Both games are being run simultaneously and have Dev teams working on features for both. There is no indication that FFXI will be stopped in order to focus on FFXIV, and I don't think there would be as FFXIV still has a lot of issues that need to worked on. SE wouldn't give up a working game with paying subscribers to lose them if they didn't want to play a in-development game like FFXIV

I'm not sure how many more people are playing FFXI right now than FFXIV, but it is a lot. So, no FFXI is in no danger of being replaced any time soon.

FFXI will continue living as long as people are paying to play it. FFXIV hasn't even started charging yet so it would be illogical for them to shut down FFXI anytime soon and lose all revenue from their MMO's.

I wouldn't expect them to do it at least for another 2-3 years if not longer, if ever at all... nothing wrong with having two MMO's running at once.

In all honesty, I think that was SE's initial intent. People who played XI would have an interest in XIV, therefore they'd switch over. It would explain XI's current trend of increased level caps every few months and new (from what I understand,) easier content.

However, because of FFXIV's poor reception, you won't see XI go anywhere for a while, at least until/if XIV can gain interest from fans.

Shangri-la Nix? Wait...that doesn't sound right. :(

I don't think it was intended to replace XI entirely, but I am sure they had high hopes for getting a large portion of people from XI over to XIV. Like someone said, nothing wrong with having two MMOs going at the same time, just look at EQ and EQ2 :)
