FFXIV success comes with an 18 rating?Follow

I keep an eye on FFXIV somewhat and I've noticed lately they are trying to turn the game into something more sexually appealing and maybe even attract the ERP players from games like WoW. The bikinis, revealing and rather slutty clothing, cringeworthy NPC chat and suggestive emotes are of course a sign of this marketing direction but how far do you think Square will eventually go with it? Fully nude characters, **** underwear, more sexually suggestive emotes? and will they be willing to push the rating to an 18 to attract the kind of players that want this kind of content? Indeed for people that play now, do you want the game to go in this direction and attract that kind of playerbase?

It's a neat marketing ploy for a game in this kind of situation but I'm genuinly curious how much further they are willing to push it, I know this kind of thing is common among ftp korean MMOs but it's kinda suprising to see so blatantly in a mainstream MMO.

I'm sure that the Ul'Dah NPC's hinted towards prostitution, drug taking, and other naughty activities when the game was released... I seem to remember talking to people about it because I was quite surprised myself.

But my thoughts are that people grew up with FFXI, and good as it was, it wasn't really "adult". So they tried to do that with XIV.

It would have worked. It's just a shame that the initial game was a pile of crap, really.

I think they're just trying to take advantage of the one thing that this game actually has for certain, and that's impressive character models. Hard to imagine them taking something so mainstream and making it adult only; they're just looking to get the most out of their Teen rating.

OP is using a slippery slope to get 100+ replies. Classic.

Women having a midriff, bikini-clad buttocks and modest busts is well within a T rating, mom. Very offensive language and total nudity will never come to FFXIV, except in the form of creative "adjustments" to the game made by players. It is more difficult to successfully market an M-rated game* than a T-rated game, and it is **** near impossible to market an M-rated MMO. SE could not afford it, and would be more-than-FFXIV-on-release-day foolish to attempt it.

I find the suggestive chatter--from pirates and other lowlifes--is better interpreted as an immersion device than a desperate attempt to offend your sensibilities. This isn't Duke Nukem Forever. SE does a fair job of illustrating the wealth disparity in Ul'dah and the coarseness of the LL pirates by not whitewashing them for political correctness.

Pirates drink. Pirates make lewd jokes. And on top of all this, pirates like tits and *** and have been known to @#%^ a woman or eight. You knew this before you began the game. Are you shocked that it's all true?

Edit:
*Long-standing M-rated franchises not withstanding. A T-rated franchise "going mature," like Prince of Persia that one time, will receive notoriety for the change, but it may or may not actually move sales. Results are typically bad.

I can't see how bikinis constitute a move toward an 18 rated game in any way and the handfull of suggestive comments from some npcs even less so.

Mortal Online is 18+ with full frontal nudity, doesn't seem to sell.

Well, they didn't try to capitalise on the *** part.

Yes....the brilliant minds at SE will unleash big breasted naked mithra to help boost sales and subscriptions. Were there a lot of 14 year olds running around in FFXI? I can't recall ever meeting any but had more than my share of them in WoW. If it offends people they can always quit and go watch some good old American tv like Jersey Shore.

I would have no problem with this at all.

I don't think its a "direction" so much as it's just a few renderings they had laying around. You gotta remember it takes them something like 5 months from armor creation to implementation.

Yes, you merely didn't have to hear them due to the major populace of the game (within the first two years) terrified of even running Winamp or a Chattrilo client of some form due to mass stupidity.

IT'S A THIRD PARTY APP IMMA GET BANNED!111!!!!

ffxi had bathing suits for events. its sort of a traditional thing more than a new **** business plan on the part of SE. but good job getting a lot of people(including myself) to talk about what is, let's face it, a non-issue.

These things were added into FFXI long long into it's life and they were more about being a swimsuit than almost naked, when they are putting dev time into making very skimpy swimsuits and rather naughty emotes when in total honesty they should have no time for such pointless stuff due to working on serious game issues/content you know there is something behind it. It's a marketing thing, *** sells a lot of things and I'm guessing they are hoping that's the case here.

I understand why they are doing the things they are doing I was just curious how far they will go with it to see an increase in subs and if the current playerbase would be happy to attract the kind of gamer they are aiming for.

Yoshi-P used to work on the Dragon Quest Monster Battle Road games, I think you are confused with a different Naoki Yoshida.

I thought that was just a mistake that happened when back when Yoshida was first announced to take over.

Quote:
[UPDATE]

It looks like there is even less information on Mr. Yoshida than we thought. I originally found this page among others, through chatter on Japanese forums. Despite having the correct picture and describing Yoshida as working at Square Enix, the games in the list are apparently for another Naoki Yoshida with identical kanji.

http://ffxiv.zam.com/story.html?story=24416

If I remember, that article was written listing Yoshida as having worked on Agarest War and the other games on that list, but later changed to the update I quoted above since it looked like it was a different Yoshida. Was this later proved to be our Yoshida instead?

Oh wow! Really?

I didn't read that update, just the original story. And this whole time I've been hoping for the fully-nude mithra update that will probably never happen now.
