Patch 1.19 will see the implementation of two long-awaited series mainstays: chocobos and airships!
Chocobos
We are pleased to announce that chocobos, those trusty flightless birds, will finally be coming to Eorzea! While upon chocoback, adventurers will be able to freely traverse the land with far greater celerity than is possible with their own two feet.

Personal Mounts

The chocobo whistle item will be introduced, allowing adventurers to call forth their personal mounts while out in the field. These chocobos will boast a speed advantage over their rental counterparts, and all adventurers are wholeheartedly encouraged to aspire to a bird that they can call their own.

Acquiring Your Steed
In order to acquire a personal chocobo, adventurers must:

1) Officially enlist in a Grand Company (achieve a rank higher than recruit).
2) Acquire a chocobo issuance for 3,000 company seals (price subject to change)

3) Speak with the stablemaster NPC representing your Grand Company at one of the locations below to be issued a chocobo and a summoning whistle.

- Isleen: Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks (7, 5)
- Fruhdhem: Gridania (6, 5)
- Rururaji: Ul'dah Merchant Strip (6, 3)

At the time you acquire your chocobo, you will be given the opportunity to name your new adventuring companion.
* All company chocobos are male.

Calling Your Steed
Your chocobo can be called by using the chocobo whistle via the micro menu.

However, you cannot call your chocobo when:
- Inside a city-state or dungeon.
- Incurring enmity from an enemy.
* No recast time is imposed upon the chocobo whistle.

Future patches will usher in customizable barding along with a system for developing your chocobo. A host of other content is also in the works, including those designed to nurture the bond between man and bird, and adventurers can look forward to a fulfilling and lasting companionship with their chocobos.

Rental Chocobos
Those who haven't quite gotten around to acquiring a personal mount, fear not! By paying a fee in gil, you can still avail yourself of rental chocobos for a predetermined duration. Upon confirming payment, you will be taken to an area immediately outside the bounds of the city-state to commence your journey. As mentioned earlier, rental chocobos will not be as swift as personal mounts; however, they will still be a considerable improvement over your own two feet.

Renting a Chocobo
To rent a chocobo, simply speak to one of the NPCs listed below and pay the fee in gil.

- Isleen: Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks (7, 5)
- Fruhdhem: Gridania (6, 5)
- Rururaji: Ul'dah Merchant Strip (6, 3)

Requirement: Attaining level 10 in any one class.
Fee: 800 gil (subject to change)
Rental duration: 10 minutes (Earth time) (subject to change)
* At the end of ten minutes, you will automatically dismount the chocobo, and the bird will then make its own way back to the stable.
* Both rental fee and duration may change as a result of fine-tuning.

Airships
Airships will be introduced as a new mode of transport between the three city-states. To ride an airship, simply make your way to the airship landing in each nation and pay for your passage in gil. Departure and arrival cutscenes will accompany each flight; the voyage itself, however, will be over in a matter of seconds. In the future, we will make it possible for adventurers to fully savor the experience of flying, taking in the sights and sounds while roaming the decks of their vessels.

Airship Landing Locations
- Limsa Lominsa
Via the Crow's Lift on both upper and lower deck (7, 5). Select airship landing when prompted.

- Gridania
Below the Adventurers' Guild (6, 6).

- Ul’dah
Via the Wellhead Lift on either the Merchant or Hustings Strip (6, 4). Select airship landing when prompted.

Hmmm... custom barding. The context tells me that it probably means armor for the chocobo, better check the definition to be sure. Nope, bacon. We will get to cover our chocobos in bacon. Source

Cool! But at the same time, I'm slightly disappointed that there aren't quests or anything at all really involved to use advanced travel :/ Part of being a noobie in FFXI was the thrill at getting to Jeuno and FINALLY getting a chocobo, and then later getting rank 5 and an airship pass. I miss the old-school style.

So basically it is a transportation (for a fee) between cities.

I was recently pondering on this point - well, this general point. FFXIV goes about its world building significantly different than FFXI does. FFXIV seems to be closer to a sandbox methodology as opposed to FFXI's relatively strict hierarchical methodology. While some would argue that there isn't much, or even enough, content to make FFXIV a sandbox, the way that you access the content that does exist is very sandbox-like. You can approach any content, any time, with little restriction. Meanwhile, FFXI followed a much stricter hierarchy. If you wanted to get Chocobos: get to Jeuno, get level 20, and do a (relative to the level) difficult and time consuming quest. If you want to get Sea, do almost the entire CoP storyline.

Personally, I did very much enjoy the sense of achievement for gaining access to higher tier content, but I believe that as long as the Dev team introduce challenging content that requires a few hoops to jump through to complete - think Einherjar - in the future, it won't be a huge impediment for me to enjoy the game in a more sandbox environment.

