Email recieved 9 am central time today

Dear Square Enix Member,

You are receiving this email because Square Enix detected a limited server intrusion on December 12, 2011, and temporarily suspended the US/JP editions of the SQUARE ENIX MEMBERS service in order to conduct an investigation.

Based on our investigation, we have found no evidence at this point that any personal information was accessed. User login credentials and credit card information are not stored on the affected server. We are continuing to investigate.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by the temporary suspension of the SQUARE ENIX MEMBERS service. We take data security extremely seriously and we regret any inconvenience this may have caused our customers and fans. We appreciate your patience and support at this time as we finalize our investigation in the next few days.

Any updates will be posted on our corporate website at: http://www.square-enix.com/na/

Sincerely,

SQUARE ENIX

If you are never asked for any information back, it's probably not phishing. Also this is genuine, a few video game periodicals wrote about it.

the odd thing that threw me off though is i have no problems logging into game or official members site which is why this struck me as suspicious.

My wife and I got the e-mail as well, but that doesn't mean it's not a scam. That said, it doesn't ask you to do anything, so I doubt that it's anything illicit... if it is, then it's one of the worst scams I've ever seen. XD

I ignored it. I believe it's 100% a phishing scam. The link in the email didn't match where it was leading you. (check the url on the bottom of your browser when you hover over the link)

Also, the official emails from SquareEnix are always end up in my inbox, this email sent ended up my spam folder. That can be suspicious.

ecactly why would MEMBER.EU.se send out a email for MEMBERS.se

the fact it states member not members and claims to be NA but address is EU reeks of phish.

hovering over link in email doesn;t seem to work on firefox with noscript and ad block so ill just completely ignore it as my SE memberS account is fine

SE Members got hacked a few days ago, I won't be opening anything from them. However I got 2 emails from them today same as the rest. It's likely a glitch in thier mail program sending 2 emails since both sets are english?

Easiest way to see if it is a scam is to go to http://release.square-enix.com/na/2011/12/13_01.html on the SE main page and read it from the 'horses' mouth.

from what i read from your original post, it never said that you specifically had any problems with your account, and it never asked for any information. i don't know how you thought it would be suspicious at all.

also since these things get translated from JP to english, i wouldn't take exactly what it says word for word either. there could be a mis translation as well.

There e-mails come from that server, as did their free-trial emails. Saw it on engadget as well :) That said, I clicked on the free trial one, didn't take me anywhere bad.

I also did a sandbox in it to be sure lol

It's safe and legit. click the url, and you go to SE's site. It's not uncommon for sites to have a dozen different url's considering hte maount of mail they have. And if you click the link, it doesn't ask you for login credentials.
