Just posted on the official forums.
If you look closely, you will realize the poor thing has hip dysplasia,
which limits its speed to about the level of a striding archer.

Yeah, they said it would be like this. I think there are 3 or 4 sizes... small (lala), medium (hyur, elf, miqo), large (hyur, elf, miqo), extra large (roe)

Its part of one of the posts.. I'm too lazy to look.

I hate going to the lodestone forums now... seriously people just complain about everything. We get chocobos and the first 20 comments I read were
"oh wow you just teleport on top of them" "where is the animation for getting on them" "oh you can't walk with your chocobo next to you? wth"

Complaints all day, they act like games like WoW had everything they do now right from the start... "back in my day" we never had auto-instant group formation for dungeons. People expect everything and instantly, be happy you're getting a chocobo at all.

Yeah yeah we all know that "this should have been in the game from the start"... well it's common knowledge the game was released wayyyyyy too early. Get over it. /rant :D

All the shiny graphics, and the chocobo still magically warps under your *** like FFXI... They really should have made a mounting animation.

Sorry but it always did seem like a cheap corner-cut even in ffxi. The fact that they kept it that way in a game where they make you wait to get on your knees and take out a tool to craft, pretty much validates all the people that point out how out of place this looks. It's not knit picking, it's glaringly awkward looking.

Also the animations in FFXIV are more skeleton based and dynamic than FFXI, so adding new animations like that shouldnt be as huge a task as it was in FFXI (where you had to bake new animations into every piece of every armor model in the game).

Actually, it's just the opposite, the animations in FFXIV are done using motion capture, meaning it is significantly more costly and time
consuming[can or cannot be true based on their production process] than the simple skinned models in FFXI. Not to mention that this is the most bare-bones version of the chocobo system imaginable. Given that you will be able to walk your chocobo in the future, I would say there is a good chance they will add a mount animation when time allows.

Some people will always have something to complain about. While it's a little disheartening that they don't have an animation of getting on the chocobo, if I have to go one more update without chocobos/airships...

I'd be happy if they fix this later on, though. They also cut corners on airships for now by making them cutscene-only and having us actually ride them in a later update. Same may go for chocobo animations?

Some people will always find something to complain about, no matter what. Example: "What.. no animations at mounting on the chocobos... this is lame, blah, blah, blah", then SE add animations to please this people and2 weeks later: "OMG.. why the animations take too long while mounting the chocobo... I got killed while the animation was in process... why they added animation to them instead of just popping on them, blah, blah, blah..." Some people need to learn how to enjoy the little things, and use their time on having fun instead of complaining.

This. If the animation for getting on the chocobo were sufficiently short, it would look ridiculously fast and be something you only watched carefully once before saying, "oh, that's neat I guess," and proceeding to ride your new mount.

If FFXIV is anything like other MMOs I've played (yeah, I know, it isn't), then you'll be getting on and off that chocobo 20 times or more every session. The most boring part in gaming is waiting to be mounted up so you can speed off and do what you need to do. If mounting in FFXIV is faster than in, say, WoW, I'd say that's a tip of the hat to FFXIV.

You're trying to sound like you know what youre talking about.
Surprise, I work for big dev companies, and you sir are full of crap on this one.

In that case I will differ to your greater experience. It was my understanding and assumption that given the cost of hiring actors for the motion capture, along with the animators to bind the motion to the model, as well as the extra specialized equipment, the final cost would be higher with motion capture based techniques. Temporally speaking, I could see motion capture being an overall faster process though. It somewhat saddens me that so many people on these forums take an opportunity to educate and merely use it as an excuse to mock those who know less. Although I am glad I have learned something and I will not make the same mistake in the future.

Motion capture vs Key framing is probably not that different in cost, depending if you have the equipment and everything ready.

Motion capture often looks way better, but it does involve a bit of a sceduling nightmare, depending on how much you love scheduling and things. It's also less flexible since you need to have the actors come back for another session if you're not happy with the end result.

