This is just another instance that proves once again, despite all the current issues with the game, dev->player communication is not one of them :-) I'm glad they chose this compromise.

Personally I liked the previous names better.

Not that I really give a **** about what my server's name is though!

Balmung?

I'm sure that has some impressive meaning I'm not familiar with, but ... Balmung?

Pretty sure it was a sword in XI. Means probably other FFs as well. Sounds like dung to me so that's a little odd.

(in the Nibelungenlied) a sword seized from the Nibelungs by Siegfried.

Duh! You know, Siegfried, right? As in the Nebelungenlied Siegfried! And the Nebelungs, remember those guys? Man, they knew how to throw a party!

On another note, I like how Selbina is being merged with... nothing... yet becomes Ridill all the same; and how European players are advised to play on Ragnarok, the apocalyptic end of the world.

Siegfried (yeah the guy from Soul Calibur is based on him) is a character who's father very much mirrors the story of King Arthur. He was a great warrior who, defeated Fenrir, weilded Balmung (think the Soul Blade).

This blade (also has ties to the Nasril in Lord of the Rings) having been destroyed by Odin while being wielded by Sigmund (Siegried's father), only for Sigmund to die. And MANY other historical references relating to European sword use. While, it's namesake is mostly unknown, it's reputation is either well known or well respected, and mythically holds more of a significance, or even may be considered to be the original name of Excalibur.

Balmung is also known as Gram (Gram is actually the name of the sword before it was reforged).

Hum...Lindblum becomes Sargatanas. I guess that's a plus, going from a city in FFIX to a double bladed sword usable by Zidane from the same game.

Elezen: Choose Midlander, which server will you go to?
Midlander: -_-
Midlander: *_*
Midlander: O_O
Elezen: Ah, look who's back from his revere.
Mi'qote: So nice of you to join us again.
Elezen: Well? Don't keep us in suspense!
Midlander: This server. I choose this server!

Or... you could just let the process automatically move you to the server on the right.

I kind of wish they'd merge more of the worlds together. Ghysal only had maybe 500-ish people online yesterday during the day, and only 200 of those were Disciples of War/Magic. Merging will only push those numbers to maybe 1k online, with still less than 500 DoW/M. Is that enough to really make much of a difference?

By comparison, my server on FFXI usually has 1.3k to 2k people logged in at any given time.

How many of those are actively playing though as well? When I was on bahamut we had 2300 online, 140 of which were level 75. 40 total LFG ^^;

I have to wait and see how it will be when karnak/pal/bod become excalibur but if we get the right group of people online with the right levels shouldn't be too hard. In any case more people is better :D

The problem with merging more than 2 servers together is going to be the lag. Even when things were fluctuating around 1000-1500, the server just couldn't handle it. To make things worse, a year and them some later, EVERYONE'S in Ul'Dah. So until they get these new servers up for 2.0, I don't think much can be done other than have 800-1000 people online on some servers and hope for the best.

Very true, didn't think about that.

I spent several hours in FFXI today and ran into people everywhere I went. In FFXIV the day before, I barely even saw anyone at Camp Horizon. Granted that's more of a lower-level camp, but it's still concerning to see so few people at crafting/leve/behest hubs.

It may be more of an image issue than anything else; 18 to 10 sounds off less of an alarm than 18 to 5. ****, that might even be the reason they went with 10 and not 9, get that extra digit.

Or they may be expecting people to come back. I will admit, for the first time since the beta I am hearing more people coming than going...

Don't get me wrong, I am not expecting some incredible flood of people suddenly deciding 14 is the next big thing. But, I do think SE has finally started to show signs that they hit bottom ~1.20 (and in many ways I think them instituting the payment process helped them with that... In a good way). But it will take some time before it will be clear that they are on a recovery. And even if they do successfully recover, that doesn't mean it will be successful. It just means it is not the incredible bomb they dropped when they first released it.

I see the 2-1 merge as a way of keeping a little hope for them more than us in giving room for people to come back to the game. And as we go through the next three patches, we will hopefully see the design and concepts get flushed out. And Hopefully it will be something playable (I say this since there really are not any games out I actually want to play...)
