I'm thinking about building myself a new PC, somewhat for Skyrim but also for better FFXIV performance.

Current system is:
AMD 1055T, GTX460 1GB, 8GB DDR3 1600, 120GB Vertex2 SSD, 28" HannsG 1920x1200

It runs the game pretty much fine but I would like to use higher settings, more AA.

Here's my issue. I actually have TWO GTX 460 1GB cards which I could SLI but then I would have to run in full screen. :( I have other computers and laptops I could use to lookup info but I'm such a casual player that I really need need to run in Windowed mode. I hate having other computers cluttering my desk to lookup info, its never easy/comfortable to be handling two keyboards.

It pains me to spend $300 on a new GPU when I have some that will run equal to a GTX580.

I'm looking to build:
2600k, same memory, Gigabyte GTX 570 @ 800mhz, same SSD, Gigabyte Z68 mb, Corsair H80 liquid cooler, maybe overclock to 4Ghz or so. I have a nice 750w PS.

So what are people doing for SLI? Do you run in full screen and suck it up? I'm thinking that the GTX 570 would offer quite a bit of improvement straight over a single GTX 460 and I'm not sure but perhaps my 1055T is bottlenecking? Its stock.

I guess I'm also sort of stuck because when I play Skyrim, it will be annoying to know I could be running 460s in SLI and be having better performance than one 570. But I'm not going to switch out GPUs for each game I play :D

Thanks for any comments!

I just rebuilt my machine and put one of these in it:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130661

It was an upgrade from GTX260's in SLI, and runs the game quite well. I'm tempted to get a second one since they're cheap and see if I can max things out but right now, with just the single card, the game looks fantastic. I also run the 2600k, these are the parts I bought:

Right now the only bottleneck on my system for the Windows Experience Index is the hard drive, I have raptors in a striped array and they're the slowest piece by far.

Hmm? Why you should not able to run windowed with a SLI? I have, like you maybe going to have, 2 460's and i'm running in SLI with load on both cards.

I'm curious about this as well, I just ordered my second 460 off Newegg this morning. Quite frankly, one 460 has been tremendous - the performance for the price has just been beyond anything I could have asked for and I'm only upgrading because the market on them is dwindling down and I want to grab another one before I lose the chance. Two SLI'd 460s are always near the top of most benchmarking articles I read nowadays, right underneath the $500+ card options.

You can run windowed mode with SLI without performance impact.

Running SLI with a secondary monitor in one of your GPUs will adversely impact your XIV gfx performance (not a ton, but I lose about 5fps on average by running my secondary @ 1024x768).

Interesting.... Do you have to do any special settings like force it in the control panel? I will have to try it tonight. That would save a me a ton of $$$.

Thanks Wint, I really like that MB, maybe I will spring the extra $50 if I don't have to get a new GPU.

EDIT:

Also its odd there are several places that state SLI will not function in Windowed. Here is one:

I guess I shouldn't believe everything I read :/

No crazy settings. Above is a screen of my NVidia control panel. Note SLI enabled and two monitors plugged into same GPU.

Also, here is my SLI settings for the application:
Profile "Final Fantasy XIV"
    ShowOn GeForce
    ProfileType Application
    Executable "ffxivwinbenchmark.exe"
    Executable "ffxivgame.exe"
    Executable "ffxivwin.exe"
    Setting ID_0x0019bb68 = 0x00000001 UserSpecified=true
    Setting ID_0x002ecaf2 = 0x00000000 UserSpecified=true
    Setting ID_0x0084cd70 = 0x00000000 UserSpecified=true
    Setting ID_0x0095def9 = 0x00010000
    Setting ID_0x00a879cf = 0x47814940 UserSpecified=true
    Setting ID_0x00ce2691 = 0xfffffff6 UserSpecified=true
    Setting ID_0x00e5c6c0 = 0x00000000 UserSpecified=true
    Setting ID_0x00e73211 = 0x00000000 UserSpecified=true
    Setting ID_0x1033cec1 = 0x00000003
    Setting ID_0x1033ced1 = 0x00000003 UserSpecified=true
    Setting ID_0x1033dcd1 = 0x00000002 UserSpecified=true
    Setting ID_0x1033dcd2 = 0x00000004
    Setting ID_0x1095def8 = 0x02c00005
    Setting ID_0x10ecdb82 = 0x00000001
    Setting ID_0x200aebfc = 0x00000000 UserSpecified=true
    Setting ID_0x20c1221e = 0x00000001 UserSpecified=true
    Setting ID_0x20fdd1f9 = 0x00000001 UserSpecified=true
EndProfile

I am definitely playing windowed mode. =]

Hope that helps.

EDIT: SLI "works" in windowed mode, but of course you pay a performance penalty. Optimal SLI performance is gained with a single monitor in fullscreen mode. That said, you do have frame rendering on alternating GPUs with SLI/XFire even when running windowed mode.

This will be a huge help, thanks. I will try it tonight and post how it goes. Here's hoping for nicely rounded edges! :D

I swear by EVGA, I've only bought their motherboards and GPUs for years now and their performance has always been fantastic.

I'll second this. Many products I've had from EVGA and never any issues. Great forums too if you ever have any questions.

As to the question of SLI, it's been mentioned in these forums several times before but XIV doesn't run well in SLI.

You pretty much have two options:

1) Disable SLI and run the game on one GPU. Not amazing, but you'll see better performance as well as more stress on your single GPU.

2) Use the second GPU solely for the purpose of enhancing AA. To do this you will open up the nVidia control panel, find the option labeled 'Antialiasing - Mode' and select 'Enhance the Application Setting' or 'Override the Application Setting' depending on which you prefer. This will enable the previously greyed out option called 'Antialiasing - Setting'.

Note: Enabling this setting will allow you to go up to ridiculous settings for AA. Work your way up until you find the best balance of quality and performance.