On topic: At least we're not mounting in a puff of smoke after rubbing our hands together for 2 seconds.

Ok, I've read your reply trying to find some sense on it, specially cause what he said is true, FFXIV is motion capture (you can see it in those dev videos and the extra dvd from the collectors edition), and trying to find the connection with that and you working for "big dev companies"; but I find myself going back to "Huh?!... what?"

Leave it to people to complain about how you get on the Chocobo. The only part about the Chocobo I care about is how fast it gets me from point A to point B. In fact I don't even care if it looks like a Chocobo, as long as it is a faster than walking.

I agree... plenty of games use the "insta-pop" technique for mounting. Sure its been around for a while, but if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Maybe they want a mounting animation like the active/passive mode worked at release... *running* STOP... pull weapon out... *run slower* -> *running* STOP... watch 3-5 second animation of getting a chocobo.

I'm sure that would be nice until people start complaining that:
"it takes longer to get on the chocobo than to get to where I need to go"
"I died while mounting my chocobo"
"my chocobo ran off as soon as I got on it because I was being attacked"
"the animation doesnt meet my expectation"
"why cant the animation be like this <insert random example> "

Second option is they have it how active/passive mode is now.. I.E. the fancy glide slide we have today:
"This is totally unrealistic, you move while mounting!"
"This ruins my IMMERSION!!!!"
"Why does the chocobo run before I'm on it?"

Just be happy the beta version of chocobos is in the game.

For that matter, why do we have visuals for anything at all, right? Where do we draw the proverbial line if "fast-sliding" is enough for your version of travel? We draw it wherever you say we do, because it's a matter of personal opinion and nothing more. Should spells look different? Should different attacks feature entirely different animations for our characters? These are the problems with opinions on superficial matters: each individual believes themselves to be correct (and everyone more particular than themselves a complainer) for a generally inarticulate and personal matter of aesthetic taste and observation.

We can probably all agree that a chocobo just appearing beneath the player is pretty much the least SE could have done. We disagree when we discuss whether that much effort is enough.

I would have loved to see an Epona style chocobo system, where they come running from off screen, but the reality is that's wishful thinking, hopefully it's something they consider down the road though, when everything else has been ironed out.

It'd be pretty neat in an MMO, whistle and you hear a wark, they spawn somewhere just outside your field of vision and come running. Even wait around for you when you hop off to turn in a quest and then hop back on.

What Ramsey said reminds me of how Horses were implemented in Ultima Online.

I miss that game, sometimes. Then I agree to give it another shot, and I log off within seconds. Time was not kind with that game...

I'm just glad I can finally move around faster :)

Animation to get on/off? Meh, I'd rather see SE use their energy on more pressing matters. Think about your eye-candy craving as Touch up at end of synthesis, it just does not matter if you botched the damned synth.

Overall, **** yea my bird is back :D

That's true, but I don't think there a lot of options between "the least SE could have done" and what they should have done. A poorly designed mounting animation is really just as bad as no mounting animation; extra smoke, hands waving, a lighting bolt? That would grow old fast and would clearly just be disguising a lack of a great mounting animation.

Then you get into the question of, "Where does the chocobo come from?" A pocket? Does he poof out of thin air? Those are going to break immersion. I like the suggestion about whistling and the mount will come to you, but that sounds difficult to implement. How long does it take for the chocobo to come to you? Are we supposed to wait 10 seconds every time we want to mount? That doesn't sound bad at first, but when you're gathering for a while, that grows quite old.

If the mount was following you--which is the most realistic option--then you could make a case that you should be climbing aboard instead of magically finding yourself on top. It sounds like they have plans to implement this, so we'll see what happens. Is the chocobo going to follow you into dungeons? That would get confusing in big groups--they're not little vanity pets, which are already annoying in other MMO dungeons and raids. Realistically, you'd tie them up outside, but somehow I doubt we'll see that.

In the end, I'm honestly surprised they even did this much. The game isn't generating much revenue at all now, and I still have low expectations about its viability in the future. Still, I'm looking forward to trying this out when the patch comes. Might get me playing again.