Bah!I thought SE would notice the 6 and 4 anima cost is the only reason people run most of the time to far places and would somehow lower it for missions. In FF11 other races enjoyed standing their chocobo on my taru to block him out, chocobo to chocobo missle launchers would be great. This mode of travel almost makes me want to join a company .....almost.

Choco-bacon Ranch Footlong Sub. I don't think eating chocobo is safe. They are only in cutscenes in game but feathers are everywhere.I thinking bird flu hit Eorzea.

At first I thought that the price of the whistle was 3000 gil, which seemed like a strange decision to make for all sorts of reasons. Once I read it more closely, however, my thoughts were more similar to yours: "Oh, SE, you're being crafty now!"

If they implement things correctly (that is, with quality quests and all), companies can start to form that much-needed cornerstone of gradual progression that XIV lacks.

They never said they would be! But that doesn't mean eventually they won't be! Between airships (insta travel) and choco-bacons, Anima supply is going to go way up. I'll be porting to nodes a lot more than I do now :D

Happy to hear that airship travel will be almost instant. A good first step to equalizing the populations in the 3 cities a bit. I think Ul'dah will still remain the main unofficial hub due to it's easy layout compared to the other 2 cities, at least until changes to the layouts are made or something like intra-city teleporters are implemented.

Airship travel will be instant? That's kind of a bummer, I always liked how you could watch the airships travelling in XI.

I think alot of people agree with your sentiment Wint. The best way to satisfy everyone is to allow players to run about the airship, but have the ability to skip ahead to the landing at any time.

I'm not sure how this will be done as far as the timing of the animations for airships docking.

Personally, I would be just fine if it didn't actually make physical sense (immersion wise) and players have the choice to just arrive at different times.

Yeah thats a boommer. You should be able to run about on the ship and interact with other people, being able to see the world from above and other players like small bugs on the ground.

Maybe they are keeping this away from people to hide the fact, that from above it will be clear that the entire Eorzea is one big copy-pasta?

Chocobo’s won’t have surnames and you will be able to input the name yourselves and not have to choose from a list of names.

With that said, my chocobo will be named Zapdos and we will be the very best, like no one ever was.

I think the requirements are perfectly fine, for a new player hitting 25, it's going to take a while to get 3000 seals anyways. The issue is they're adding low level content in at a time when the game's population is either not playing or mostly high level, so it seems too easy to obtain, but they're rather ideal requirements.

Hopefully later we can invest time and money to raise them to be stronger, faster, etc.

I agree. Level 25 is sufficient. Gives them new players something to work for that isn't too too hard to get.

I think the point that was under debate in that topic was if it was possible for crafters and gatherers to get access to chocobos if they dont have battleclasses. So DoH/L-centric players will have to rank a DoW/M in order to get a chocobo.

Well here's to hoping that Grand Company Leves include leves for DoH/DoL, otherwise I may pry my eyes out of my head with a melon baller in the near future.

Some final information about naming

http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/24328-What-Will-You-Name-Your-Chocobo?p=359133&viewfull=1#post359133

Quote:

FYI - chocobo names will be limited to 10 characters, no spaces/special characters, chocobo names aren't unique to the server (multiple people can name their chocobo Bayohne!) and capitalization rules will follow PC character names (first letter capitalized, no inter-caps like BaYohNE).

I think that covers everything, so I hope you all hammer out your chocobo names by 1.19!
And I really have no idea what I'm gonna name 'im! Energydrink is 11 characters!

Only 10 chars and no symbols/caps. So no xXxSephirothxXx or Kentucky Fried Chocobo. But it is a pity we won't see "[Player Name] mounts ChuckNorris"

It's too bad about the spaces, I can't bring my FFXI chocobo back to life. Smiley: frown

I don't have 3000 seals left, and no way to get more that I know of (all Company quests completed).

I suppose they will be releasing additional Company Quests to make up for this.

Considering the Companies haven't been added past the "recruit" stage, I would imagine there will be plenty to do when the Companies are fully added in 1.19.

Also, have you gotten the 3000 seals ( 1000 per company ) from the event?

This is the only thing to cross my mind for the upcoming update.

Nope. I don't understand this latest event. I know that fireworks are available, nothing beyond that. None of the NPC at the event stand tell you were to go or offer a quest. Could you tell me where to start the event?

I would guess that the chocobo will require you to have 3000 seals at a single Company.

The NPCs at the stalls are just for flavor apparently. Just talk to the guy at the counter of each company that gives out quests and choose small talk, and viola 1000 free seals. That's it, not much to it unfortunately.
