehow throttling your bandwidth depending on how much you've uploaded and how much demand for download there is? And somehow opening up other ports bypasses this?

12+ hours.

My latest router (the one that allows me to not get 30002 error every 5 minutes) does not support port forwarding for ports over 55000. I would normally fix this.

But really, the amount of time I've spent troubleshooting FFXIV is just shameful.

I'll just let it limp along and go play something fun.
