It read to me that they will be ending the current story/quest-lines and starting over with an all new storyline. It also sounded like players that aren't continuing to play currently will not be able to visit the current storyline. Kinda sounds like its going to be a completely new game.

Out, the game is not worth a monthly fee in its current state. I'll revisit in a year if all the other amazing games coming out fall flat... doubtful though.

I've already played the game for the past year. I am in. As to those who are saying this will remove half of the player base, I don't think anyone cares. What is half of $0.00? If the game has 50K players and 25K leave leaving 25K paying, that is $325,000/mo. that SE isn't getting now to help them prepare for 2.0. SE doesn't need an active player base in order to relaunch 2.0 and PS3.

Then, given the fact that the coming 7th Umbral Era "Cataclysm" will be one-time events over the year for current players only to experience, I think that will be a nice treat for those who decide to pay and experience it.

I liked being able to check in with the game and see how it's progressing and now it wouldn't be worth $15 a month for a day or two of playtime for each new patch.

If all you got out of the patches is 1-2days of playtime then realistically you will not be missed. Roughly 40% of the currant people with characters in XIV only pop up like you for 2 days after an update.. And i see NO reason why SE should much care to cater to them. Way i see it this P2P move is a simple means to clear the closet of clutter. People that are in in it till the final bell will stay, the people who had no busyness in XIV in the first place will be out.

You do realize that if everyone leaves, there won't BE anyone left to play with, right?

What, exactly, is "true"?

EverQuest 2 had player housing.
FFXI had player housing.

Are they not considered "true" because you can't see a tangible house or place of residence propped up somewhere in the world itself instead of being instanced?

Either way, at least a few MMOs have player housing, and I think most people who came from FFXI would say it was one of the nicer things that helped it to stand out, even if it did take them some years to finally let people visit one another's abodes.

Sorry, yeah - what I meant (and you probably would understand if you knew UO) was an open-world house style that you designed.

I wasn't thinking very broad this morning - wasn't even thinking of something like Mog Houses being classified as player housing.

UO housing you could design and map your own home on a plot of land - but I realize that's not really the only type of what someone would call 'player housing'.

Realistically I've been a fan for over 20 years, stuck around for a year and a half for this game; giving suggestions on how to make this game better (;many of which have been implemented) paid for the collector's edition and still would like to stick around. Paying for a half baked idea just isn't my thing.

Well from the poll so far looks like the servers will be just about half as empty as they are now.

Not too encouraging. But what else would you expect. Just wondering what SE will do about it.....

I'm sorry but SE better cater to people cause it's the people that keep this company alive. The people that are in would of payed for the trash when XIV was first released. **** they would of payed 15 a month for a 3-bit version of this game..

It's fine if people like to throw away money for a half assed game that they admit is only around 50% complete. Isnt this the case a year ago only about 10% better. You also have to factor in all the other countries that are going to have to pay in 2months.. SE is about to shot themselves again.

Leave it free until at least 1.21 or free until the ps3 release. **** I would be fine with them wiping all the characters then offer a week or 2 headstart with the ps3 people getting a week headstart then everyone else starts on ps3 release day.

Why pay for a half baked game, it's not our fault they failed so badly. In this day and age, you better start demanding more for your money or you'll just get walked all over just like what SE is about to do.

If they wipe the characters, no one will come back. It's that simple...
And the reason they CAN'T leave it free till v2 is that some one has to pay for the development. So it becomes even simpler you can:
a) stick around and see were things go.. and come 1 year ahead if it works out (150$ for a 1year sub is less than a days pay)
OR
b) cut your loses and play what ever you want to play.

Can't get the hint yet? The decision is final accept or not move on. Don't want to pay don't.

They arent going to have crap anyways. Decisions are never final. the people make or break any company, people need to get that thru they're heads. a simpleton as yourself is happy with half assed thing and allow companies to walk all over you. Hope that makes you happy slave(or should I say tool.. either works in your case)

SE should leave it free for now. put 1.20 and maybe 1.21 in and stop updating it until 2.0 is released.

oh well, the financial/monetary systems are all failing anyways. not like money is going to worth anything so good luck

tried to play at lunch today... and after spending all my time travelling, I got one shot by a random level 54 mob on my way to a fishing spot.

Then I went to grab some fishing leves at the desk, and it appears my leve allowance has been stuck at 8... so even though I haven't done leves for weeks I only had 8 to use.

I logged off and played glitch... which was actually fun. Fun as soon as I logged on. Fun until I logged off. No waiting for it to become fun. Just fun.

