Pumpkin Contest Rigged or just incompetanceFollow

Hi everyone, did anyone else enter the zam competition and find their entry mysteriously disappear?

Well mine did and that was after receiving confirmation that it was received. The excuse I have been given it was given the wrong tag and put in the pile as the ff11 pumpkins (it wasn't shown in the ffxi pumpkins either). Now this seems stupid as the contest required

Full Name
Character Name This is a 2 part name that ff11 doesn't have
ZAM Username (if applicable)
E-mail address
Server Name ffxiv names are town from ff games not summon/guardian forces/avatars like ff11
Country of Residence
At least one photo of pumpkin in light
At least one photo of pumpkin lit in the dark

and the biggest sign that the pumpkin was to be entered in to the ffxiv competition is the email address ffxivteam@zam.com

The competition was designed to finish on the 29th that gives them a solid day to choose the "25" best entries to be displayed on the 30th as per their own speel. The showed 4 on 31st and took them till the 1st to show the rest now depending on your time zone winners weren't announced till the day after they were supposed to.

I pointed out my missing pumpkin to pikko and received an email back saying it would be added to the entries which it hasn't, did i expect to win not really but would i like someone to show some appreciation that i submitted a pumpkin with approx 4 hours (1 hour working through designs 3 hours carving) work to promote their website and community. Did anyone else have their pumpkin disappear or was it just dumb luck that mine was the only one affected.

I have to ask, have you ever had a sock go missing after you do laundry? Has a cashier ever given you back a penny fewer than he/she should have?

I knew that Moogle plush was too good to be true; I think this goes deeper than Zam, man. o_o

Ahh yes the sarcastic response, if it just went missing and they required me to sent it again so that it could be added to the page i would be more than happy to do so, but its the fact that even after the competition winner was announced and i pointed out it was missing and pikko said "I'm really sorry, both the XI and XIV entries were in the same tag, so I simply missed yours. I'll add it in today!" which is now over 24 hours ago. I've run many websites and dealt with wiki sites so its very easy to add content something they don't seem to be able to do.

Well said, RamseySylph. While I do understand that the OP put in a lot of effort to submit an artistic piece, attacking the organizers because of a simple mistake is a bit over-the-top. Chill man, post a link to your end result in the forums somewhere and I'm sure you'll get all of the artistic appreciation you deserve.

I am sorry I did not post your pumpkin as I said, but ended up being sick yesterday. I will still be putting your pumpkin up and I am still very sorry that I missed your pumpkin, but this post seems unnecessary. Sure, your email goes to ffxiv@zam.com, but all this does is send an email to my Gmail inbox. The FFXI pumpkins go there too. This is why I told you I got them all mixed up together.

You don't have to explain yourself, Pikko, we've got your back on this.

edit:
On that note, any way we can just lock this thread and move past the childishness of it?

I've posted the pumpkin here: http://ffxiv.zam.com/wiki/11XIV_Pumpkin_Chocobo#Wiki

Once again, I apologize for missing it. I didn't freaking RIG the contest though. Sheesh.

Is that a goblin riding a chocobo? I'd think it was an XI pumpkin too, considering that's happened in XI, and not in XIV.

Regardless, the Chocobo's detail is pretty good, compared to the competition. Artistic credit is due on that point.

Look, I'm not an idiot, I just made a mistake and honestly, it was because you emailed me asking about your pumpkin, which then pushed it to the very top of my list, which was where all my emails from Square Enix were hovering because those had the most activity and therefore, I just didn't see it among the lower emails which were primarily the entries.

And Gmail doesn't use folders, it uses labels. I admit I should have tagged them separately, which I will do next year, but given that in 2009 we had over a hundred pumpkins and the fact that I never know how many will come in, it was just easier to have Gmail label them for me automatically.

I don't think the contest was rigged, nor do I feel that "incompetence" quite covers what happened here. I would go with badly planned. Perhaps a catch-all email account is not the best destination for contest submissions? Perhaps it was the cheapest and easiest way to receive submissions. In that case, a filter and special label could have been created, along with a contest rule stating that the email subject must be: "2011 FFXIV Pumpkin Carving Contest Submission."

This setup would have allowed maximum clarity. It took me two minutes to come up with it. I would think that at least that much time could be spared to plan a contest that's being cross-promoted on the Lodestone. Of course, it's important to note that I'm saying all of this with the benefit of hindsight, which tends to illuminate the proper path rather clearly.

Domeh, I dig your pumpkin. It clearly took you quite a bit of time, and it has a level of detail and unique art-style that I'm not seeing in most of the other submissions. I imagine you could have placed if your submission was properly handled. Having said that, this thread started off with an accusation, and I think you could've gotten your point across in a more conciliatory manner... but ****, this is the internet.

Pikko, I'm guessing most people here know what it's like to be sick and get things confused. I hope you get better quickly, and better luck on the Pumpkin thing next year. I know how it feels to be called out for a human mistake. Take it in stride, learn a lesson from it if you can find one, and move on.

All others, put yourself in Domeh's shoes and think of how you'd feel if you put in hours of work and followed the rules, then didn't even have your submission considered. I understand attacking the tone of his complaint, but his complaint is still valid. Make sure that you understand that Pikko did ***** up, and Domeh has a reasonable complaint. White Knighting has become an art form on par with trolling, and as such, you should be held to the same standards by which trolls are judged... don't be so obvious.

I think just about everyone is wrong in this thread. To the OP, there's no reason to get hostile. They made a mistake, and it has been corrected. Instead of being a wise-*** after the fact, you could have been thankful that Pikko took the time to fix it.

To all the people bashing the OP, at least see it from their perspective. They spent a lot of time making a pumpkin for the competition, and it got missed. I'd be upset too. I'm not justifying a rant about it, but some of the comments towards the OP are just downright rude when they are just upset to have wasted a lot of time and (at the time of posting) still not had the pumpkin put up.

Everyone just needs to lighten up a bit... sheesh.

I'm sorry my original post came across as hostile but feeling like i was being fobbed off with an email being told it would be added to the entries and then wasn't made me a little angry so i posted here on the zam forum to get my complaint attention. To Pikko it was a genuine i'm sorry that you where sick and a positive offer to help with your email client. I should point out why so that everyone understands my reasoning in emailing you after submission was that I didn't receive an entry number again something that the speel for the competition said would happen. On a positive note the entries this year are amazing.

As one of the judges for the FFXIV part of the contest I took into account 3 things when giving an entry a score:

Originality, detail, and "glowing appeal". As far as "glowing appeal" goes just consider this kinda like how the light gives it depth or shading or whatnot...

While I do believe your pumpkin is good(I liked how you made the chocobo look in the 'dark' picture), even taking it into account now, I feel that it would not have changed my personal choices for top three.

Nevertheless... it is completely uncalled for to get hostile with any of the staff at ZAM. If Pikko says that it was a simple mistake, then I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that it was indeed a mistake. I am now locking the thread. If you have any further issues, please include them in a PM to the appropriate party.
