Ok,so im speaking for the gamer that loves the Final Fantasy Series and wanted to get into FFXIV when it came out but for one reason or another didn't.

When the game launched all we heard was how sh*tty it was, but i get that when Everquest 2 came out everyone HATED it so much they decided to stick with everquest. Final Fantasy 11 was the same way. Hordes of people jumped ship and ran back to FF11 after the bad reviews.

Now its been a little over a year since this game came out, I heard they were doing lots of work to it even letting you play for free until they fix everything.

Now considering you get free play time and hopefully the game is getting better i would like some honest opinions.

Where is the game at?
Where will it be in a year from now?
If i join now is it worth my hard earned cash?(is it free right now?)
What other problems are going on in the game?

No one is in a rush to answer this. I would guess because this exact same question pops up every other day.

The short answer is no. Wait until after patch 1.19 (October 4th).

Then, you can not only see all of the improvements that have been made thus far, but you can also experience all the new content and changes to core game mechanics that come along with patch 1.19 (including airships and chocobos). Read the patch notes that will be posted here this Friday, September 30th.

To expand a bit, the game has improved significantly, UI has improved, Fatigue has been removed, repair is managable now and Targeting is functional at least. Many players are actually having fun. But there is still quite a way to go before an honest and objective FFXIV player will tell you that it is ready to compete with the modern MMO market.

Actually I would go ahead and make sure the game is up-to-date before 1.19 and THEN wait until after 1.19 to actually start playing. :)

No I think Tanaka is still lurking around here somewhere... if you log in he may jump through your window and mug you.

I bought a can of Tanaka-Be-Gone and keep it next to my monitor, just in case.

Too bad the FFXI players didn't stock up on that stuff. Sucks for them, he's all theirs now.

I've been excited for FFXIV ever since I first heard word it was coming out. My expectations built and built until it was reviewed poorly, and I was scared away, despite my love for the series. (I am not made of money, and could not in good conscience make the 'down payment' of buying the game without some assurance.)

It has been near a year now and SE's dedication to picking FFXIV off its feet impresses me, when I firmly believed eventually, they would let it go. I've recently ordered the game and should receive it a couple of days after 1.19, because my urge to try it persists.

I don't know if this 'helps' you, but here is one new player willing to give it a shot.

Just my 2 cents but I think once patch 1.19 goes live, yes, you should definitely give it a try again. It's a whole different game than it was a year ago. And it will be even stronger a year from now. I firmly believe that. But you can call it a complete game, especially after this next patch, and it's still free to play for now so give it a shot!

Wouldn't hurt to try. The game is dirt cheap to buy, free to play. It's still rough, but you might enjoy it.

The best answer to this question is that you need to try it for yourself to really see if it's for you. Like others have said, wait until after the 4th, and you'll be met with a slew of changes for the better. The only way to really see if it's improved is to play and see for yourself.

For the first time since the beta crashed and burned, its actually looking like the game could be salvaged. Patch 1.19 is massive in scope. If everything goes well, FFXIV could become pretty playable over the next few patches.

There are a number of things that still need reworking or fixing, but its slowly shaping up. I wouldn't be surprised if they managed to "re-release" FFXIV and attempt to go to a pay-to-play format within the next 6 months.
