A question regarding the broken database thread...Follow

Several people have said in the referenced thread that they would use Zam more if the database were more accurate. It seems our information is not up to date in all cases, and I was brainstorming ways to solve that problem. Since I can't be everywhere on the site at once, I have a proposal that I want to get feedback on. Sometimes, like earlier today, our database gets out of whack because of new updates to the game, and it requires a small tweak by the developers to correct things which we try to be on top of. Other times, for whatever reason, things end up being wrong anyway.

We have a system in place already that lets us see what comments have been made to the items database (and other areas of the site I believe) within the past 24 hours. I'm thinking about asking our devs to increase that timespan (or allow me to search for time frames myself), and I will work any comments with updated item info daily. At the end of each week I will post what items I've updated so you can see exactly what is being worked on and if your particular issue is fixed.

My question to you, the community, is this: if we did this, and tried to engage you guys as much as we can to make sure the database is as up to date as possible, would you consider using our comments system in the items db to point out where things are not correct and tell us what the correct info is, now that you know someone is going to be watching it daily for new comments and giving weekly feedback on what is being fixed?

Yeah, I would help as much as I can. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we appreciate the effort being made on the DB, not to mention the comprehensiveness of it when it's up to date.

Nothing's more convenient than searching for something you have no idea how to make and finding all the information you need within 3 seconds.

Yeah, I'd try to help, but I'm not even playing FFXIV at the moment. I don't think many people are, and that's more of the problem. I'd hate to see you develop a huge item database for a game that ultimately goes micro-transaction-supported and never gathers more than a few ten-thousands of interested players.

I'll try to point stuff out as I see them, even though last time I went to the trouble of gathering information to add to the database (monster levels), SE just made them readily apparent with a number next to their names Smiley: lol

Hint hint SE, just provide Zam with this information >__>

Yeah that is one difficulty, so much is still in flux it's hard to nail down what is changing with each patch. They provide notes, but there are little things like the delay you mentioned that are not overtly obvious.

why doesn't zam try a system similar to ffxiclopedia. updates are instant with people correcting things all the time (like myself i fixed a ton of quests and stuff), and the devs of ffxiclopedia has a sytem that alerts them when changes are made so if the update is rubbish they can easily change it back.

i know wiki that allow anyone to update info brings it's own problems, but for the maority people are pretty good about not being douche bags and giving false info.

My only issue with the Zam database is that there seems to be a fairly long delay in adding newly released items.

For example, other databases (FFXIV Pro, YG) added the Revolutionary's Bliaud within 48 hours of patch 1.18 going live, while it took about three weeks for the item to show up on Zam.

I realize that it must take an awful lot of work to keep everything up to date, but in every other respect (item searching/filtering, comments, screenshots, recipes, npc price, etc) you have the other databases beaten easily, so it would be a shame to lose traffic to slow updating.

If you say that there will be dedicated attention on new comments then i would be willing to start commenting on items/npcs again. A couple of my previous comments have not been updated in the data, so I kind of stopped for a while.

I keep a window up to the new comments page now.

One other thing, there seem to be a lot of mobs we have listed that drop Aldgoat Skin and Marmot Pelt that don't seem likely to be dropping those items. If anyone can confirm or deny that the mobs listed drop those items I would be very grateful.

Sure, I'd be willing to help.

Something else to consider is putting a sticky thread at the top of the forums for corrections. That could be a centralized location for problems that can't really be commented on. So, for example, if something's not showing up in the database, or if search functions aren't working, we'll have a place to let you know.

Thanks for your work on this. And thanks for trying to keep everything up to date.

My bosses boss thought of that idea too, the only problem is I like having the documentation on the Item itself, rather than in a separate thread. I have some good news to announce soon about rewards for helping out with the database that I think you guys will like. Should have something out later today hopefully.

Wint you should just give me access to the database so I can go through and edit entries. Problem solved. xD

Sure, but the problem is where to comment if there is no Item itself. If an item isn't showing up in the database, there's no place to leave a comment. And on the Lodestone thread, people were commenting how pants weren't showing up in searches. Where do they leave a comment? Do they have to track down every pant that should show up in the search, find a different way to locate them (other than searches), and leave a comment on each individual one?

Send me a PM if an item is missing, it will count towards your total contribution count.
