is this game cpu or gpu demanding?

which graphics card do you need for max settings (excapt hbao) with >60FPS on 1680x1050

would be a phenom II x4 @ 3.6ghz sufficient ?

It's probably a good balance of both to be honest. XIV is way more CPU dependent than other similar games, but you will need a strong GPU to run at moderate settings. That processor is fine for running XIV. I'd suggest a GTX 460 or better(if you prefer nVidia) or an HD 5770 or better(if you prefer ATI/AMD) to run well at mid range settings.

As far as running at max eye candy... well, lets just say that aliens have not yet created the technology required for that. I honestly don't think it's currently possible to max everything and remain above 60 FPS. If it is, I'd like to know what is needed and how many banks I would need to rob to get it.

Oh oh, I know the answer, 3 of these in SLI with one of these.

Yeah, go ahead and try gaming on a Quadro. I don't think you'll be very happy with your investment! :P

I know, although I suppose the sarcasm falls flat on the internet.

Same to you, lol.

Hard to say exactly what the limiting factor in the game is, because the problem is more complex than just a lack of properly upgraded PC parts. FFXI still has the same problem, and that game is from 2002. Even on brand new, high end PCs, the game still struggles to run at the 30 fps cap in particular scenarios (around groups of people). FFXIV looks like it's going down the same road, where no matter what, the game will struggle in certain areas, even after a decade of new technology comes out.

Somewhat unrelated, but this is a more detailed description of why truly accurate emulation of old hardware architectures requires immense computing power. Needing 3Ghz to emulate hardware with a processor that runs at 25Mhz is a factor of 120x the clock speed to accurately reproduce an SNES game. You can get close with much less power and lots of custom tweaks, but that's just "close".

There are different particular reasons for why FFXI still runs poorly on new PCs, and I won't claim to know exactly why FFXIV struggles given the level of graphical detail and relative performance in other games, but the broader concept is still noteworthy. The only people who really know the answers are the software engineers at SE that have had a hand in developing Crystal Tools and FFXIV. Don't expect that to ever get fixed either. FFXI has crashed from losing fullscreen since day 1 of the PC release in 2003, and despite all of that frustration and input from the players requesting a fix, they made the exact same mistake in FFXIV and don't appear to ever be fixing that, either.

tl;dr: It's both, but spending more money won't completely fix it. Sorry. Get the best you can for your budget and deal with the performance problems like everyone else. Don't build a machine just for FFXIV if you don't already love the game. It's a waste of money. Seriously.

:\

Well, have fun waiting on that one. :P Might as well just wait for the game to come out first on PS4.

I picked up 12gb ram/i7960/amd 6870 and for the most part I have ~50-60fps. If I'm in town and they had the snow effects and such and lots of people, i would dip to 35-45 but I'm very happy.

Ambient occlusion is off (as is depth of field), imho neither do anything great for the game.
Everything else is near max however except regular graphic detail which is standard, background is highest.

CPU usage: 18% (52degrees)
GPU usage: 99% (70degrees)

I've run 3 instances without issues @ 20fps... but I have to say they requirements for a good looking screen... are higher than normal ^^;

That said my friend has the same cpu as you and he has a GTX470 and it work's well. 460 should be fine as well and i think you can get those for around ~$80

Like Final Fantasy XI, the game specs will be extremely high for the time, but in about 5 years, an average machine can run it on max settings with little to no issues. Tanaka also expressed interest in making a benchmark program available.

As you probably already know, PS3 is supposed to be the make or break point for this game. If you were to wait for that release you'd probably get the game in much better shape than it is now, it's likely (at least in my opinion) to come with an expansion with more content to keep you busy and it'll probably provide a better experience overall.

To be honest, I am having more fun. I'm playing games I enjoy :P
