Letter from the Producer, XIX (09/27/2011)

Hello everyone! Yoshi-P here.

Sorry to pester you all with another short post, but I had some info to share concerning the release schedule for patch 1.19. I wanted to make sure that it got out to all regions, so figured a letter was the way to go.

It’s now looking like we’ll be able to get the patch out the evening of October 4, some five days later than we originally intended.

The main reason for the delay is the balancing and debugging needed to ensure the stability of both all-new content and the overhauls being made to battle algorithms. Rather than rushing an earlier release and risking unnecessary player inconvenience, I’d rather spend a few more days balancing the combat and materia systems, and squashing as many bugs as possible.

Also, the following features have been pushed back to patch 1.19a:

¤ Ixal stronghold (Natalan)
¤ Guildleve history evaluations

After some testing, Natalan and the evaluations still have some balance issues and other bugs, so we’ve decided it best to reschedule them for a 1.19a release.

The patch notes for 1.19 will be released on September 30. The dev, ops, and loc teams are working to get them out as soon as possible, so please hang on for just a few more days.

But despite the five-day delay, the time for Eorzea’s adventurers to take up arms against Ifrit, that mainstay of the FINAL FANTASY series, is near at hand! And while it certainly doesn’t make up for the delay, I thought I’d drop a li’l teaser vid from the upcoming Bowl of Embers.

Link to Ifrit Preview Battle

I promise my next letter will be longer! I think I’ll have some details to share with you on our one-year anniversary event, too. See you next time and/or on the forums!

A 5 day delay on the patch implementation, but we will get the patch notes on time to peruse.

Edit: Imperial Legatus is a firin his lazar! Rahhhhhh

I was anticipating at least a week longer than the Sept. 30 date, so 5 days isn't bad at all. And all the good stuff like chocos, airships, more inventory, materia, etc. seems to be coming on time.

I was looking forward to the guildleve "ticketing" system - is the "Guildleve history evaluations" refering to this being pushed back to 1.19a ?

I won't say I'm surprised... but that video of the Ifrit battle looked good.

Sleepless nights are here again until 1.19

Oct. 4 is my birthday, so a nice surprise gift in a week. ^^ Anyway, I think it's for the best interest of us players to make sure when all the new changes come that they are done correct without a lot of bugs. A five day push back to me is fine considering it could have been a week or more.

It's good SE will give patch notes early this time so we can all peruse and whet our appetites before the actual changes and content are in. Patch 1.19 looks to be a good one. :)

The ticketing system is what some of us have been discussing on official forums. Note that he said evaluation history, not the entire system, which leads me to believe we might get shafted out of the bonuses until 1.19a. If it's a measly bonus for completing sequential leves, then it's not a big deal. If we're talking 2-3k SP or such, that's a substantial difference when you add up 30 or 40 leves.

To be fair, they never stated exactly what the bonuses would be...could be gil, marks or SP.../shrug.

Did anyone else note that in the Ifrit fight do to the mp and healing gimp every time he dropped the HP of nearly all members to zero in less time than needed to cure? Or was that just me?

As a tank, I was afraid my HP was going to go down, seems like it's quite the opposite. Far and away, the most interesting part of the video.

Well, other than that Gaius Baltar was involved with Ifrit, which was more disappointing than anything, seeing as that little gem of a lore item was my hope that we'd secretly be getting some new Garlean/invasion style content.

Interesting. Wonder if the difference is due to attribute placement, or if we might see actual racial characteristics.

It is very hard to tell what exactly they are wearing in the video, but I am assuming it has to do with gear/materia. Iirc SE stated that the only difference between races will be base stats (those listed at character creation screen).

Gear and materia most likely contribute, but I doubt those alone are contributing upwards of 1200 hp, most likely stats will be more balanced and less extremely tipped in one direction, (all points into vitality anyone?) which is why I figured my HP might drop a bit, but it seems that there's definitely going to be a boost to HP before gear and materia, or else even mage gear is going to have HP+ on it now.

I hate it more when you wait and wait and wait and then it's crap.

