Dear Yoshi, Regarding 2.0 and the state of the game.Follow

Dear Yoshi,

First of all I would like to say I appreciate the hard work you and your team are putting into the game. We all know how horrid launch was, we all know it has improved some. However, the game as you well know needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. While you are on your way to this the game is in a constant beta stage, and we the players are expected to fund the venture. Do your investors not believe in the project enough to fund it? Is this a last ditch effort before a game shutdown? We haven already provided you the box sales revenue, and have provided feedback that will guide you. I however can not pay for the game in its current state, the interface is still laggy, and will be for a long time. You are facing multiple large mmo's that will undoubtedly steal some of your player base SWTOR, Guild Wars II, Neverwinter, Terra, to name a few. The math dictates that you will lose about a third of your current players who will not pay yet. You will lose more to the above games. Leaving your servers barren, maybe requiring a merge just to play. For this game to work, you need more money, more staff and a much quicker turnaround time. I love FF and hope it all works, if so I will try again in 2.0 where you will no doubt charge us for an expansion pack.
Sincerely free labor beta tester, who cant pay to go to work anymore.

2.0 will be free of charge for existing users. A new boxed client will be sold for PS3 and new PC users.

The game has been a black hole for their money, I'm surprised it's taken this long to re-implement a subscription fee. You must remember that the game also has a large Japanese audience, which may be more likely to stick around due to not giving a rat's *** about most of the other MMOs launching in the coming year.

I appreciate your statement but would like to add following:
Quote:
Do your investors not believe in the project enough to fund it?

Investors don't fund this game, SE is directly paying for it with their own coffer's.

And:
I have to question what they mean by "2.0 available for purchase"... I really don't want to have to actually buy the game again, to get the new disk for install, just so I can play it :( Already paid for collectors.

I for one will pay the monthly on this game, it's worth it imho, and I don't want to miss an event.

I still up-rated you because you said it in a reasonable tone.

Thanks!

Like Final Fantasy XI, the game specs will be extremely high for the time, but in about 5 years, an average machine can run it on max settings with little to no issues. Tanaka also expressed interest in making a benchmark program available.

Yoshida mentioned that it will be available for download - for free - before PS3 release.

It means they'll be re-launching the game at retail outlets? New copies will be on sale with the 2.0 client on sale? If you already own the game you can just update.

Service will come down, data will be transferred to new servers and XIV will be re-launched in all it's splendor and glory via download for PC players. Almost 100% sure that the PS3 release will come a short time after 2.0 hits PC as the download is being made available prior to PS3 beta testing.

I know that Yoshi is saying they will not charge us for 2.0, but I don't think that's how it will play out is all. I think they will at that time need the revenue and decide they have implemented enough content to justify it. I am not even saying that would be crazy wrong. On the investment note, they do pay for the game with Squenix. Make no mistake that large stakeholders carry weight in these decisions. I know Yoshi needs to protect his career and will give it his all. I just believe the decision to pay is not coming from him at all. I think if were his call it would still remain free, so we can all work out the bugs and help develop an epic next gen MMO. I want this game to succeed, and I know it would have been much easier to **** down the servers and redevelop the game. I have an epic respect for the fact they continue to work and allow us to play. I just wish they would man up and increase their staff size and pump this all out faster, get this games reputation up.

It is for this same reason that you are being asked to pay for 1.0 over the next year. Your investment of a monthly fee, should you wish to pay it, will be what supports SE in bringing new content into the game; content that was previously stated would be implemented prior to the reinstatement of monthly fees. You should not expect to have to pay anything more than those monthly fees barring a full expansion to XIV.

you do realize their staff size is 240 people? lol.

Things like this take time. Everyone wants to prance around on forums and pretend they know the developmental aspect of gaming. All you know is the finished product. These are swift changes for the amount that is being changed. Most people only see what is on top and are not appreciating the extreme changes under the hood.

They said they will not recharge for 2.0 - not only would this be the final suicide, it would make absolutely no sense for them to say it and then change it. We know they have lost money, but the costs to have FFXIV completely fail and falter would be a lot more costly.

Doesn't surprise me at all. The population is so low right now that the subscription fee would not even come close to covering (re)development costs. All it would do is drive more people away while hardly affecting their budget.

You're delusional if you think any of these games are going to be the next big thing.

Those games were just a few examples, there are tons. Each may impact FFXIV hard to say really. But as for the dev comment, I do understand how much coding and development is involved, and that is why I made my comment. A staff of 240 people, is incredibly small in my opinion. 650,000 copies sold first week. at say $65 per copy = that's a straight up 42 mil right there. Which ain't gonna cover their costs.

You can rule Tera out, gave the JP version a whirl when it was first released and sensed incoming failure, in fact Tera gets almost as many negative reviews as XIV does.

