Hey, I was just wondering if anyone has any news on this. I've read up on a few of the most recent producers letters and haven't heard anything. Just wondering if this is something that will be planned, because logging into my character on Wutai is a bit depressing when i'm one of the only people running around limsa lomsia (besides the afk) at about 10:00PM PST.
I was just wondering if anyone knew of a possible server merge or the possibility to transfer servers in the near future. I know the game is F2P right now and I can just make another character on a more populated server, however I don't really feel like losing my character and all the gil i've made :/

That's where the information would be if there were any plans to do so.

A server merger would be a bad thing to do, anyway. The second SE merges servers, headlines will read, across every gaming site, "Struggling MMO Final Fantasy XIV begins merging servers!" As even more negative publicity and associations are flashed at any potential players.

Since SE is keeping this game in beta-2 indefinitely, and since they're not making any money from it whatsoever, there's no reason to start doing away with servers. It's not like they have customers to keep, after all - in fact, it would have probably been better if they had shut the game down for a year or two in the first place, allowing themselves to work at an accelerated pace and with less financial loss accrued from running the servers, making patch details, &c.

If/When server do merge this would be no earlier than 4 to 6 months after PS3 release I would think.

Where is the point of doing server merger when you hope for a fresh intake of players in the future?

A large part of why people are leaving, those who are willing to stick it out through the improvements anyway, those people are leaving because servers are dead. Merges would be bad from a press standpoint, but I can't help but think that it would benefit the players to have more people to party wi... oh wait, people don't party... nevermind.

Cross server partys are a bad thing in my oppinnion, it may make it easier to get a party but a games comunity takes a massive hit from it.

Wow is a great example of this, it's completely possable to reach max level by partying through tons of dungeon runs and not actualy have to see any of those players again for the rest of your time playing. When you don't have any reason to care about the people you're playing with alot of people won't even try.

That said, Server Merger pretty much equals the end of a game. I hope they never have to resort to that.

Cross-server partying on multi-region servers. Hmmm.

I believe Elmer will now have to change his JPbutton to a JPonry button. Not going to work well with people who are unwilling(racists) or unable(language barrier) to group with people outside their region unless they do indeed implement a segregation option. This could get interesting...

lol. SE better find a way to segregate people before players wind up either less racist or more competent in the use of auto-translate!

#10FilthMcNasty, Posted: Oct 14 2011 at 5:26 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I know for a fact that there a JP players who refuse to play with NA players. Given our history I can't say that I really blame them, but aside from that; If in fact FFXIV becomes a game that requires quick thinking and communication between players, auto-translate will fail. In my honest opinion A-T is a trade tool at best.

I've yet to encounter any tactics in an MMO that can't be explained in a few auto-translate blocks. Though that may be an insult to the genre more than anything, really.

A typical MMO strategy would basically be: [Monster] 70% [Hit Points]: [Left][Side][Attack!]... [Monster] 50% [Hit Points]: [Run away!][Mages][Area of Effect][Heal!]

And so on and so on. Even action-MMOs can't hope for much more than a few discernible patterns; thus, I'm not sure auto-translate usage is much of a problem. (Oh, and I've leveled through nothing but instances in WoW and almost never has anyone been required to even type so much as a single word, let alone make use of entire translatable phrases and instructions.)

Cheers to your first point and that's kinda what I'm getting at. I'd rather have encounters require thinking on my feet than being allowed the time to type out "Mon tab tab tab enter space 70% hit tab enter colon space lef tab enter att tab tab enter enter" on the fly. Chances are by the time you formulate an A-T message about something your face is already chewed off or you've been standing in fire.

Once encounters become well known people would have to rely less on it, but that still doesn't resolve the issue of JP not wanting to participate with NA. We'll see more about this for sure when the time comes, but looking ahead it just doesn't seem like a good idea.
