So I started playing XIV when it launched but dropped off in the early 20 levels because everything looked so similar. I've been looking up a lot of info of what they've been redoing and it's insane the amount of changes they're making - I'm looking forward to it. But I'm to understand that once the 7th Umbral Era (v2) goes live, which I read to be somewhere near the end of the year, the old story is going to be no longer accessible? I don't want to miss out on it but I don't want to trudge to 50 in the same environments if it's not worth it.

TL;DR:
Is the current story worth playing the game?

I like the gridania side the best you get some extra scenes when doing it. For me it's always worth it you learn about the game. I keep seeing the moon get bigger and redder every month. Besides, since you can't ever see all this again, idk, imho it's great to just get as much as you can done to say "i was there" :)

Sorta like XI when we could say "It took forever to get 50 and mobs waited for you at the zones" :)

Like Final Fantasy XI, the game specs will be extremely high for the time, but in about 5 years, an average machine can run it on max settings with little to no issues. Tanaka also expressed interest in making a benchmark program available.

Most of the story missions/quest will still be around after 2.0. The stuff that won't be available will be the quest or events that are related to the apocalypse storyline. There have been some small in-game events already to hint at what will be happening when the apocalypse arrives (sometime this summer if they can stick to their timeline). If you are that interested in the story you could always find videos on youtube or other sites of the cutscenes.

Aye, thank you guys for the replies. I started my character in Ul'duh and I was getting pretty into it - it just took so much monotony to get to the next levels for the next quest. But I hear so much has changed so I might hop back in for 1.21 to try and see everything before it goes away. I was thinking about just youtubing all the story elements but I don't think it'd hold the same weight without playing it. And I think the changes would be way more impacting if I had more experience pre-V2 to compare it to.

I was just really trying to see everyone's opinion on the quality of the story in the game. I never got as far as I wanted in XI but I loved the story I was able to see.

Yeah, what "events" and "story elements" are unique to pre-2.0 are, not at all surprisingly, sparse. In a way, that's a good thing: SE would be stupid to use any significant amount of resources - be those in the form of writing, cutscenes, unique monsters, equipment, &c. - making things that will supposedly be forever deleted in around ten months.

You want to experience the pre-2.0 content? Look up a handful of cryptic NPC dialog on the wiki, because that's basically all it is, heh.

Haha, see, that was kind of my fear. But I think they're trying to lead the story into the next era of V2 instead of just leaving the story where it is and then redoing everything once V2 hits. I think it'd be nice to go through that progression of an evolution but I didn't know if the story was good enough (so far) to be worth the time. I'd be sad if I rushed through the pre-V2 story just to have it be meh. No opinions on how good the story itself is?
