Back a week - my thoughtsFollow

I played FFXIV on release and lasted about a month. I returned to EVE online and a bit of WOW. I actually forgot about FFXIV until I received the email stating that monthly charges have been re-instated.

On the basis of the email I chose to give FFXIV another go and hoped that the introduction of P2P would weed out a lot of people I would rather not play with. I had just started playing SWTOR and to be honest I wasn't taken. It all looked a bit easy and un-challenging.

I have been back about a week and find that nothing much has changed in FFXIV. but version 2.0 promises a lot. Leve’s are repetitive, retainer system is just a hassle, the interface is clunky and content is very poor generally. With the very low populations I don’t think an AH would add anything at the moment.

But I am hooked again and am using the time to level every job as high as possible. Do you think the developers will reward people that have stuck with FFXIV when v2.0 is released? It will certainly give everyone a head start!

I think the difference between FFXIV and other MMORPG's out at the moment is not the game but the player base. As with FFXI the game attracts the more mature player and it is nice not to have childish shouts every 10 seconds. WOW was the worst for that. I would rather not be able to do a quest because it hasn’t been implemented yet than not being able to do it because the stats on my gloves aren’t up to much. I can see SWTOR going that way soon.

A big thank you to everyone in game that has taken the time to say hello and reply to my questions. It would be nice to join an active LS though as it does feel as though I am playing a single player games at time.

I am on Cornila

.. and yes hooked.. I wasn’t before as I left FFXI for FFXIV and well the change was dramatic too say the least. I guess I was hoping for FFXI + but I didn’t get that, still don’t get that but there are touches.

WoW was just easy until level cap then the ******** started - you can’t do this because your legs aren’t as good as mine etc. I guess FFXIV is in some way a fantasy version of EVE. Complex and not all about killing everything

FFXIV isn’t a full on all action game. Its take your time enjoy the game and try everything. that appeals

Hmm, have you done anything with the companies yet? That probably wasn't around when you first played. That starts when you hit level 22.

eh, was hoping you were on Karnak.

FFXIV was always a sort of FFXI+, and as it progresses, many of the FFXI systems are finding their way into FFXIV. It should already be very familiar to anyone who has played FFXI at this point.

The fact the FFXIV isn't a full-on level-cap zerg was one of the original intents of the developers, and it will always be a part of the game. I'm sure you saw some functions of that in FFXI (Genkai for example). Expect many thing like that in FFXIV.

So, really, which is the superior game? FFXI or FFXIV? In terms of content and refinement, right now, FFXI. By a long shot. But if you want to start an MMO from the ground floor, give FFXIV a shot; FFXIV will surpass FFXI in terms of content and refinement at some point.

Same here. The game is definitely much better now (auto-attack, simpler recipes, combo chains, UI). That being said, SE still has a lot of work to do, but I think they are headed in the right direction now. Looking forward to patch 1.21 and eventually 2.0 and whatever else in between and beyond.

That's not necessarily a given IMO. FFXI acquired a pretty decent amount of content over the years, through updates, full fledged expansions and mini expansions. Well over a year into FFXIV's life, we haven't even seen the full "vanilla" version released and we don't know what type of numbers it'll be able to bring in, and whether it'll be enough for SE to pour more resources into significant content over the years. Not saying it's impossible for FFXIV to surpass FFXI, but it's premature to say it's going to happen.

As for people sticking around, they have implied that we are getting a special mount. The mounts are coming, and there are 3 of them, there are 3 companies... So, as a guess, each company will have a type of mount given to them.

The three mounts listed were a Drake, a Goobbue, and an Ahriman. Personally I would love to have any of them really, but I am kinda hoping for the Goobbue.

There are also several achievements that are not going to be possible once 2.0 comes out, such as the hidden mission quests that are still on-going. And possibly the current Primal fights (at least as they exist now).

However, they are being very illusive about what will and will not be there at the release (other than the fact that they said they are resetting the main story quests, speculation on if they are talking Company Quests or City/old Level Quests.

Also, if you are looking for things to do, one of the items I have been looking at are the achievements. Once I finish getting at least Thm to 50, I am planning on finishing off the Monster Hunter achievements, as well as getting that nasty little moogle. Then maybe get my pickaxe, and then focus on crafting achievements. And of course, I can't forget about the Butcher's Crown.