I'll bet there was a discussion about pushing patch 1.19 out the door prior to the one year anniversary, specifically to keep from hearing how the 1-year-review-is-lacking nonsense.

Clearly, someone at SE has learned not to release content before it is ready.

Miracle.Patch delayed, parts of Miracle.Patch pushed off until Miracle.Patch.a is released at a non-descript future date.....great work Yoshi, way to deliver and follow-through on your promises!

And thanks for the additional notes / videos / screen shots of exciting stuff you are allegedly working on, I look forward to that purported content being further delayed.

This is my surprised face.

He definitely splits, but I don't see anything in the log marking a name of an ability, most likely because if he does in fact charge it, it wasn't in the video, since it cuts to right as the three copies appear.

Vulcan Buster
Large AoE Fire Damage @0:40
About 800 damage

Crimson Cyclone
Teleport followed by a linear dash attack @1:00
2283 damage to Roegadyn Con

Eruption
Delayed fire AoE marked by a red circle on the ground
Didn't see it hit anyone

Hellfire
Signature move! Massive AoE + Massive Fire Damage
900-1800 damage, hit the entire arena, used at about 33% health

His normal attacks seemed to do around 800-1000 damage a hit to the Hyur GLA, his attack also seemed to at least sometimes be a conal swipe, hitting anyone in front of him.

The last move was indeed his signature move "Hellfire" used at around 33%, it did roughly 900-1800 damage to everyone in the arena (joy.) Added it to my original post about his abilities. The only thing I can't figure out from the video is about 1:15 in, he does something where he does a small roar, and suddenly he becomes emissive (gives off light... he gets brighter basically) this is right before he goes on a rampage cleaving everyone.

That said, it doesn't seem to be a hard hate reset, nor does it seem to be linked to his attack cleaving, because he did that before at least once. There also doesn't appear to be any status icon when he uses it, and on top of that, it's not charged and nothing shows up in the chat log to reflect that he's used it. It may just be a marker that you've reached about 50%, and he now hits harder or uses more moves or something.

One thing I will say is he looks a **** of a lot better when he's brighter like that, he looks like any old demon before that, in the dark lighting.

Edit: Are they still doing a low level version of this fight or did I imagine that entire idea, where they had a higher and lower level version?

Also.... Not to take away from the awesomeness of the fight, but... WHAT THE **** @ Gaius Baltar's personal entourage.

Still these ******* asshats in stupid purple outfits? Honestly!? I was okay with them, because I kept telling myself, it's just because they're the low level soldiers of the Ala Mighan occupation forces, draftees... But when the Legatus' personal escorts are also wearing this crap I'm starting to get very irritated. If they introduce the Empire in earnest and every soldier is not faceless, wearing armor with a mask, I will flip a biscuit. I don't care if it's cliched, but an Empire like this needs faceless armor-clad soldiers to be their rank and file. It captures a totally different feel.

You can humanize an individual soldier by simply raising their helmet, but all these purple wearing d-bags are awful. Their outfits are not imposing or aesthetically interesting in the least.

So someone asked me what the Legatus was saying, and I took some time to attempt a translation, and I have to say in this case my Japanese is definitely too weak to be worthwhile. That said, it doesn't seem terribly important, it seems like he is either reciting an incantation, or it's a dramatic observation of the appearance of Ifrit or something to that effect.

Here's my attempt anyways...

Quote:
六の陽 没し 七の月 輝きしとき
群雲より 紅き炎降り 奈落より 黒き闇湧かん

ろくのひ ぼっし ななのがつ かがやきしとき
むらくもより あかきほのおふり くろきやまいわかん

With the setting of the sixth sun,
the seventh moon now gleams.
From gathering clouds the red flames descend,
the hellish black darkness seethes.

If I had to take a wild guess, it's a metaphor for the coming of the seventh umbral era? But even if that's the case, it doesn't explain the sixth sun, since isn't this the seventh astral era? Sixth sun seems to have some possible connection to the region though, as the fists of the sixth sun drop in Thanalan.
