I just started playing it for the first time about a month ago. I am enjoying it thus far. It isn't as good as FFXI but it is still pretty enjoyable in my opinion and I think that, just as FFXI improved over time, this game can too. They are planning to implement server merges to increase the population per server, but even with a low population, I've only had one night where I was unable to get a pt for xp. Personally, i like the game.

You're in the minority or only talking about level 40+ content. I went for six weeks after 1.20 hit without a single invite or response to request to group up. A new player in FFXIV right now will spend the majority of their pre-level 30 time solo grinding leves, so it's incredibly misleading to talk about exp parties as if they are the norm.

Yea i used to play for a good 2 months on release and I really like pt experiences as you can do many things together but thats just me on the FFXI experience since it was so much into parties, but i am happy that they are trying to improve the game, and i might give it a shot again, do any of you know if they stopped the free trial? if yes or no it doesnt matter since i might come back to it anyways lol

If you're looking for a nice, steady party-style leveling experience, this may not be the best time to join.

The problem is one of content. There's some end-game content in FFXIV right now, sure, but the part that comes before end-game, you might want to call it, "the game," is still lacking. And it's unlikely it's going to change much, because all the things that would make "the game," interesting are being put into 2.0 version of FFXIV which you won't see until sometime next year.

Up until recently, in fact, people got powerleveled in droves where basically two people did all the work (a high level player who mass killed, and a lackey who'd invite/drop the high level player) and everyone else would AFK for the hours this took while collecting all the XP until they hit the 40s. That's how exciting "the game" is right now. It's just something you skip over because there's nothing to see.

So, if you want leveling to be the meaningful experience you seem to desire, I think you would be disappointed if you started now. Wait to see what they have in store for 2.0 before taking the plunge and save yourself some money (and frustration).

I'm on Selbina, and it's really not that hard to get an xp party 20+. At all. All I can tell you is how it's been for me. The only time I don't shout for a party is during those lag times when EU pop is going offline for the night and NA pop still isn't on.

Selbina has been the exception to the rule during NA evening hours, especially the last couple of months. When I did NA roll calls the last 2 weeks prior to the commencement of billing, 17 of the 18 servers had populations around 350-450 with Selbina being the only one going above 750 at that time.

Now several weeks after billing started and with FFXIII-2, a good portion of those servers have dropped somewhere between 100-200 (at least from the several population roll calls on the official forums). Selbina is the only server going 400+ on most evenings whether weekday or weekend. Most people here on ZAM already have known for some time that Selbina is the only one left "moderately" populated for NA times. Obviously new players or recently returning players would not know. Joining any of the other 17 servers (unless you know someone there) will most likely translate into soloing level 1-40 most of the time.

Personally I would wait till the server merge happens which most likely won't happen till the middle or the end of March or wait until Version 2.0 is released. Patch 1.21 is currently looking at the end of February release (assuming no further delays). Quoting from the last letter:

"We’re planning to allow for an adequate amount of time between when we release the information regarding the server merging and when we actually carry it out. Patch 1.21 is a much higher priority, so the merging won’t happen until sometime after it goes live."

All that being said I'm enjoying my time in the game right now even with the lack of grouping in the early levels. You just have to know this going in and be prepared for it. If you go in thinking you'll solo to 10, then head off to some FFXIV Valkurm equivalent zone and enjoy group-based exp grinds for the next 40 levels you're going to become extremely frustrated and disappointed.

That's not to say there's no group exp grinds in this game, far from it, they just don't begin at 10 right now. I read somewhere on here that if you had to compare levels from FFXI that 1-10 in 11 is similar to 1-30 in FFXIV and honestly there's a lot of truth to that - it might change with the merges coming up possibly next month, but you most likely won't see any group-based activity until your 30s. It's certainly possible to group up as soon as 10, most people just don't for whatever reason. I'd like to see that changed.

But as someone who came from FFXI, spent many years in WoW and have been part of both LOTRO, Rift and most recently SW:TOR, I have to say I'm enjoying FFXIV right now far more than any game I've played since FFXI. The WoW type MMORPG formula just isn't something I enjoy, and this game right now is as close to FFXI MMO experience as you'll get. This isn't FFXI-2, and it won't ever be so don't be expecting that, but it's also not World of Warcraft or any variation of that game.

I dropped my SW:TOR subscription for this game and purchased a 180-day account for ~$40, which is just extremely cheap. I don't regret it one bit.

six weeks?! wow!

i have a feeling though that throughout the year more people will be willing to give this game another chance.

i'm wondering about the 'right' time to rejoin too. and i have a feeling it will be perfect to join just prior to the 2.0 upgrade. the game would have been talked up by then, people will be interested and old users will return to check it out to compare the changes made since they left.

i dont know what im going to do though, i might try rift for a few months, but my heart just wont be in it because it looks just like WoW and honestly, i was never big on it.

there's guild wars 2 which looks great and also the secret world, but i dont know know if that will deliver. heck, even family guy online looks kinda fun.

i want be patient and wait for the 2.0 update, but i know i wont and ill start a few months before it.

Linkshell parties are the way to go...my problem is nobody wants to help me with quest related tasks(Chocobo Quest) I'd love to up my rank in the Flames but it's a mandatory grouping scenario and everyone is usually too busy, I did get help eventually but forgot to speak to the moogle and guess what? I get to do it again....My fault really for not fully reading..but I digress..

While i just got back yesterday after leaving the game at release, i'm impressed. I'm on Selbina, so population wise, i can't tell about others servers but if you're about to start again, create a character on Selbina. I see a load of shouts in Ul'Dah for parties (not in my range level tho), but you dont really need a full party at lower levels. I played with a friend yesterday and we got to level 11 in about 5-6 hours. I'm seeing myself achieving 20 kindda fast while grouped with 1 or 2 people. Anyway, yesterday wasn't a letdown that's for sure, i really enjoyed my time. I got some random invite to a linkshell too, anyway, if you're starting playing again, PM me, maybe we can do some stuff together and with LS/friends.

I just want to thank the returning and new players for their feedback on the current state of the game. Some of us oldtimers forget what it is like to be new and have also just adapted to some of the games shortcomings.

I did.. Still no parties but it's getting better... Severly lacking sense of community. Everyone that has stayed formed a bond so you will feel like an outsider even in a linkshell... It's enjoyable and getting better. I got my Gobbue Mount!
