Help with the Materia SystemFollow

I haven't really played around much with materia other than making a few low level ones, but I'm a bit confused as to how it works. I just hit level 30 on pug earlier and swapped to a new weapon. Rather than sell the old one (which I could have done for almost 100k), I decided to turn it into a materia. The weapon was r26, so I figured I'd probably get a tier 2 or 3 materia, but after making it I ended up with a tier 1 fire resist. Basically, a completely worthless materia. My question is, how is the tier of materia determined? Is there a certain cutoff based on level, or is it based on item or what? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The following is the consensus I've seen.

The maximum quality, if you will (I-IV) is determined by the gear's optimal rank (40-50 => IV, 30-29 => III, 20-29 ==> II, everything else I).

However, for any given level, there is a chance you will generate non-maximum materia. So a rank 50 item can yield Grade I materia.

So, max threshold determined by rank of gear, but there's always a probabilistic element.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for the info. It makes sense, although I can't say I'm too excited about that prospect. Kinda sucky to lose 100k gil to random chance. I wonder if this is working as intended or just a messed up algorithm?

That as well as:
Each Grade has a min, mid, max range, meaning a IV hp+ can have 50,55,60 HP.

Having armor fixed to 100% before braking to materia is said to give you better odds of better result.

+1.+2,+3 play a role though unconfirmed. Same with moon phase.

There are a few rumors as well BUT, i those are more of a superstition.

This be the materia so you can stand in the fire for the Ifrit fight. That materia is invaluable.

Its personal preference and all, but yes we need to educate WoW players that this is OUR game, these are Characters and not Toons. Time to beat that into them one at a time.

Quick question here as I've only just started playing the last couple days. How long does it take to get an item to 100% so you can convert to materia?

But if you're "standing in the fire" with your tier 1 fire resist you'll probably get loled right out of the fight. I've had the same thing happen to me breaking down high level gear and it can really grind your gears..
