Mouse? Keyboard? How do you play?Follow

I know this must seem like a really odd question but where are your hands while you play XIV? :p

I've been away since release, but after hearing about some great updates, made my way back last night. I'm liking the new FFXIV but can't quite seem to find a comfortable control system. Between player movement, screen control, enemy targeting, hotbar switching, and menu navigation, I feel I'm moving my right hand from keyboard to mouse, and back again, every few seconds. Its . . awkward.

The more I read through my question, the more convinced I'm doing something wrong >_<. So anyway, do you use mouse and keyboard, or keyboard only? Do you find yourself moving your hands frequently? Have you remapped keys to something more convenient?

Hope this doesn't come off as too strange, haha . .

Thanks!

Well I have a really awesome graphics card and built my machine strictly to play FF. I've been playing FF since the prequel. As for mouse or keyboard, I like to just feel it out, switch things up, keep myself on my toes. Is gaming really about finding the easiest path? Embrace the challenge my friends. Cheers.

Perhaps you'd have an easier time playing FFXIV if you weren't trying to talk to yourself on the forum?

(Gamepad + Keyboard FTW)

You feel confused... LOL
I use Gamepad for all movement and harvesting, mouse for targeting and hitting icons on the screen, and keyboard for everything else...
I think that's three hands.... yep, yep.. :)
O. and a fourth hand to hold the keyboard and my coke.

Keyboard + mouse here! I started off XI with a controller on the PS2, but when i moved to PC i started using keyboard + mouse. And been using it ever sins. As soon as you get the feel of the keyboard + mouse combo you will never go back to controller. And if you go a step further gaming mouse and keyboard you will see gaming in a new light all together.

Anyone play with a wireless 360 pad with the official (but discontinued) MS wireless receiver? I have a question if you do...

That's my controller of choice for XI, and XIV when I played it at launch. However, back when I last played XIV (been over a year now), there was a really annoying problem - if your controller is idle for 5min, it shuts off to conserve battery power. In most games, no problem, just turn it back on and it works again. In FFXIV, you could turn the controller back on but the game would not register. You actually had to shut the game down and launch it again to get control back. Did they ever fix that?

I had this prob, its a bug with whatever controller software you use i believe, try plugging in another controller, as long as its usb(i use a steering wheel from probly the early 90's...), then plug in your wireless receiver, and try the game out, its annoying but it works.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm really not willing to do that ghetto-fix.

I'm using the official Microsoft drivers on Windows 7 64-bit, with an official MS controller. I have never had this issue with ANY other software, just FFXIV circa 2010-early 2011, which I assume was due to shoddy code from the rushed/incomplete release. Looks like XIV has had a lot of improvements since I've played it though, so I'm hopeful this may have been among the many fixes.

Anyone actually use that same setup (360 wireless controller/official MS receiver, official MS drivers) who can confirm the status of what happens when the controller goes to "sleep" in the current version of FFXIV?

I use the FFXIV controller made by SnakeEyes.

Amazon link

The only PS3 controller I know with onboard drivers. USB wired. $20. Oversized grips for my old man hands. Comes with a little FFXIV stencil on it. Perfect.

Thanks for the heads-up, that looks pretty cool. Do the hotkeys work well?

PS3 controller. Played FFXI for several years on PS, just feels natural to me. As it should, it's what the game was designed for.

Right hand stays on the number pad 90% of the time, left hand for hotkeys. I don't use the mouse at all while in combat or out doing stuff. I occassionally use it for navigating menus, but that's about it.

As little as I chat, I could see moving to a controller, but I think I'd be irritated scrolling through abilities on my bar/macros rather than just being able to click a hotkey. Matter of fact, I wish I could display multiple action bars at once rather than having to cycle through those too.

I had the exact same problem as you just yesterday. I've been playing FFXIV since it's release but I did take a 6 month break when the game sucked. I'm back and love it. I've been using a controller, just like I did in FFXI.

The controller works GREAT for combat classes and really well for ranged classes BLM/ARC... however, I find it to be less optimal for healing. Clicking on a name to case cure is faster than toggling 7 other names and then toggling the ability.

If you want to transfer FFXIV keyboard/mouse setup to be something very similar to other mmos (Wow/rift/swtor/ etc)... you need to make the following changes.

All three action bars are not visible at the same time as in other mmos. You need to assign two keys on your keyboard as the (up arrow) and the (down arrow).

Next, assign a key that has easy access as the "Enter" or "Confirm" key. For example, I assign F as the confirm key. When ever I target a door, or an npc, by pressing F, it acts as the "X" or "Confirm" button on a conventional console RPG.

Tab will be your default toggle of targets.

You can use the configuration menu to make your macro bars stay up instead of pressing and holding CNTRL/ALT.

Basically, you click on a target with your mouse and make sure you're locked on the target... Once locked on, you press 1-9 to activate what ever ability you want. If you need to activate another ability just press the (designated up or down arrow) to switch to actionbar 2 or actionbar 3. If you need to talk to an npc, you just press your designated "Confirm" or "Enter" key.

The rest is exactly like other mmos. If you need to access anythnig on the menu... just press "-", next to * on your number pad and it will open the menu. Then just use your mouse to click on whichever menu you want to get to (achievement, gear, attributes, journal, etc.).

Hope this helped more than confused.
