Quote:
The inexplicable happenings assailing Eorzea of late seem to know no cease; as one incident begins to fade into the dark reaches of memory, another emerges to take its place.

Recent moons have seen the nation in the grip of apprehension at the changes exhibited by Dalamud. Those who have an interest in astrology will know Dalamud to be the celestial body that orbits the moon in perpetual dance. For others the name will recall childhood tales of the loyal hound of the moon goddess Menphina, who would put to flight in a flurry of torn flesh and gushing blood those who meant his mistress harm.

Whatever it is Dalamud conjures up in your mind, lately it has taken on such an angry red hue, even those ordinarily indifferent to the affairs of the heavens have been hard-pressed to ignore the change. Verily, a growing number of citizens are seeing this as an evil portent. With a sanguinary eye seeming to glare down at all creation, you can scarce begrudge folk their sense of foreboding.

For some, it would seem this so-called “curse of Dalamud” has already become grim reality. During my investigation, I came upon rumors of a small company of Ul’dahn goldsmiths whose entire shipment of earrings was stolen—earrings themed upon the twin moons withal. My curiosity roused, I sought a meeting with the leader, one Master Joldewin, who related with unrestrained misery the misfortune that befell him and his two apprentices.

The earrings had been commissioned by the Adventurers’ Guild, he began, and were meant as gifts of gratitude to be presented to adventurers for their part in vanquishing the Bombards of the summer past. The earring’s design, which Joldewin proudly explained is of his own devising, comprises a single lustrous pearl to which a smaller crimson gemstone, wrought of meteorite found during the Bombard outbreak, is joined in a tasteful homage to the Keeper of the Twin Moons.

The goldsmiths toiled many a sleepless night that they might fulfill the order by the stipulated deadline. Here, and ever so briefly, an expression of joy formed on the veteran goldsmith’s face as he recounted the day the fruits of their labor were borne away by delivery caravans. Alas, the earrings never arrived at their intended destinations. En route to each city-state, the caravans were beset by—and I quote—“packs of overgrown white rodents,” who made off with every last earring.

As I sat dumbstruck, struggling to visualize a pack of rats bearing away ornate earrings—four to a crate, perhaps—Joldewin’s voice shrilled in anger as he revealed to me the loathsome individual he suspects to be mastermind behind the theft: the Lord of the Rats. Aye, you read true—that thief of legend said to hold dominion over all rodentkind, whose imaginary exploits have served to fascinate and frighten many a youngling at bedtime.

Most folk, upon hearing Joldewin’s story, would doubtless be inclined to think that he and his crew, despairing of meeting the deadline, fabricated an excuse out of their desperation to save face. I would be lying if I said the selfsame suspicion had not crossed my mind. Yet stranger things have happened, and I, for one, will not rush to pass judgment. Should your travels bring you within earshot of lamenting goldsmiths, dear readers, mayhap you could lend an ear to their side of the story, that you might discern for yourself the truth of the matter.

And here I take my leave of you. Till next time, may the Twelve watch over you.

Kipih Jakkya

So cryptic but no mention of emoting at them so thank god for that.

I hope we can hit these monsters instead of cheering them on.

Yea I didn't dig that last event much. I started it and got my first pinch of ash. Then realized you need more and just gave up. Sold the ash.

I really liked the Easter one though. Killing all those spriggans and finding the one hiding. But it's also good that they mix it up and not have them be nearly the exact same thing each time.

I buy that with bombs, maybe, I am assuming the idea is they are like a star, they burn at a specific rate, raising their temperature causes them to burn up much quicker.

But an elemental, a being made entirely of pure fire? I don't think that's what they had in mind when they came up with that expression.

SE is "trolling" us by giving us another relatively unique event?

Also, why do you imply that every event should have a real-life analogue? This is a game, after all, and maybe the red moon of Melphina (or whatever they call it :P) doesn't need to be based upon an extant holiday. I'm fine with having new things to do on both an Earth and an Eorzea schedule!

It's not that every event needs an analog in reality.

It's that people are becoming more and more irritable with the lack of simple content being created for standard play, despite events being rolled out regularly. I wasn't one of those people, but with the event schedule, there's narry a moment without an event. A break from the summer festival until the Halloween festival would have been fine.

For once I am wondering why the developers who worked on this event, were not instead creating lasting content, even something as simple as leves for new leve-less camps. We could have had a break from holiday events and no one would have complained.