If things don't improve a lot more before they start charging, I will be hard pressed to pay for a game that is less fun than a free to play flash mmo

I noticed this too. Jumped onto a friend's account he never plays yesterday and found that I only had 8 leves. Seems that number increased today so maybe it's possible that you have to actually login to unlock the extra leves. Purpose are defeat. /holdhead

I've logged in several times since the change, just hadn't gone to the leve desk - was figuring I'd save them for a fishing splurge /headdesk

I always read patch notes too so would have been nice if they had indicated that was the case.

Maybe they did and I just missed it, but I don't think so.

I won't blame anyone for choosing to not play after a monthly fee is charged. However, I don't believe most of those saying they won't. I play in a pretty big linkshell. Most of those that complain how they shouldn't be charged for the game probably play on average 40-50 hours a week. We'll find out soon enough, but my guess would server population will steadily rise from now until 2.0, not drop.

Not trying to pick at you, but I'm curious about why you think the population will rise?

I don't see a mass exodus from XIV after the monthly fee is instated, but I'm certain their numbers will go down. Many people who frequent these forums can be quoted as saying "XIV is free to play and gives me something to do while I'm waiting on [insert soon to be released MMO here] to come out. I might as well play because I bought it". I'm just curious what you think it is about XIV post 1.19 and post sub fees that will encourage new players to play or old players to come back.

Please would you be so kind as to enlighten me as why you think they will pick up new players from the point where they start charging ? Do you believe that the 90% of players that left, are just waiting for the moment SE decides to "Implement payment" for them to rejoin ?

To answer the two above me: because of the marketing and the hype of re-creating a new game. There are a new series of missions surrounding the end and re-creating of the current game's world that can only be accessed during this time period.

I could be wrong, but I see new information, concepts and screen-art of this new FFXIV 2.0 creating a lot of hype, similar to the hype before the initial release of 1.0. This will build slowly as we get closer to the end of next year. Only, this time there will be something out already to hold them over - and character data will transfer over. I guess we'll see. Again, I would guess the population would rise slowly and steadily over this type as we get closer to the release date. No, no one is waiting for a monthly fee, but many may be waiting for the game to have a hopeful future.

There is no marketing for XIV as of yet. No company on earth would try to bring any sort of attention to a game that they themselves recently called "an embarrassment to the FF franchise".

This game is not new. It might play like a new game in a year, but that will still be two years beyond it's initial release. Charging a monthly fee for a game that has a lot of promise, but not a lot to keep players interested doesn't seem like any way to get new players to come on or old players to return.

yeah I really struggle to see how this could happen. There will be a large drop in server population. I know so many people just hanging on by a thread and they will cut it rather than pay. Maybe even myself included - I'm on the fence at this point.

they will do it by playing on the whole 2012 apocalypse thing, or they would if they had a marketing department that had a clue. I mean if they marketed it as a chance to play through an apocalypse that might draw players in, even if the whole thing was that you lost your levels and everything you owned but had a special title that allowed you to benefit from certain rare armors etc.

tbh the thing that will most hamper the whole 2.0 thing will probably be the perception that there is no way to catch up to those who played through the pay to play beta

Not to derail but... Having played TERA at GDC2010, before it even launched in Korea (i.e. it's even more solid/polished now), it definitely is not an Aion clone, it plays nothing like Aion. It plays like an action RPG, it feels pretty great. For any who have played Phantasy Star, Dragon's Nest or Monster Hunter, it feels like those games, the controls are quite solid, but it's in an MMO environment.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming...

...It really doesn't matter, it fundamentally does NOT play like Aion.

At all.

I don't know how else to explain this to you. Aion is a traditional MMORPG, Tera is an action MMO and plays like one, you physically dodge attacks, there is actual collision, you can stop enemies from moving forward with your body. You tank by putting yourself between the enemy and the healer, etc. The combat alone is deep and enjoyable enough that I could care less about the rest of the game's content.

I'm not saying we should all quit FFXIV for Tera, but it certainly is nothing like Aion. Nothing at all like it.

And?

Not everything that comes out of Korea is bad, there's just a large volume of MMOs catered to a very different netCafe culture, they make games to be played while talking to other people and eating food. The main problem with Korean MMOs is that they actual gameplay is boring. TERA doesn't suffer from this problem, the combat is quick, responsive and hella fun.

