Problem with graphics driversFollow

I just bought 14. Been waiting a long time to do so until I knew they had begun making improvements. When I tried to play I got this error as soon as I tried to launch it saying "Final Fantasy 14 has stopped working." I know this was a problem for a lot of people and I've been reading up for the last two days trying to figure out what was wrong.

I tried reinstalling drivers, making sure in game resolution is the same as my desktops (had that problem with another game), and using driver-sweeper to make sure all AMD graphics files were erased before a reinstall. Pretty much tried anything I saw worked for someone else. I figured this was a problem with so many people that there had to be a solution found by now, seeing as how all the threads I saw were at least eight months old.

After trying to reinstall my graphics drivers I found that the date on the last update was 12/17/09. My Catalyst Control Center is the newest version. Anytime I try to update it says I have the latest drivers. I found a post from someone who has an Asus like myself who said they had the same problem and that Asus had stopped updating the drivers for this specific card. He then went on to say he obtained them from somewhere else but never mentioned where. This post was over a year old so I didn't ask there. I guess I was just curious to know if anyone had any other ideas as to what I could do since I'm at a loss myself.

I'm not a complete ditz when it comes to computers but I'm not a genius either. I just know I've been running Skyrim on ultra settings, as well as WoW and had no problems. I have also been told before my graphics card isn't that friendly with certain games and maybe this is just one of those. Just not really certain why I can run something as high quality as Skyrim even if the drivers are old and not XIV. Gonna post my specs below and if any more info is needed I'll be glad to provide it. Thanks in advance.

Don't update your drivers, always do a fresh install. There may be something lingering that is causing an issue for you. My advice is to get something like DriverSweeper and use it to completely uninstall your drivers, reboot and then do a fresh install for the latest drivers. Try that and see if it clears your issue.

...and using driver-sweeper to make sure all AMD graphics files were erased before a reinstall.

OP said they tried using DriverSweeper for a fresh install to no avail.

I have two ideas:
1. A 5870 is definitely strong enough to run this game at decent settings; hardware is not your problem. As far as updated drivers, you can always find the most recent updates for your graphics card here:

2. This kind of sounds like the typical DirectX version problem many new players get when installing XIV for the first time. You did mention you play Skyrim on this PC though, so I'd think that you have the latest version. Regardless, I'd double check.. FFXIV requires DirectX 9.0b (someone plz correct me if I'm wrong).
You can find the download here:

Other than that, maybe some other process is getting in the way. Try an application like GameBooster to kill most unnecessary processes.

Are you trying to play windowed or full screen? How far into launching the FFXIV client do you get before getting the error?

Pretty much as soon as I click the FF-XIV icon on my desktop to start the game. Sometimes my screen blinks black and then the box comes up saying that it stopped working. I've tried windowed and fullscreen just to see if I could get either to work. So I really haven't gotten anywhere.

I have DirectX 11, and I have the latest version of Catalyst from AMD. Just tried to use GameBooster too and got nothing. I appreciate the help and any more ideas you might have. Just frustrating to finally buy the game and not be able to play it lol.

Just by chance, can you open Internet Explorer? FFXIV uses it as its login window, which it seems you're not even able to get to that point.

If somehow you've uninstalled IE or it has become corrupt and crashes by itself, it would explain why you can't even get to log into FFXIV.

I'm unsure if FFXIV will use any other browser.. I have FireFox set as my default browser and XIV still uses IE for its login window.

Well I'm not really sure what happened. I tried one last time to update Catalyst and then my computer blue-screened and said there was some type of error and shut itself off. I left the house a couple of hours and came back and XIV loaded just fine and started updating. Didn't do anything different.

I made a character and played a while to see if there would be any more problems since some people said it didn't stop once the game actually loaded. Now my computer has started locking up randomly while I play. Sometimes it can be a few minutes and at the longest it was probably an hour and a half. I feel like this is probably a hardware problem of some sort.

When I first got this laptop I had to send it back in at Best Buy three times over something like this. There was a malfunction with the fan and it was overheating. They finally got it right after the third time but now I'm having this problem again, for the first time in about six months. Not really sure what it would be. Tried turning down the graphics and playing in windowed mode but it still locks up. Curious to know if anyone else has had this problem or if it is just something wrong with my computer.

And thank you again Val for all of your help and suggestions!

This game will make any laptop really hot so it needs to be cooled properly. I would recommend looking at your GPU and CPU temps while you play and report back. I seem to vaguely remember someone else having issues of playing the game and then it randomly crashing after a certain period of time, but i cant remember if they found a solution.

Hate to break this to you but sound very much like the probliem/S i was having, well without going into to much detail as theres ALOT of it & i'd have to walk you through 5 windows reinstalls & 29 other steps i'll just make this short.
Test your ram, error cheak & repair hard drive if its none of those you need a new motherboard &/or hard drive

as i said short version missing alot of steps & to much eplaining on how & why i know this.

i will point out in short:
* never showed any ram nor hard drive probliems in the tests
* Could not get probliems on hd video settings trying to replicate bsod instances
* Tryed all the recommended fixes on google none worked
* No probliems with ram coming to this conclusion as i ran 6 pairs different sticks at different speed.
* Its not driver compatibilty as we tryed factory/windows/specailty drivers + driver updaters/tester & windows registry cleaners/updaters/testers.
* not virus related de to many anti virus programmes run when computer doctor were cheaking it for errors
* Its not graphics card as it was not even a hour old when probliems started.
* It was not windows as 5 reinstalls with different trys of with & without windows drivers.
* Tryed on another pc with same stuff no probliems Bar a filter driver for usb for the gamepad
* Rebuilt pc with new motherboard & hard driver probliem fixed.

You should try not to speak in absolutes. Would have been better to have added a "may" somewhere in there.

I had a cooling pad but thought I had left it at a friends house. Turned out it was in the trunk of my car. Haven't had any problems with my laptop locking up since then running on high settings. Everything's been going well. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and help. Glad I can finally just enjoy the game!

I wonder if the OP is using the Republic of Gamers Laptop from Asus. When FFXIV first came out, my friend got a laptop with that very same card and had problems even running the benchmark. He got BSOD etc. There is def something wrong with the driver of that ATI card. On all 3 of my PCs, I never had a problem running FFXIV. I remember being really confused when he was having all those issues just to run the benchmark. It was very frustrating lol.

lol Yeah I do have one of those. Got one because my friend had gotten one of theirs like half a year before me and never had any trouble with it. Ran everything great. I got this newer model and had all kinds of problems. Never had anything cause me so much frustration I don't think.

I was having this problem for a while also, honestly not sure how I fixed it, I am almost positive it had something to do with the Catalyst Control Center though.... (I was doing this in September 2011 when the game first came out, and I haven't changed any settings since fixing it).

One thing you might want to check is the Window size in the FFXIV - config. I know if you switch between HDMI and back to PC you have to change this setting or you will get the DirectX crash.

Yea well, if whatyouarethinking can give you tips on what he used, you should have it sorted out. I got the latest g74sx and they rock the Nvidia ones. I didnt even have a single issue. I think he meant september 2010 though lol. If i remember correctly, the driver that was current when ffxiv launched wasn't good. The one before it was supposed to be ok. I remember hoping the latest asus wouldn have ATI. I don't have anything against ATI b/c my PC i built for ffxiv is ATI. I think its just that specific mobile card. (Well, the drivers anyway) Ask around and see who uses that card and find out what catalyst they're on. Hope you have it sorted out soon! :)
