First: Mods/Admins
Let me know if this oversteps anything. :)

Secondly:
Would you use a android app, website or application to chat with final fantasy as a global server. Stay in touch with LS mates while on the road? :)

I ask because my beta is opening soon for that and I need to know what the interest is on it ^^

Much obliged!

Like Final Fantasy XI, the game specs will be extremely high for the time, but in about 5 years, an average machine can run it on max settings with little to no issues. Tanaka also expressed interest in making a benchmark program available.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt of having the best of intentions with this. But these would be my concerns:

1. Beta is usually the last phase of pre-release software. It seems unlikely you're that ready if you haven't even chosen a platform for your client yet.

2. If this works as advertised, i.e. chatting from your phone or a webpage directly into a FFXIV server linkshell, there's a tremendous likelihood SE will shut you down, not the least of which because of:

3. This seems like a ploy to harvest account usernames and passwords (which would be needed to communicate to the in-game linkshell) which can then lead to the hijacking of said accounts (whether or not that is the actual intention).

The internet already provides plenty of options for people to stay in touch outside the game without the need to give up their sensitive information and either risk losing their character and/or in-game possessions to the whims of a third party or risk getting the banhammer from SE for using an unauthorized client. I'd be too suspicious to ever use something like this.

I don't use your game un/pw it's the same as running parsemod or anything else like msn ^^ You have to have a un/pw on my site and get a beta key for the desktop server/client.

Beta is right, alpha has been out there for quite some time ^^

Platform: web, desktop, android ^.~

I also rated you up because your concerns are valid as well :)

Well, then I apologize for misunderstanding the beta part and what information gets used. I meant no disrespect, but you have to be careful.

So, if I got this right, you're just running a parser on the chat log while you're logged in to FFXIV (and presumably AFK) and forwarding that to your server over the internet?

It's quite not as bad as I imagined.

It's something that SE themselves should think about supporting. But - we will see.

Well with Yoshi-P claiming that user developed add-ons will be allowed to function with the game post 2.0 I'm sure there will be a revision to the current user agreement with regards to third party programs. I just don't have a timeline for when we will all have to accept the new user agreement.

It will be interesting to see the changes to the agreement.

Yup. Run desktop server while in-game. Server sends chat to websocket with api key. Only those logged in with that api key can see chat. You send some chat from the app to the server. It matches the key, sends it to the desktop app which put's it in game for you :) I will be limiting it to say/shout/tell/linkshell/emotes and /shutdown-(game/server/both)

It's an interesting idea for sure. It will be interesting to see if SE allows this in the long run or not. I'm not giving any admin stamp of approval here, this is my opinion as a fellow coder only. Since you aren't linking to any external programs I can't see how this violates any of our rules Smiley: wink

What would be cool is to somehow link this up with an IRC channel, our LS uses IRC almost exclusively as our chat client, even when we're in game it seems we're speaking in IRC more often than not.

Working on making it irc as well so you can just connect to my irc server and it's all integrated :P or it can connect to yours as a user and post messages ^.~

In either case I've taken that sample server offline for now, upgrading for un/key's so your chat is private.

Ok :) Staging site is setup for chat. I'll be converting this staging site into production in a week or less. Android app is getting final touches, looking for someone who knows xcode/cocoa for the iphone version.

Windows application to serve your chat to the website is functioning and after some code tweaks for reconnecting if the site goes down will be released as well :)

I invite anyone to test the site if you want.

http://stage.ffxiv-app.com/chat

You can register with a username/email and a password will be sent to you that's random, later a profile page will be setup to change that.

For the first while I'll be honest I'll be setting up the site so that you can chat with your game for free. After I see what type of network load/demand there is I may have to charge a small subscription fee/month to help offset the costs but I'll see :)

Commands in the chat window:
/pm username message

/users

/game /chatmode message (/game /tell boo boo hey wassup~!)
Supported: /l, /p, /s, /sh, /t first last, /em message
Coming: dice roll and just plain emotes

Clicking a name let puts the whisper command already in the chat box at bottom. G-mail style interface is incoming as well for both android and website :)

Thanks!

PS: Since you can see the source of my website anyway, it connects to http://ffxiv-app.com:4000/

If the port is blocked or it doesn't say "you have joined the channel" let me know and I'll look into alternate means to serve it over port 80.

Planned: IRC integration, avatar style chat and who knows what else. Open to suggestions~!

Just a side note, the /game will not work until I release the server app. It also is locked down by username so you start it with your site name on you PC and only if your logged in using your username on the website will it work.

Messages you may see on site:
PC server time message (this means it's being broadcast from someones PC, their username is not shown)
Serve message, message from server
Web message, message from a web user
Phone message, message from someone using phone

Known issues:
You can login more than once from web/phone.
Flooding/Spam, working on method to prevent web/phone users from spamming too many messages

ChatMod is live, http://ffxiv-app.com/products/ :) You just need to register for site with any username/email you want, as long as email is real (use gmail/whatever).

Consider this public beta for web/desktop version, android finishing closed testing now :)