Twid just needs to clarify his initial statement. When you read what he first wrote he makes it sound like TERA is gonna be an AION clone, but then he says they'll be similar in that they will be hot for a few months then fade out. Ramsey should have been able to tell that, but his comprehension lately is failing him ><

TERA will be like AION... Why simple it will be a HUGE boom at start and die in 3months.. if you follow the TERA forums you'll see how badly the NA version is being censored... worse then you can imagine.

...It really doesn't matter, it fundamentally does NOT play like Aion.

So basically it's a full-world Vindictus.

I gave up when TD said SWTOR is going to be a WoW clone. I've played WoW and from what I've seen of TOR, the only thing they might have in come is the standard MMO feature that happened way before WoW was even thought of.

I understand that was part of his argument, It's not that I lack comprehension, I just disagree. The core mechanics of TERA are sound and engaging and are full of tremendous replay value. I can play Monster Hunter for endless hours fighting the same exact bosses over and over. Imagine that gameplay in an open world with far more content.

I didn't feel this way about FFXI.
In fact it was cool to see high level players in AF using awesome abilities. It gave me something to look forward to. Then again those were different times.

As long as its a solid game with a good "initial" starting base and there's a stable economy I could care less how many high level players there are.

TERA going to be a AION copy
SWTOR will be a WoW clone
GW2 I'll get but it's f2p so no sleep lost
Diablo III is a sh*t pile now that you can sell/by items with rl money
Rift is a WoW clone

Tera is original and fun.
SWTOR is a wow clone.
GW2 is free and will be game of the year easily.
Diablo III has the option to not participate in the AH shenanigans and play like a... Diablo game.
Rift is like WoW just more dynamic.
Blade & Soul is Tera on crack.
FFXIV is troll dad.
FFXI is confused jackie chan.

But at the end of the day all you really needed was Runescape with some better graphics.

I don't get how so many people complain about a few bucks. Go out and get a beer at a high end restaurant or play a game for a month... If the white knights really want the game to succeed, imagine the money goin to the dev team for resources as they redo the game. I'm stickin around cause I like it already.

One of these I'm much more likely to enjoy than the other. Value.

And that covers the major titles.

Said this in another thread but now I found the person this works for the most.
Twiddledumb saying Rift is a Wow close and SWTOR will be a wow clone and they suck because of that. Yes FFXIV seems to be going to be a lot like WoW/Rift/SWTOR. Look at what they are doing with the game. adding jump/ added auto attack/ adding instant dungeon/ adding cross server groups/ adding bigger more flashy weapons and armor/ making questing the main way to level up.....and From this screen shot has the exact same UI as Rift if you switched 2 things around.

Now I dont mind companies using something that works, I think its a great idea. I just hate idiots who bash one company for doing it then praise another for doing the exact same thing.

Twiddledumb's logic= Wow creates the letter E, then Rift see that Letter E works really well so they use it also but change it just a little making it e. Twiddledumb complain that Rift ripped it off and so he will never play it and it sucks and unoriginal. FFXIV sees letter E is working great so they use it but also make a little change Ǝ. Now Twiddledumb sees this and is awe struck at the awesomeness which is FFXIV and there infinite wisdom. He also feels they should be rewarded the Nobel prize for this new invention.

Please prove me wrong other wise.

FFXIV obliviously Rift clone....*his logic being used here*

Only reason some people were playing was because it was a free mmo, to them this is a denial of service and they are mad (some are genuinly against it due to principle but given Squares history if that's you then why are you playing a SE MMO).

Truth is they will see a dip in numbers, but 2k paying subscribers > 10k leeches, and if V2 is going to be a success they need to do a lot better than just attract those few back (or keep them on board). They need a massive influx of new players to offset the massive investment so losing that 8k is a non-issue.

Charging now is win win for them, it's kinda a crappy move cause you are paying them to beta test it for the v2 players but that's Square all over.

My time is more precious to me than the money. If you like the game enough to waste your free time on it then pay for it, if you don't why the **** are you wasting your time on it anyway.

I can't really join in on being upset about the decision to finally start charging. Disappointed that the F2P will be over? Sure. It's been fun at times. It'll be a bummer to let go of the progress & friends I've made in the game, but I've played it like a beta all along. Knowing the time may come where I pay or leave. And if that time came too soon for me, I'd have to leave. But I got some enjoyment out of it and SE got another guinea pig to provide feedback.

I'll pass on paying for the game for now. That doesn't mean I suddenly hate the game, SE, & people who are willing to pay for it. Just a personal decision by a gamer & consumer. No big deal.