These events are fairly simple, and I doubt they take too many man hours away from the actual content. It's just some quick, throw away content that hopefully will be fun for a bit, and give a little swag.

Yeah, I agree, which is why I usually don't mind. And don't get me wrong, I still don't really mind that much.

But levequests are even simpler to create than an event. Less writing, less scripting, less planning, no art asset creation whatsoever. Basically I'm saying, this event is stretching my ability to white knight when it comes to events. I understand major holidays and seasonal events, people will be disappointed if they don't come.

But something like this, I can agree that the man hours would have been better spent making more lasting content, even something as simple as adding leves to some of the outlying camps we still don't have leves at yet.
#28 Sep 03 2011 at 6:39 PM Rating: Good
And don't get me wrong, I'd much rather have some more Compay stuff to do, possibly some repeatable things than silly event stuff. But I won't complain if the reward for this is something nice.

Considering this popped up between the summer event and Halloween, it is probably a lore foundation for some larger game event come 1.19.

That, or Oktoberfest.

Except that it has jack squat to do with a harvest as far as I can tell. The "lore" of this event seems to be a continuation of the summer festival. I don't see any real life analog though.

Since the event seems to be related to the moon(s), and it's happening now in September, my hypothesis lies in the Mid-Autumn festival, otherwise known as the Moon Festival in countries with significant Chinese populations.

EDIT: Try the mooncakes being sold right now in Chinese establishments. They're delicious!

I would agree with that as in FFXI before US release, notably the Sept of 2002, there was Mid-Autumn festival where ppl chasing moon rabbit and get moon cakes(Moon Ball) , giving out Selene's Wand and alike equipments.
Since Japan was under heavy Chinese cultural influence in pre-industrial time, it is not hard to imagine there is still ppl celebrate moon Fest in Japan.

And please please please try the mooncakes.

Event just started. Went down to Halitai. Place is full of people fighting over r25 marmots to kill. Got 3 drops so far, a white walnut (Moon Nut) and a red walnut (Dalmud Nut) and the earring (Moonlet) . Not much by way of stats, and since it is unique you can only wear one at a time, not that I would as the first thought of mine when i put it on was it make me look like a Christmas Tree -> Picture

At this time being, yes. I am not sure if the other nut items will provide usefull. I ate one and it didnt do anything much. It could be crafted into some kind of nut dish?

I am not sure what the drop rate is oon the items tho. We hung out there for 10-15 mins but because the place is packed, it was hard to get claim on mobs.

It seems as though the smaller moon-eyed mice are level 15 (and drop Dalamud Nut), and the larger moon-eared mice are level 25 (and drop Moon Nut).

Looks like they can both drop the Moonlet (which looks cute on Rogue Muse by the way), but what caught my attention is that on bg someone talked about an even bigger level 35 mouse.. They were too low to kill it, but someone named Ambrosia said they saw it after killing about a dozen of the level 15/25 mice near Red Rooster Stead (La Noscea) during a full moon. They think it depopped as it was gone when they went back to the area.

Great... so we are suppose to kill squirrels...

When that NPC said kill those white haired rodents I thought he wanted us to hunt down and kill white haired lalafell...

Should have known Lalafell don't have the guts to rob caravans...

So what are the rewards other then the earring?

I have an accomplishment on my History page - Observed Hunter's Moon!, Rogue Muse (Gysahl) has valiantly slain a moon mouse during Hunter's Moon! There is also a new character background (had the marmots in the background on blue)

Edit: There is a second accomplishment available when you kill 50-60+ event mobs - Observed Hunter's Moon!, Gold Lion (Gysahl) has decimated the moon mouse population during Hunter's Moon! -> Link so there could be more to the event than just what is at first apparent.

We get a new portrait background on Lodestone too... Really just wish my gear would show up there though, sick of wearing underwear lol.

There's some discussion on the Japanese official forums about what the silver details are around the moon on the moonlet...

Relevant image here.

There was a dev response, but it merely hinted that whatever it was, it would be narratively significant in the future.

Some people said it looked like a bird in flight, or a cloud, but honestly I have no idea looking at it even close up. Anyone else?

I hope there's something more than two unannounced achievements a ball earring and lots of nuts to NPC if you don't eat them. I killed so many rodents waiting for the rat king to come smite me...he just made more rats.Smiley: frown

For me it's two Dragons (Wyrm style).

The Red Moon makes me think of the Lunar Cry of FFVIII.