Chocco's are cool looking ostriches..... I really want to go to one of those countries that have ostrich racing and maybe even learn to ride one..... maybe I could setup a R.L. Ostrich Racing league in N.A. ... yeah that would be sweet. but why stop there maybe I can get a license to ride on instead of driving my car to work I would save on Car insurance... no more winter tires, plus I would look so pimp pullling up on my ostrich at some lights next to a fat aging rich Pr!@k driving a ferrari and when he revs his car showing off I could rev my Ostrich the Lights go Green .... "WAARRK" and then I smoke him at the lights.... yeah that would be sweet.

ohh btw insta pop chocco's in game is fine, although if S.E. is going to intro a mounting system at a later date maybe they could do it like this.

You whistle, you hear the chocco running toward you off screen you start running on foot in the direction you want to go on the choccobo and then the chocco runs on screen and you mount it (not sexually) as both it and you are running... like they do in some of those badass westerns ive seen recently.

Difficult to implement?

You realize I directly referenced Epona, from... well the Ocarina of Time which was for this, I don't know, Nintendo 64 thing? A console from over a decade ago?

The reality is, it wouldn't really be difficult to implement, it certainly would require more than just having it pop below you. Which is why I also said, I'd be fine if they implemented that later, though I feel like the other side of the players (ones who care about convenience most) would just be irritable about no longer being able to have their bird instantly appear.

Anyway, there's a zillion ways to do it, but, ideally, they'd use some method of determining what you can and cannot see, such as a raytrace on the camera, then spawn the chocobo somewhere within 50-100 meters from the player and have them run over. As long as it took about 5 seconds maximum, I don't think it would be a big issue.

Ideally this could be implemented alongside the chocobo walking beside you, thus the whole "chocobo comes from off screen" deal would only have to occur whenever you are calling him or her for the first time in a session. After that, they can follow along, and you can simply mount again after a battle/npc dialog, and continue along without having to whistle, until you dismiss them again.

There are a few reasons it could be useful, but I imagine it's mostly an immersion thing. Assuming that instead of poofing, when you dismount the chocobo follows close behind, or can carry extra items for you, or work as a mobile bank, etc, etc.

What they'll do with it, we'll have to wait and see. Hopefully it won't be worthless.

Yes it was possible but only with Shadowmere, who upon being "killed" would only be unconscious allowing you to access the inventory to store things. You had to "kill" it again to access it again.

There are a few reasons it could be useful, but I imagine it's mostly an immersion thing.

So they have plans to implement walking with your chocobo, but no real plan on how else it might be useful for? I don't think that it qualifies for 'immersion' if it doesn't really have any impact. Then again, I never really got the whole digital pet craze, but to each his own I guess.

You're confusing "we don't know" with "they don't know."

And before anyone says it, I know it's really hip amongst the forum kiddies to make jokes about how that's basically the same thing, but it's not.

What's wrong with taking stroll through Thanalan with my Chocobo by my side? Sounds like just the thing to do when I want a little break from crafting. ^^ I'd be fine with it even if it never went anywhere. :)

Heck, I would have been fine with personal chocobos having all kinds of stats, including a stamina stat, that determined how long you could ride them, or how long you could ride them for how fast. After depleting you'd have to walk along side them or dismiss them for a while. Perhaps providing items and water would raise it back up faster.

Provide real incentives for players to breed amazing chocobos when chocobo breeding became possible, and allowing players to sell chocobos. No reason players couldn't make a living breeding awesome chocobos and maintaining their lineage. Some players want to breed their own, some would rather buy them from others.

Also with stamina, you could choose to ride very swiftly or slower but without eating as much stamina, based on how fast you wanted to get somewhere, and how far it was. My point, if there was one, is that I don't mind all sorts of seemingly useless and frivolous crap added for the sake of the dreaded "Immersion" word. But people are confusing immersion with fun, both totally subjective, and neither mutually exclusive. To me, chocobos having varying stamina, speeds, strengths, etc based on breeding would be awesome. To others, it might be irritating and a nuisance.

