State of the Game? Part IIIFollow

Hello, it's me again. I recently read an article over at massively talking about a new patch that will change the ever hated "arbitrary limit," as I used to call it, of leves and thought I'd drop by and post another "State of the Game".

In case you don't know me, I was an old FFXI player who was very excited about FFXIV. I joined closed beta but the direction SE was taking FFXIV towards just wouldn't sit with me so I stopped playing shortly after open beta started. Now I come by the forums every once in a while to check on the players and see if they enjoy the game, hoping the game might be playable again. I usually ask a few questions but I figure that's a moot point...I really just want to know if you guys like the game or not. What do you like about it? What do you dislike about it? What do you wish was sunk to the bottom of the sea for leviathan to consume slowly over thousands of years?

Give me details folks.

I like the graphics

I don't like how easy it is, I don't like how there are almost no strategies, I don't like how boring it is, I don't like pretty well everything except for the graphics, which I like.

The game is an endless grind. Parties consist of 2 or 3 shotting things, solo consists of the same few moves over and over again for hours (kill things in 15-20 seconds nonstop). Quests are all boring, literally. They are meaningless, contribute nothing to lore, have no good rewards, and waste your time.

The new "company" quests + raids are -decent- but nothing comparable to almost any other MMO out there.

Its free, so why not give it a shot and just see if you like how it is now

To me, all of the major issues that the game started with still exist.. Server/client relationship is embarrasing, attributes/gear mean little, the class system is bland and homogenized. I could go on.. Almost devoid of content, in particular, content that isn't insultingly easy. Awkward UI that still lacks many basic functions.. All those large chunks of environment that were copy pasted 50x over? Still unchanged.

That's not to say they're not trying to improve all of the above. But it's September again and we're still stuck with a poor gaming experiance. The most optimistic you could be.. Is thinking this storm they've brewed up will end in early 2012, and all of the issues I mentioned have been addressed. Personally I don't respect the game on an intellectual level, so I'm less than optimistic.

I should add that.. While they're putting most of their eggs in endgame, there's no endgame to speak of. If I'm remembering correctly, the endgame they imagined concerned PvP and large scale PvE? I'm still waiting for one solid endgame platform.. Sky, Sea, Salvage.. Anything that reminds me of that. It doesn't even have to start with an S. I question whether we will ever receive a legitimate endgame event/area.

Speak for yourself; it most certainly does have to start with an "S."

You forgot the first one of them all: Dynamis, and didn't start with an "S" :P

I always assumed it was called Sh*t Dynamis. Because everyone was always telling me: "Sh*t Dynamis starts in 15 minutes. Gotta go."

Were you a bad tank or something? This was the universal excuse for leaving a group because it sucked <_<

Its personal preference and all, but yes we need to educate WoW players that this is OUR game, these are Characters and not Toons. Time to beat that into them one at a time.

the problem was that it was way too long. when dynamis rolled around everyone knew they were in for a 3 hour grindfest for little or no rewards.

now that they changed dynamis it's been much more fun then it was before, and not nearly as long.

The minimum requirements to have fun have been met.

The Good:
1.) Targeting is acceptable (not optimized, but no longer impossible).
2.) Playing in an SP party is now fun and rewarding.
3.) The repair system is now acceptable. Actual damaged status begins at 35%,
4.) Fatigue has been removed.
5.) There is an incentive to Rank up now. In the form of the 45+ Dungeon with good gear drops.

The Bad:
1.) Unfortunately, the unbalance of the classes has made only certain classes desirable for the 45+ dungeon.
2.) I predict, once again, Archers will be getting a nerf.
3.) The Market wards are still just a tad under acceptable. They function, but it's unecessarily complex.
4.) Items dropped from Overworld NMs are only better than standard gear for 2~5 Ranks. I think this is to balance the fact that these items are so easy to acquire.

The Ugly:
1.) The patcher still sucks hairy balls. If you can't forward your router's ports for whatever reason you will have to wait overnight for downloads or torrent them. I predict this will never be fixed and may become the downfall of the PS3 release.
2.) The payment system remains so complex that you will never see a merely casually interested player get past this step. If you go with Click'n'buy you will surely WTF?! many times before you actually get to play. Funny that this is still keeping people from playing even though the game is currently free to play.

These 2 items may never be fixed. All the game improvements in the world will not help revive FFXIV if people cannot access it with ease.

Summary: If you get past the intial sign-up, you can now enjoy a game that includes the minimum required functions for playability. You will not be overly hampered by meaningless timesinks. It is now possible to log in and just have fun.

I want something of what you are having, because there is no incentive to rank up really, there are 2 dungeons one 25, one 40+ after you do them 3 times, thats it, they are not shinie no more, you are back to sit in uldah and afk like 90% of the game population do
