Hello i was just amazed how much SE has changed prices for the starting tools in the game such as:

Bronze Sledgehammer for 960 gil, which was the old price and now they are sold for 24k.

why the sudden change in price and to such a outrageous price?

Because you get said tools for free if you start out as whatever job, so they should be available cheaper in the market wards via previous owners or from crafters. My guess would be putting some need back on crafters.

the starting tools are rare/ex so they can't be sold in the wards.

Doh! Perrin -10 internets

In that case I have no clue, especially since they lowered the gil intake

I don't know - there's a lot of things in the NPC shops that have some really outrageous prices. It was the same in FFXI, and it seems to have carried over to here. Starter, no quality, non-crafted gear bought from NPCs should be reasonably priced.

Sounds to me like this is the beginning of the gil sinks that everyone wanted. Anyone else think so?

I doubt it's for a gil sink. Sure, someone might be silly enough to buy it, but meh. Chocobos, Airships, etc. will be your gil sink. I think the ridiculous vendor prices are to promote market wards and the community having a larger control over it's economy.

That's what I was thinking. Everyone in the game has 10m+ gil just from leves and messing around. 24k might seem outrageous, but really that was like a half a leve before the changes (and if you traded in 2's).

If it's the off hand tools you're talking about, weren't they originally rank 1? I remember them changing the rank on off hand tools from 1 to 10 early on, and subsequently raising the price on them. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that's why it changed, and a while ago at that.

You might be right, but I never purchased any equipment from the vendors. I found it was cheaper to buy stuff at the Wards a few ranks higher than I needed so I could grow into it. I'm guessing others did the same, thus I overlooked the fact R1 stuff isn't sellable >.>

yes they were rank 1, yes they were cheaper than there weathered counter part. the reason they jacked the price was because the stats are alot better than the starting gear...which didn't make sense. considering you could craft anything with a pair of pliers during launch day didn't help that either. they've since then increased the off hand tool prices & levels and made recipe specific to the main & off hand gear

How does a newbie harvest hemp when there's no cheap level 1 Weathered Scythe available?

switch to a DOW/DOM and kill marmots outside Gridania or Ul'dah, they drop moko grass, wich is made into hempen yarn by weaver, or save up to buy a scythe

edit, Also I got my rank 10 bronze scythe as a reward from a rank 1 botany leve
