New players curious about classes.Follow

The wife and I are about to start playing and we keep hearing/reading bad about anything that's not archer/conjurer/thaum/gladiator. Are we really going to be harshly limited to only a few classes by the masses?

We're interested in playing Pugilist/Lancer but don't want to never be able to do anything.

Currently the game has one high-level activity, and that's the Dzemael Darkhold.

At present, due to the mid-boss' AoE attacks, folks tend to prefer one tank, minimal ranged attackers and massive quantities of healing as it is the path of least resistance.

The producer already has hinted that patch 1.19 will greatly alter current tactics. I'd say give all classes at least a little try and make certain you like what you're leveling. Once you're mind is made up, go for it. Don't let the opinions of a few folks playing an unpolished game sway your opinions on what you'd like to play.

And also, with the right friends, there's no such thing as not being allowed. My linkshell takes me in all the time. The ogre is a little rough for a Marauder == or any melee -- but my ability to efficiently tank adds at the main boss more than makes up for it.

I cannot speak for others, but for myself, I am greatly enjoying playing both Lancer and Pugilist. I personally do not think you nor your wife would find the experience at all diminished by playing as any class.

Thank you both, we appreciate it. Trying things out is a good idea, we haven't even played the game so other classes may appeal to us more.

Don't ever make your class choice based on the flavor of the month, in any MMO. Chances are by the time you get to the level where it's relevant, the flavor will have changed. Play what you enjoy, have at it!

That's good advice right there.

When it comes to sitting around not doing anything for long periods of time, only being active for short windows, and marginal changes and sidegrades I'd say FFXI players were the perfect choice for politicians.

As long as you don't suck sh*t, any DD is as good as any other. Except MRD, because their accuracy sucks no matter what you do. And ARC, because bows have such broken damage mechanics that it dwarfs the output of everyone else. And LNC, because they get haste and no one else does. And GLA, since you will usually have a defensive ability loadout for endgame content.

Yeah, go PGL and don't suck.

Your wife will have to play a CON because only women are allowed to cure in JRPGs. Hey, I don't make the rules!

Edit: Added helpful links for you ignorant children who only play CoD and WoW.

I think it's more of the final-boss. Ogre is lol-easy with melee (I've always gone in to poke at Ogre with a pointy stick now, it's faster than doing it on Archer), but the final-boss is kinda tricky when it comes to dodging eyes, ghosts, pulling skelly spawn and evading Kamehameha. Anyway, that will probably change again soon in 1.19 like you said and will have more than just Bartraal to kick **** so it's O.K for you to play any classes.

If anything, my beef-ed up Chaos Thrust is equal to beef-ed up Trifurcate/2x Multishot.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the classes getting a bit of shuffling coming up in the next few patches? What's all this talk I keep hearing about them reclassifying classes and such?

Truth is you will want to level several classes for their specific cross-class actions. An example would be getting Marauder to rank 6 so you can use Bloodbath when playing as another melee class. Its up to you to decide which cross-class actions will be at your disposal which makes your strategy and gameplay more interesting/individualistic.

With the current state of the game, I'd say ignoring any "this class sucks" advice is your best bet. Play what interests you most and keep in mind that if you don't like a certain class, you can easily change it by equipping the specific gear.

This simply isn't true. Although Hope was rather sensitive.
