Well that depends :) on the person. :P

So they just did two rounds of server merging for fun?

Given some of the reasons I listed above, coupling that with SE losing money hand over fist, merging servers makes sense. They made servers feel full and cut costs at the same time. Makes sense to me.
Then the game isn't as full as it was during WotG.

So several months before the release of abyssea then? Ok. Cool.

There was another server merge well after abyssea was released. What's your point?

The point was that FFXI is more 'new player friendly' than it was previously.

Server mergers were brought up by you. People quitting either temporarily or permanently is the obvious reason. Back in early 2010, amid the 'FFXI is dying' hype, you could do a '/sea all' and only come up with maybe 500 players during peak hours. These days you could break 2k players during peak. Server mergers were a bonus for a newer player. They made servers more lively and gave new players more options for grouping to do missions, quests or get experience if they wanted to.

SE effectively increased the ability to solo, the ability to farm gear in small groups and the ease in finding and making these groups on your own time. All of these things brought back many players who left and retained players who were considering leaving. The freedom and variety was something players welcomed and also welcomed new players at the same time.

I think they are wrong about people never coming back. I think most people who tried it out are fans of the series, and despite there being a lot of MMOs out there, there really aren't a lot of top notch/high quality mmos - most of them are garbage, frankly. Nevermind the fact that there are even fewer high quality MMOs with the kind of art style and world "feel" that XIV has.

I think most people who tried it were ****** off that they spend so much money and time updating their rigs and so forth just to play it. A company that rushes their new flagship title out early loses a ton of fans. I've been a Square fanboy since the original came out in 1990. I will no longer will purchase anything SE makes until I read a trusted review. This is all because of FFXIV's failed launch. I think you underestimate all the ****** off players that were horribly let down.

When XIV flopped I went back to XI, as did many people who I met in XIV. That says to me that there is a potential for those people to return to XIV someday.

That's not very likely Olor. FFXI has a community sorta, FFXIV doesn't by comparison. I think people will move on to another MMO besides FFXIV if FFXI declines.

This right there. My husbands loathes this game. Because he fusses about playing it so much, makes me not want to play an online game MMO period. FFXIV kinda in a way ruined online gaming for me...at this moment in addition to spending money to get an updated rig for my husband so we can play together...just left a very bitter taste in my mouth about online gaming now...

We even tried Rift, which I had fun playing, but I think FFXIV scarred my husband too much that he just doesn't seem to be enjoying online gaming like he did when we played XI :/ Thanks SE...>.>;

Lots and lots of stuff on the horizon for MMOs so I wouldn't give up hope just yet. GW2, sweater, a new PS and even an FPSish MMO coming soon. Even D3 might appeal to you.

Some people just burn out kinda, never really get anything like the same enjoyment as they do on the first MMO/ganes they played. You are going to have a really hard time if you are trying to base your enjoyment off his if that's the case, and the more you mention he doesn't seem to be enjoying them the worse it gets. From personal experience.

Yeah it seems that way. We havn't played FFXIV in about a month, and our Rift trial just ran out. So I think I won't bother really asking him about online gaming for a while. Bummer for me though.

If a new player took an hour to familiarize themselves with the game, maybe reading a newbie sticky in XI forums or something, they could knock out level 12 in one sitting. Assuming they stuck to EP-DC mobs they could probably do that in an hour. A new player could unlock subjob, get their license and unlock the quests to start getting abyssea stones on day 1 if they were committed to it. It doesn't take nearly as long as you think.

I just brought a new player into my shell (self-described "casual") and by day 2 he had started stones accumulating.

The game is way more new player friendly than ever before... the linking of AHs means that there is plenty of gear for most jobs up and affordable - and you need less gear to get to the higher levels anyway.

Sorry, but XI is better than it ever was before, anyone who thinks otherwise is wearing rose-coloured nostalgia glasses.

It may not be pulling in hordes of new players - but it has a very healthy playerbase with a lot of returning players coming back to it. Given that it was a niche game to begin with, and is almost 10 years old... It is really hard to imagine it being in a better position than it is.

It would be great if they dropped PS2 support and issued a new expansion and (optional/purchasable) graphical update along with a big "return to Vanadiel" campaign with an aggressive advertising strategy - but to be honest, the game is in transition right now - we just got another level cap raise today - and we will be on our way to 99 by early next year from the looks of it.

Once we've got a steady level cap, that is when I expect the devs to start looking at options in terms of revitalizing the landscape and adding new areas.

Anyhow, amen to the dropping PS2 support.
