With the reintroduction of jobs and how wowed I was by all the neat tricks Dragoons can do I'm considering coming back to the game. However, there's some things I must know about. I only played for an extremely short time after being overwhelmed by a friend powerleveling me to fast that I couldn't keep up with the spells or experiment with them. Last I played was August last year.

Anyway are the controls bearable now? Like does control similarly to WoW or am I better off playing it like FFXI, using a PS3 controller?
How's leveling now? I'm so used to leveling in parties and such in FFXI I don't know if I should solo most stuff or party with people?
Any Linkshells/Guilds whatever they're called in this game feel like picking me up to show me the ropes? Eventually I want to do endgame stuff raiding/dungeons/Relic/Mythic/Emp/Legendary/Whatever.

Hey Mordak:

I have to say, as a long time Final Fantasy fan (c'mon who wasn't moved when Rydia came back and saved your whole party?!), I was INCREDIBLY disappointed with FF XIV. During beta the original guy in charge of development basically told everyone to shut up unless the feedback had to do with bugs - no other feedback was apparently necessary on the crappy game. I purchased the game, played for a few weeks, and left. This last July I had a Gamestop certificate I needed to spend and saw a collectors edition of FFXIV there for $19.99!!!! I purchased it because I'd long since thrown out my old game and gave it a whirl. Again, I wasn't really able to get into the game.

Last week I logged back on to the game - which has had several major updates since July - and I've thoroughly enjoyed playing. They have a made a LOT of changes including: the implementation of the new classes, exp chains, chocobos, grand companies, changes to quest lines, doing away with fatigue, changes in how exp and skills are obtained, and dungeons. They also recently consolidated servers making the populations on the remaining realms much higher. I've really enjoyed my quest lines and grouping with friendly players - many I've found are also recent returnees.

The one thing I will say is it can still take awhile to find a group for an exp party. They also still need to do something about the retainer/market ward system and crafting.

How about the controls now and menu navigation?

I use KB/Mouse and it's definitely not as responsive as WoW, Rift, SWTOR, etc. However, as the game action tends to move at a slower pace anyway it's not too horrid of a detriment. Menus are alright, but they still could use some work - particularly the search, party, and gear/inventory menus (why the heck are these separate?!).

FFXIV wants you back. Its only like $10 a month to take part in the retail/beta thing they have going on!

That is my one concern there. I just hope it has improved since I last played. I'm willing to give it a shot, just need some people to help show me the ropes so I can get up to speed.

In terms of responsiveness of menu, it's improved a lot but it still sucks when you're buying/selling from NPCs and when crafting bu a lot of stuff was smoothed out and in the case of crafting it was streamlined a little so not as many clicks necessary (you can choose recipes from a list now instead of one item at a time from inventory). ALL the UI is changing at the end of this year when 2.0 kicks in (plus I'm sure other changes/additions in the pipeline) however its very much bearable now and my decision to come back last month was a great one, I'm having a good time with the game.

Well, then I just need to find a good LS with my similar goals on a good server. Also, I've been having trouble finding up to date info about the game. Wanting to know what classes I need to level to unlock the classic jobs like DRG.