Subscription fee for that pile is 35 bux a month...

I want FFXIV to succeed. If it means shelling out $12.95/mo for hte next year, I have no problem with it. Don't want to pay? See ya, we won't miss you. SE doesn't read these forums, so if you're making a post about it, you just want attention and people to try and tell you how great it is. My question is, do you play this game, every day, for free? Have you for the past year? I have. If htey put in subscription 6 months ago, I'd still be playing. After reading that all the forums are filling upw ith crap like this, I think i'm going to stay away from forums for a while.

While I agree with you for the most part, let's not be a jerk. If someone doesn't find the game worth it, then there is nothing wrong with that. The only people I have a problem with are those who say the current game isn't up to standards compared to other MMOs out and yet will still be around after the monthly fee. I know these people have a machine capable of playing any of those other MMOs since they are playing FFXIV.

If you honestly think another MMO is more worth your time and your $14 a month, what is keeping you here playing, and posting online how you don't enjoy the game?

Must be awesome to know how good/bad games turn out to be. So what made you buy FFXIV then, because let's be fair the game is far, I mean fááááááááááááááááááááááár from good.

Do not post these kind of things here. Opinions are nice but post them as opinions not as your own "little facts".

Garbage, it's not "korean" because you reach max level in 1 week, it's a failure in asia because there's no grind and no content. and it won't work in the west because it has no content.

>GW2

hype hype hype hype, vaporware game that's been announced for 5 years already. All hype and promises. Will crash and burn.

>SWTOR

Very mediocre game, but has a ton of hype and a huge fanbase from both bioware and star wars as well as casuals, this might succeed regardless of how completely average it is, just cause.

Making a new game for us seems completely retarded, is it easier to just make a new and better MMO than improving this one? this game has only been a year old it's no like the stuff is ancient or the current engine itself is completely inept.

So if none of these MMOs are any good, and I'll mark that down in the opinion column, will their success come down to how many fans they have? I'm a fan of FF games. You'll never get me to admit to being a fan of the franchise because I'm watching it swirl down the toilet lately, but I play games that I enjoy. These games coming may be bad in your opinion, but I'd be willing to put money down that none of them will have to reboot two years later after going through several metamorphoses already.

WoW is going to stay on top for the foreseeable future. MMO developers need to wake up and stop thinking they can make "the next big MMO" because they can't. That sort of thinking is what led to the mess SE is in right now. If you aren't WoW then 200-500k subscribers is what success looks like.

They should have just made FFXI HD rather than starving a profitable IP to death because "we wanted to do something new". If they'd just licensed the unreal engine or whatever and got to work in 2008 they could have had it out in 2009 and avoided this whole fiasco.

Instead they took 4 years to develop their own in house engine which turned out to be slow and out dated, then ended up having to develop the same game twice because their first try turned out to be unsalvageable.

Are we playing the same game? Since when is the game engine for XIV not the most un-optimized game engine you've ever seen?

And yes, it IS easier for them to scrap the steaming pile Tanaka left them with and build something from scratch or they wouldn't be doing it. In fact, they stated several times in the information provided on the 14th that there are no more workarounds after 1.23, which is why they're developing 2.0 in parallel.

I'm pretty sure that the 4 million a month from FFXI subscriptions that they're funneling directly into the FFXIV black hole can cover the development costs.

@ Lobivopis
The idea is that the game pays for itself at some point. XI is nearly all profit at this point, but it can't carry XIV alone. Hence, they're starting to charge soon.

@ Olorinus
Devs in the official forums have hinted that there could be completely new areas added to XIV. Zones, not stuff like Walk of Echoes or just re-skinned versions of the current areas. Given the amount of people still interested in that content and the length of time it'll take to put XIV back together, I wouldn't be surprised.

XI, you mean?

That's a change cause there was a whole thread asking for new zones and camate answered 'aren't you excited about reworked content from 6 years ago? We have a road map! (poor *******)

New areas are definitely in high demand and the development team is well aware of this. For the year ahead of us, the development team’s main focus is on raising the level cap to 99, the adjustments surrounding this, as well as the addition of content to go along with it. Due to this, the development team does not have any immediate plans to implement new areas; however, they would like to try their best to do so going forward.

There have been a lot of threads and comments related to expansions and add-ons, so I'll shed some light on the current direction. The main focus for this year is to upgrade and expand content through version updates. For example, the current roadmap is filled to the brim with what we feel are exciting and valuable updates. So for this year, we do not have plans at the current moment for expansions or add-ons.

ok I engaged in hyperbole - but the fact is people want confirmation they will expand the world and the lore of XI - sure it is fun to try reworked 6 year old content - but come on, I deserve a little bit more for my ongoing sub
