I have played many games. From FFXI (My first and be in my heart for ever) to the latest SWtoR. some I like some i hated.

So Far I like FFXIV and I going to keep playing the game. But the community seems dead or closed off. never any chatter. Playing for 3 weeks and no LS. (That can be because of the server merges coming up)

It the community aspect of a MMO is the main reason I play them. I play games like Skyrim. ME to get my by myself time.

Has anyone else have notice that and if so do you think it will change after the server merges?

This will likely not even have a possibility of change until 2.0. The chat system is so limited as to be laughable, and the battle-hardened people who remain are so firmly entrenched in their ls's that I don't see it changing until 2.0's chat system improvements. FFXIV was never a chatty game.

It all depends what server your on. If you are on a low populated server then that may be the reason. The merge tomorrow should fix that.

This has been a complaint of this game since day one, **** beta. I think it goes back to the 50 character limit the game used to have for chat. Its funny that it still carries on today.

I play on Selbina and people always chatting and helping each other out. I was even in Limsa crafting the other day and some guy shouted "if anyone needs any help with anything don't hesitate to ask" and a minute later he was making me a pair of crackows for my crafting class. In low pop servers obviously this might not be the case but in general you have to build a culture like that if it doesn't hit you in the face. Someone the other day on the main forums was saying "no chance getting a LS in this game", he recently came back. I recently came back and have 3 LS already by helping ppl out, making chit chat and making friends. So that "FFXI" culture is there, even in the "battle heartened" Smiley: rolleyes LSs.

It's not about chatting, it's about chatting while in a party or whilst crafting. The crafting thing they are fixing soon wiht the elimination of the crafting timer, the chatting while in a party is something I don't think they can fix.

You were on one of the three lowest populated servers. Hopefully it will be better for you on Excalibur. Good luck!

I played FFXI way back when it first came out, played for about 2 or 3 years. Will be buying XIV when it 2.0 arrives and it is available for ps3. Anyone know of a website or forum that is a friend finder of some sort, where players from XI that now play XIV can reunite? It would be awesome to play with some of the people that were in my LS or server from XI.

I'd love to be able to find some of the people I played with years ago, but I haven't had any luck relocating them. Then again, it has been 8 years now since I've played and 6~ years since I've talked to any of them. We were on Ramuh back in the day if anyone remembers Smurfieu, Vermillion, Wintieu, or Kaita. There were dozens more, but those are the guys I remember playing with the most. I think several of them continued to play for a while when I left for WoW. Biggest gaming mistake ever. I wish I had stuck to FFXI, as I followed the game loosely over the years and really loved where it went.

Yes indeed! FFXI was my first MMORPG and I fell in love with it, amazing game and people (on my server anyways). If I had the time and knowledge I would attempt to make a site dedicated to it, but I have neither as of now Smiley: frown I think a forum would be too messy, it would be hard to find people soooo blaah

The community in FFXI was simply awesome, on the server i was on at least.
I'm afraid we will never see such a community again now that the players simply demand that you must be able to solo everything, and content must be easy and fast to get through in every new modern MMORPG. Modern MMORPG plays like a single player RPG with an integrated chatbox and some co-op possibilities along the way.

The slow progressing speed of FFXI and the "party for everything" nature of the game really offered the players a chance to meet and get to know other people. It was not uncommon to bump into the same people frequently.

Social aspects of an MMORPG are now replaced by solo questing, LFG tools and NPC "companions". It is all about speed, efficiency and convenience, social aspects are now longer important enough.
This development completely destroyed the sense of any in game community. You just have to look at WoW. In game community sunk to an all time rock bottom low that Blizzard is forced to adjust the looting routine that worked for ages in other MMORPG's to something artificial "behind the scenes secrecy system" in the upcoming MoP expansion to try to make up for a completely lack of an in game community and all the drama and whining that comes with it.

I'm looking for an in game community as good as the one in FFXI in other MMORPG's since the first day i quit FFXI and yet i have not found anything that comes even remotely close to it.

FFXIV community is not that bad (on my server) compared with WoW or Rift but it isn't great either.
There are somethings going on sometimes but most players seem to try very hard to keep everything within the LS they happen to be in. Low level grouping is hit or miss. Sometimes parties are formed within minutes and the next time absolutely nothing happens for 6 hours straight.
