Well, if you understand that they aren't basically rehauling everything for no reason, you can join with realistic expectations. It's going to be clunky, dated, and over-all hard to grasp, but it can still be enjoyable. Plus you are guaranteed to have significant updates coming out for the next year.

This has not been a good sell so far.

You only need one reason to play FFXIV:

You're really not going to get a good-sell. The game was developed by a group of idealists who didn't think take into account how people would react to their vision. They released the game and were in shock to find out that their "vision" did not play out like they thought. Since then a new team (been about 8 or 9 months now?) was brought in to rebuild the entire game, from the ground up. What this means to you is: 1) Opportunity to pay for a beta view of the world that is about to change drastically. 2) Cool mounts and achievement rewards that no one else will be able to get once the 2.0 version is released. 3) Nose and Eye bleeds from the incredible graphics and bone numbing grinding.

Despite the painful parts of the game, I find myself constantly drawn to it. It is addictive in it's own way, but you have to be willing to work, this is not a game for the weak-at-heart.

Wait for 2.0.

But 2.0 is forever away. Is there a big incentive to buying the collectors edition? My local best buy still has a copy of the normal 14.

Imagine, you are riding a unicorn down the side of a candy mountain drinking from a goblet filled with the laughter of children.

This game's better.

See all the signatures of people with multiple level 50's? That takes a ton of time. You don't spend a ton of time playing a game that isn't fun.

My only bit of advice for when you purchase this game, select a server with a higher population. While great, playing an MMO by yourself kind of sucks. I am in parties every day, exploring, xping, etc. Without the people, the game would be a lot less exciting.

I'm on mysidea, the 2nd most populated server. Selbina is the highest, and I think besaid the 3rd highest, last i checked at least.

Bare in mind, the game is not *perfect*, but with proper expectations, it's a **** of a lot of fun. Everything functions without bugs or glitches, and the world is beautiful. On conjuror I can cure-bot in a party, on marauder I can kick everything in sight's ***. There's a lot of content, I have done a ton of quests, saw beautiful cutscenes, etc. I have a couple blog posts at http://www.pocket-hockey.com that describe my experiences, with lots of screen shots, if you're interested in some more in depth details.

Also I have 3 CE's and a standard edition. CE can be had for $30 on amazon or ebay. I have myself and my mule, and my two kids are getting CE's for xmas since they want to play every time they see me playing.

That is awesome, can't wait for my 2 y/o to be old enough to play. She loves sitting in my lap watching me play.

Two things:

1) Probably 90% of the population who has tried the game has quit in disappointment already.
2) No, you really don't want to be addicted to a MMO. Luckily for you, FFXIV has a very low chance of causing that to happen.

If you really want to try out a good FF MMO, get FFXI. Check back in on FFXIV in a year when the game relaunches.

Just play the **** game. You aren't going to accept anything anyone says unless it is going to convince you to play it anyway. Buy the game, play it and keep playing if you like it.

lol, you can't alt tab out of full screen? Is this true?

What you do is run the game in windowed mode, but set the resolution to match your desktop resolution, then download and run this little app: http://pocket-hockey.com/FFXIVWindower.exe

It will automatically reposition your screen to hide the boarders simulating full screen mode, but allowing you to alt tab out of the game. It was made by the guy who made windower.

Correct. FFXI had the same problem for 9 years and they still haven't fixed that either.

Don't play XI... it's old and boring if you don't have any friends to start up with. No one is going to be a low level, and you're going to be all by yourself. The magic is gone from that game.

XIV is a decent experience, although it still has some problems. To be honest, the same magic that was there for XI just isn't there for XIV yet.
