Hello,

I have been playing for a couple days now, and for the most part enjoy the feel of the game now days. There are still some issues present (no official windowed-fullscreen mode option yet...) that amazes me with FFXI's learnings, the game is still decent enough to play for both my wife and I. The next big step is trying to find a decent Linkshell in game in the coming days, as of right now we're both running solo/duo however.

I do have some questions though, things I have not been able to find through Google, or just overwhelming compared to my FFXI knowledge.

1) In FFXI you could use the /shutdown command to exit the game and not have to worry about going through PlayOnline/character select/ect. Is there something like that in FFXIV, as I have not been able to find anything of that nature yet, and have been limited to the multiple logout menu options. More then a few times my kids have told us we left our games on when we hit logout and left the room, forgetting that we went to the character select screen from that point.

2) As of right now I am playing a Pugilist and rather enjoying it. I did enjoy MNK tanking in FFXI, and hand to hand combat in general even though my main was a DRG. There is one aspect I have not gotten a great grasp of yet, and that is the various Evade abilities. Is there a way to easily tell when you evade through counters, icon, or some other methods other then watching the combat log scroll by? I ask because, for a while I assumed when the icon lit up both the TP and the evade conditions were met, but this is apparently incorrect. I have found that the window for using Evade based abilities seem to be rather small and easy to miss.

3) The last thing is regarding macros and combat in general, which does slightly tie into the above question. Combat in FFXIV is much faster then FFXI was, and as such, usually I find that toggling between various menus seems to hamper my attack rotation much more then it did with my DRG in FFXI. Is there any way to have your three hotbars or macros bars available to see all the time, or are you more or less expected to continually swap screens like in FFXI? Could this also be a case of me simply overusing my abilities and not relying on my AA enough?

I believe that is it for the time being. Thanks in advance.

I should be getting back to actual work so here are the quick answers.

1. Nope, though I can't wait for them to hopefully implement this. (there hasn't been any official word of them doing so yet).

2. The window for a lot of the timed abilities is very short. Personally, I got used to reading the scroll bar; you may want to set up a chat log window for just battle actions if you're having difficulties reading it. I think over time you'll get a 'feel' for when those abilities are ready to use.

3. This has been a common complaint. At the moment there isn't any way to display all the action bars at the same time. I've heard they are developing a more friendly keyboard/mouse interface that may alleviate some of your pain.

Hope that helps. Oh and welcome aboard (^.^)b

2)The advice about filtering the chat log would help with that. Instead of doing that I watch the fight and also have Damage Display turned on(in Config > System). With that "evade" shows up in text where the damage numbers would show. So that's another option.

Also @ r12 pugilist you get the Featherfoot ability that boosts evasion. With that you get a buff icon at the top of the screen and it disappears once you evade an attack. So you could also watch that when you use it.

Thank you both for the info. I'll try to play around with my chatbox and whatnot today since I have a few days free now.

It is rather 'interesting' that SE seemed to forget so many of the attributes either core with FFXI (/shutdown) or eventually added later (Windowed-fullscreen option). I would hope to see both of those implemented at some point in the future.

Welcome to Selbina!
You joined the game during an interesting time with the changes that have already happened and the big changes coming down the road. If you have any questions in game please send me a /tell and I will try to help you with what I know(not much!) I don't have a lot of time to play but am usually on in the evenings from 7:30-10:00. I play a MRD and My character's name is Magnus Oshik. I've got a Level 21 Blacksmith if you need anything low level made just holler! If you are looking for an LS I just joined an awesome LS of very helpful and friendly folk. We are small but definitely good people, a few high levels and a few others just levelling up. Our LS name is Obscura. I am not a leader but the website is here
Laevitine Gransbal is the leader so you could try giving him a shout to find out more about the LS.

Any time, just ask :)

The more you play the more little things you'll find didn't make it over from XI. It's almost like SE learned absolutely nothing from the all the years of experience they had with their first large-scale MMO. I understand they were different development teams but really.. logic would suggest they'd share notes at least!

All-well. Hope you enjoy the ride!

So a quick update and another question.

I have leveled a few classes now. Pugilist 18, Lancer 14, Glad 12, and Mar 12 thus far. In Ul'dah there seems to be a lot of Glads, Lancers, and casters, and the Lancer and caster's makes sense from a classical MMO view of the popularity of DPS or hybrid classes, but the high amount of Glads seem weird to me with them being a tank and all (to the best of my understanding). With no /who, or any other form of player search I have found, is there any way to actually tell how many are playing particular classes at any given time? Only real population thing I have managed to find was THIS, and that is a bit out dated.

As for me, I am having a hard time locking down what I want to play. While Pug is certainly interesting, there is just something missing I can't set my fingers on just yet. Being that I used to be a DRG in FFXI, the idea of playing a Lancer is high, but Lancer seems to be a fairly overpopulated class just from my time people watching in Ul'dah. The last real choice is Marauder, which I have a history of playing great axe users going back to WAR all the way to UO. I am trying to level each to 18 or 20 and see where I stand though before making any particular choice.

/shutdown was not in FFXI originally, but it boggles my mind why they didn't just toss it into FFXIV, too.
