New Jobs Invigorate FFXIV Follow

#1 Mar 11 2012 at 11:45 PM Rating: Excellent
Hey all,

My latest editorial is on the new job system, which many of us spent hours toying around with over the weekend.

The initial class system left lots to be desired... but rather than scrap the class system, the development team found a way to keep the classes while still adding jobs. And, the two systems actually fit hand in hand together! I was very pleased with what I saw over the weekend, as were many others in my linkshells who were happily hunting their AF gear. Seeing the quality of these job quests really makes me excited for Version 2.0.

Check out my editorial here.

To any of you who spent a significant amount of time trying out the new jobs this weekend, what did you think about the quests? Did you have a chance to test out your new jobs in any meaningful battles? What are your impressions?

Discuss!

Thanks for the great write up. I really wish I could be playing right now.

This makes me hunger for 2.0 and the PS3 release even more.

I resubscribed over the weekend (expecting little, but keeping an open mind) and was actually having a pretty good time. I had a lot to catch up on with the grand company quests to get my chocobo and then unlocking blm, and enjoyed myself for the most part. My thm was only 27 when I stopped playing so I got to do some leves with the new combo system and the reworked abilities setup, and found some people to go through the initial blm quest with.

I'm a lot more hopeful for this game post-2.0 than I was before this weekend, that's for sure.

It's actually amazing to see the game so alive. This weekend the game was packed with people searching for groups, moving around the world and just being part of the game - here's hoping it's not just a short-lived phase because of the patch.

This is what FFXIV needs building up to 2.0 - sustained player population and participation.

As a whole I think the additions of traditional jobs really invoked a great amount of interest from players, the UI and combat mechanics are finally settling into place, and the loose ends are getting addressed such as the addition/completion of food/medicine.

There's still a few glaring issues with the overal game economy/market that are a result of the top-heaviness of the current game and the resulting impact of that on crafting goods and progression, as well as the trickle effect we're seeing with endgame content and how that creates waves of player participation and a general feeling of a lack of content and things to do once you ding 50. As well as a few minor annoyances to be worked out: Targeting is a major pain, especially as the number of participants increases and the game still really doesn't begin until the 30s, if not mid-30s in terms of group-based play so often new players are left to their own whim to grind out 1-30 and just 20 short levels thereafter to enjoy the full benefits of group experience.

I don't know what we'll see in 1.22 and 1.23 aside from the content mentioned in the 2.0 roadmap, but at this point I'm starting to get very curious as to FFXIV's plans for player integration into 2.0. With the emphasis on endgame play content that 1.22 and 1.23 have, I'm beginning to doubt we'll see a level cap increase with 2.0 unless they've created these battles with the ability to adjust their levels accordingly, as it's not likely they'd invest all this time into content now with the intent of rendering it null with the next patch.

But if 2.0 comes and goes with nary but a polish and shine on everything, I'm not sure how effective that'll be at providing staying power for the current players. It doesn't matter what kind of engine drives it or streamlined world map exists, if levels 1-49 are merely a weekend roadbump to a levelcap gear-grind, and the majority of players have already grinded out that gear and content, 2.0 adoption won't be much of a success in my opinion.

I have completed WHM and PLD over the weekend, and while, I have done a few things as a completed WHM (not my best skill by a long shot), I found the job was back in line with what a healer should be. You have your debuff removal, you have emergency sleep, cures that match the party without getting deaded from casting a single cure, or simply spam curing 100% of the fight, and hoping your MP held out.

The addition of not being able to cast while moving, with people still learning positioning, and me still learning safe movements and locations made the fights much more of a challenge.

Pld is incredible. I never unlocked the job in 11, so playing Gladiator as a main job in 14 has been a blast. But, now, as paladin, we have abilities that, under normal fighting conditions we no longer need a healer for the tank, and a healer for the party. While Divine Veil needs to last more then 20 seconds (1 min, to 1 1/2 mins would be much better, or the recast time at 40 seconds... either way, so it can be effective). I haven't had a chance to use Cover yet, so It will be interesting to work that into a pt situation. And Hallowed Ground (Invincible), while only 15 minutes is INCREDIBLE. Trigger Tempered Will, followed by Hallowed Ground, and for 15 seconds you just deal with what you have. Definitely can be a life saver, however, for the short duration, it should add magic resistance.

Hey~! :D

Imaging your kitty like this:

I just finished. Monk is going to wait since it's not 50 pew pew :(

This update was really exciting, haven't seen so many people on in a longtime.

Edit:

I also wanted to add that I think it was a great move on how they did the chest's here. In XI when you had 8 people wanting chest AF, it took along time to camp each coffer for everyone. Solo AF questing is about the same time-frame between the two. Getting some final pieces in XIV is the more time consuming part as you need 8 level 50's to complete them ^^

Really fun stuff.

Like Final Fantasy XI, the game specs will be extremely high for the time, but in about 5 years, an average machine can run it on max settings with little to no issues. Tanaka also expressed interest in making a benchmark program available.

Believe me I do! I just can't start until after I'm getting sleep through out the night and until my husband is done with his studies, which should all coincide with 2.o launch. I'm excited and he is willing to give it another shot at 2.o based on what I've told him :D There will be so much to get done when we join up again :D. I am just keeping fingers crossed that 2.o won't be a let down :( Really :(

Also in regards to many people being online, I have noticed the vistor count on Zam going up as well...Hoping that is a sign of things to come :D

There is no doubt in my mind at all that 2.0 will bring FFXIV to the list of the top 5 MMOs of all time. All these changes since creation have been making the game way better than it was during Beta/Release. I have to admit that I stopped playing after the Beta but I still have my Standard/Collector's unopened on my book shelf awaiting 2.0's release.

I have watched the youtube videos of all the new changes and it's simply amazing how much this game has transformed. I feel that I could play the game now as it is but I also feel that, if I am going to start playing this game at some point I want to do it properly when everything they envisioned on a finished product has been added in for 2.0.

I know a lot of friends of mine who are World of Warcraft diehards and I showed them the video linked to the front page news article and they are quite amazed. The combat graphics, the equipment; so much potential and the game is gorgeous.

2.0 will rock the World. Mark my words. Thank you to all those who currently play/suggest ideas, the ZAM staff for keeping everyone updated on the progress of the amazing transformation leading into 2.0 and foremost, thank you Square Enix; you've brought Final Fantasy back better than ever and you will have more subscribers than ever.

Cannot wait until the end of this year/beginning of next!

In the top 5 MMOs with an epic fail launch? It may even be #1.

In the top 5 MMOs making a miraculous recovery? Quite possibly.

But in the top 5 MMOs ever? Care to make it interesting? Smiley: sly

I mean, you already have games like WoW, Lineage 1 & 2, Rift, SW:TOR, and even FFXI on subscriptions alone. But then there's the historical importance of UO and EQ (and probably WoW again) for paving the way for the rest of the genre to consider.

FFXIV doesn't strike me as making any headway in offering innovative MMO content (what does it do that other MMOs haven't before?) or even being particularly popular from a subscription point of view. All it has going for it is being a Final Fantasy Online game for FF fans to hang out in just as soon as they work out the laundry list of kinks and beg for their players' forgiveness (some more).

Except they might announce a Fallout MMO instead, since they just got the right back from Interplay.

Zeso, it depends on which job you are looking to unlock. The main class that is the most similar (e.g. Thaumaturge=>BLM or Gladiator=>Paladin) must be level 30 and the "sub" class must be level 15. Here's a link for that lists the class and level requirements for all the new jobs. I hope this helps!
