Help with picking a computerFollow

#1 Jan 22 2012 at 12:38 AM Rating: Decent
Im wanting a new gaming computer, and im wanting one that will run FFXIV along with other newer games.

Im trying to decide between building my own, or just buying one.

If i bought one, it would be the new Alienware. Here's the specs:

3.3 GHz Intel Core i3-2120,
Nvidia Geforce GT545 graphics,
4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 1TB harddrive.

Thats for $699

I may opt for the top of the line model which would be:

3.4 Ghz Intel Core i7-2600
Nvidia Geforce GTX 555 graphics
8GB of ram. 1tb hdd.

That one costs a little over $1200

Anyone know which would be better? Would the cheaper model run FFXIV decently? Or should i just give up and build my own? I LOVE the design of Alienware, but i feel that i could easily build a more powerful one.

Help? 0.o

Let me put it this way:

This is one of my PCs that run FFXIV perfectly fine on full settings using CCC to handle the eye candy. This is custom built for about $420 at the time (2 years ago) ignoring monitors that I already owned, so basically either of those would be good (I personally hate Nvidia cards though) but if I were you I'd build one.

100x cheaper to do so as with Alienware you're paying for name honestly. XIV isn't heavily optimized so regardless you'll get some performance issues every now and then in various areas (i.e inside of a tree rapes your video card) but..what else do you want to use your PC for?

Thats pretty nice. How well does it run other games? Like STar Wars The Old Republic, or Skyrim.

And does yours have a HDMI out? I would be running it through HDMI to my flat screen TV.

Ill be doing mostly just gaming. Maybe a bit of music or video production down the road. but thats about it.

Thanks so much for the help by the way! They Final Fantasy community is lovely! :D

It does. It runs Skyrim very well on high (never tried ultra though) video production while it does pretty well, you'll likely want a stronger CPU and GPU, though this PC is a good baseline to start with. There's no problems with running SWTOR either but that game is already scaled back in terms of performance/graphics so any modern PC would run it well.

There's a few upgrades you could do, but if you want a cheap base to start with, something like mine does the trick.