Also the animations in FFXIV are more skeleton based and dynamic than FFXI, so adding new animations like that shouldnt be as huge a task as it was in FFXI (where you had to bake new animations into every piece of every armor model in the game).

if i'm not mistaken XI had an animation where the chocobo would kneel/crouch down and you climbed on its back. ofcourse i could have just imagined these things, but i'm pretty sure my imagination was to busy with girls at the time to start adding imaginary animation in a game :S.

Sort of, at the chocobo stable there was a CS where the chocobo would crouch down but it would fade to black and then cut to you being on it. Doing a cutscene like that would get annoying in FFXIV and after a few times or so I'd be tempted to spam the ESC key to skip cutscene. (A lot like the raid cutscnes they have now. Nice, but after a few runs they get in the way.)

Coming from FFXI, I'm surprised "immersion" and "frivolous crap" was the best we could do.

You could hop off your chocobo to perform a gathering action, or raise a dead guy, or kill an NM, or any number of things you might do while traveling from point A to point B without the need to immediately re-summon the bird (and potentially waste a charge on your choco-whistle, or whatever).

In FFXI walking your chocobo was useful though. You could improve your affection while raising, learn stories or even sometimes get lucky and your choco would find something. I'm not bashing, really I'm not. I'd just like to see something more than 'quality time' RP with your chocobo as an option.

When you used a chocobo whistle to call your own bred chocobo it was just like here, you just popped on top of it.

About the "go on walks and fight with your chocobo" I am super psyched!!! I think if they implement walking with your choco beside you they will add a purpose to it, maybe have it work like extra inventory space like people here mentioned, which is definitely cool imo.

The whole fighting with your chocobo seems really cool, but it depends on what they do. Personally I'd like only 1 class to be able to do it: chocobo knight and that they go all out there. However if they decide people can do it in general I'd rather just see it as a competetion sort of thing, like having jousting as a mini-game.

Either way though, I think these would all be great additions to XIV and I hope they do really come through with it all and make something good out of it. Talking is easy :)

I'm glad so many people here understand that MMOs and everything done in them needs to centre around one thing: getting to the cap as quickly and as pragmatically as possible. Animations; immersion; aesthetic effort; these are all pointless - and gods forbid any role-playing occurs throughout the course of this role-playing game. I'm just glad we all get it: it's about reaching the end and reaching it fast. Because, really, at the end of the day, what we all want is simply the ability to quit. Thankfully, once you've sped through everything in a pragmatic world totally devoid of immersion, there's no reason to stick around.

oh, i see. so it only happened for rented choco's. well im not a fan of popping on, in, or around anything i'm also not a fan of the Magical floating shields and weapons either, as there not game breaking issue. i can wait for the final touches such as race diversity(in regards too stances, animations and gear templates.) and Battle Animations such as new/added animations to each skill. examples of classes that horribly reuse skill animation templates are

MRD Upward Swing template, used way to much even on skills that state the direction of the swing being different.

GLA 360 slash template, is very dominate on many animations that state otherwise just like MRD.

LNC over under pierce template, very dominate but not nearly as bad as the other two classes.

The animation your character uses depends on the weaponskill -- if it's slashing, blunt or piercing.

Lancer has a bunch of everything, so "varies" more than others. It is mainly piercing, which is the pierce template as you call it. (moonrise is slashing, leg sweep is blunt, etc.)

Gladiator is pretty much only slashing, which is the 360 slash template as you call it

And Marauder has mostly slashing (the upward swing) but a few blunt (fracture, brutal swing) which is the overhead attack.

If you want more variety in animations, you could always cross-class some skills of the type you like most.

Yeah, it's technically a solution but, ideally, SE could have just made better animations. It's kind of like suggesting that, if you want a challenge, you wear sub-par gear, though. XD

The more specific the animation, then the skill will be locked to that weapon type, and no longer be able to be equipped cross class, unfortunately.
