Which of these materia would be better choices for tank gear? I currently have Bloodthirst IV (HP) on 3 pieces and Vitality IV on one. I'm still unclear on exactly what benefits VIT brings in this game aside from a very small increase (1:1) in HP. Should I scrap the Vitality IV and just put a Bloodthirst IV there instead?

Id say both are helpful for a tank. Stick to the ones you have or like. When you have more materia, more money, more time then
try to put 2 or more even more materia into one piece of gear. Each category has a cap, so you can benefit from both
(vit and hp) pretty nice.

considering there hasn't been any formal testing of attributes, i would personally favor HP over VIT simply because you can visually see the impact of the HP+ materia, whereas the VIT => def conversion is still pretty much speculative at this point.

Yeah, it's impossible to tell which is better for sure. If you think damage spikes could be an issue, HP can help, if not, VIT is probably the way to go.

When you consider that most high end boss attacks that really hurt tend to be magic damage... vitality is pretty useless, even if the impact on physical damage is decent.

You can only have max 280HP bonus from Materia, after that all need to go to VIT.

Or that might be translation error.

I don't think that is the case, I was pretty sure you simply cannot gain bonus from more than 5 or 7 of the same materia, I can't really remember the number...

Don't think it's a hard cap on a specific stat, but type of materia, regardless of level. In which case, I'd go bloodthirst (HP) then lifethirst (HP/MP).

This is your best opiton for the time being, likely until 1.20, when attributes make their return.

I went with Pure HP on my first attachment and will go with VIT if i attempt a second. As on the lines of 280, i thought so as well until i equipped another HP materia and i ended up with +295HP. Not sure what the cap is really or how it works.. The reasoning for HP is for example on any endgame HNM,(or ifrit for example), he will be hitting you for max damage in the upper range of 700 or so. VIT's damage mitigation really hasnt been confirmed yet so that extra 280+ HP is really going to help. With a full PT bonus, food and HP Materia im running with 4380HP

Since the HP cap from Materia is 280 it would be ideal to get as close to that on 2 pieces of gear as you can. This can be done by combining 2 or more materia to one piece of gear. If you won the lottery of melds you could actually get the cap on 2x pieces of gear with 2x 70 HP Blood's on say the belt and 2x 70 blood's on the legs. Realistically this will not happen though so you could make up what difference you have by adding VIT materia to the chest to reach the 280 cap and leaving all other gear slots open for Evasion, M. Evasion DEX STR or whatever mitigation stat you like. I did a small write up on this in the MRD section. Scrutiny go!

Id save your belt slot for some Enmity+ materia. No need to put HP there. Also when you attach materia there is a higher chance of success if you either go with a tier 3 for second meld or a VIT materia. 2 of the same type reduces success.
