I used to play ffxi all the time, and I am thinking of getting back in. However, I want to know more about ffxiv before i decide which one I would like to play. Can someone give me a link of how the 2 games compare, or tell me pros and cons of each game? Thank you, and sorry for the dumb question.

Pros:
-FFXI required you to look up the majority of things outside of the game. FFXIV has a Journal in which you know the relative location of where to go for quests and scenario-based things. Straightforward.

-Game gets considerably better each patch, but it depends on what you liked from FFXI. Can you try and tell me what you liked from that game?

Cons:
-Poor UI that will have you wondering why they didn't expand on things from FFXI and start from scratch. It's not as pronounced as it used to be, but some of it needs work.

-Targeting is still very wonky.

-Zones are repetitive. This issue will be addressed in a few patches, though.

As you might be able to see from reading the posts on these forums, opinion is most definitely split on those that think the game is playable as it is and those that don't. The forum gets a large amount of people asking this same question and it often ends in a heated discussion. I still think the best advice is to try the game (It's cheap to buy) and give it a month. If by the end of that time your realise you don't fancy logging in then this isn't the game for you. To be advised by anyone to play/not to play based on a personal opinion tends to be very superficial because everyone is different and of course its just one perspective.

Loved partying with people, and how each person had their role. Loved how many different jobs their were. Loved the crafting part.

FFXIV:

Pros:
_More accessibility in general and getting improved on this part every patch
_Better graphics
_Graphic direction, depends on person asked
_Exclusive content pre-2.0, making it a more dynamic sort of world
_Better, more engaging crafting, getting improved every patch and will speed up significantly at 2.0 with promised crafter/gatherer only contents

Cons:
_Lack of content, updated with every patch
_Lesser players per server, hopefully improved a lot after yesterday merge
_Very poor UI, getting improved each patch and hopefully vastly improved at 2.0 when new server architecture comes in place
_Zones, read above
_Graphic direction, depends on person asked
_Graphic engine badly unoptimised, promised to improve vastly at 2.0

FFXI: I only played very little

Pros:
_Lots more content
_Getting a lot more accessibility now compared to before, still not enough accessibility as FFXIV currently is or going to be (read quest journal from above, or Solo-ability/Casual friendliness)
_Arguably better UI/Graphic Engine (because it's very old now :O )
_Graphic direction, depends on person asked
_More established player base
_Better role/grouping mechanic?
_Moghouse?

Cons:
_Outdated graphics
_Relatively static now that it is already aged, depends on people asked
_Graphic direction, depends on person asked
_UI that is better to old players, but is horrendous to new players, and little commitment to improve
_Outdated and uninvolved crafting

So soon, FFXIV will be a no brainer in your opinion?

Thing I noticed about Final Fantasy XI at its current stage is that the developers are running out of stuff to do for it. I've been keeping up with their patch notes and noticed that they're making level 99 versions of the same thing they had for level 75 players. If you like going out and gear collecting and killing that next NM for that next piece of shiny, then that seems to be what the game has now boiled down to, (Which there is nothing wrong with that, but just not my personal preference.)

With FFXIV, they seem to be going all-out on trying to make this an enjoyable game from the mess that was released almost two years ago. We're all divided here on whether the game is currently up-to-standard or not. (And there are still some gripes I have that have been un-addressed such as linkshell management tools and Paladin being unbalanced) but most of us here can probably agree that XIV has been getting way more attention in terms of updates than XI has in the past 3-5 years or so.
