Alright, so I recently came back to FFXIV. I have no complaints at all thus far, and I was really enjoying the game itself. I didn't play a ton of hours each day because I have a really chaotic schedule, so I was taking my time with content and levels, and thus there was plenty for me to do and that was all well and good. Unfortunately, in the month that I've been back I have literally not talked to anybody in the game beyond a completely random handful (at best) of 2-3 exchanged sentences. As a result, I started to have a miserable time, despite being content with what the game itself was offering, I started playing less and less and now I haven't logged on in a week because I'm not really getting much of an MMO experience; it's really a one player RPG for me.

I tried looking for a LS in the server forums but no bites on my request and so this time, instead of creating a character on a server and than asking for invite to an LS on that server, I'm going to ask for a LS invite BEFORE I ever create a character and only create one once I am invited to a specific server. I don't mind starting over since, as I said, I didn't get very far before and I'd be much happier having a LS (an active and social one) and actually getting to experience the game as an MMO should be experienced - with other people.

All I'm asking for is a cool, active group that doesn't mind tutoring and helping along a relative noob and who will actually be willing to team up from time to time and can help point me in the right direction from time to time. I'm open to creating on any server. My usual play time is evening-late night EST, but I also get some days where I can be on from like 10am all the way until 4am. Mostly probably an evening to later night player though.

So someone, anyone, please, help me out so that I can fully enjoy this game. I've liked it so far since coming back and I think it would be a shame if someone who could be a happy subscriber ends up leaving the game just because they couldn't find a place in the community to experience it the right way.

Hi there. It may be easier to seek out a LS based on who they are instead of attempting a speed date roulette on forums.

http://www.ffxivpro.com/search/linkshell?server_id=19&recruiting=&social=1

That clickie is a list of LS on durandal that are social (and more). Most have websites, bios, and a way to apply or contact a leader. Durandal is currently capped with players so I find it a little hard to believe you can't find a shell. You could always /shout in Ul'dah-- but I'd recommend the link for starters.

(btw I'm a leader of the **** shell here.. If you are of that persuasion)

Not sure if you are the OP but again it's best to check out ffxivpro. Say "only goes so far". Even shouting is limited based on who's online (leaders) and the chat filters that are up-

And with how laggy Ul'dah is you probably won't find results in a /say or shout unless it's for an hour or two (while you craft, hint.. Be productive).

Also you guys are putting little effort into creating a bond that will be quite rewarding for you. Have you /checked people and asked them about their shell? Asked who to talk to to join? I'm not sure leaders will jump at the opportunity to connect with you or have you join when the only thing they know about you is you have a hard time being social with others.

I don't have a hard time being social with others, at all. I'm an extremely social person which is why playing the game without any social element isn't fun. The fact of the matter is, nobody wants to socialize with you in this game when you're level 1 or level 5, still hanging out by camp blackbrush and feeling your way through the early goings.

You've made a bit of an assumption with your postings here. I played FFXI for literally 7 solid years (with a couple of breaks) of the 9 or 10 it's been out. I've been in plenty of linkshells, including running a successful one for a while. I know how to socialize in game and have befriended plenty of perfect strangers who became long-time buddies in game, usually by first playing with them or getting involved in joking around in town somehow. Unfortunately, when you log in to FFXIV as a noob there is virtually no community to speak of. You don't make friends like you did in FFXI by having those early level 10ish parties/duos where you start learning new things together and discovering new areas as you spread away from the starting town. There isn't much banter in town that isn't just shouting for missions. It's not nearly as accessible. As a new player, nobody looks at you.

This whole "research the linkshells" to find out what they're all about business is unnecessary. If this were FFXI, for example, and I was looking to do something specific, it would be sound advice. Figuring out if a shell focused on HNM or end game, ran a lot of dynamis, was working on ZNMs for LS members, etc. would make sense. I'd have to know what the LS was about. I'm just looking for some kind of purely social shell to start out though, and while - sure - every social shell is different based on the members it has, I'm not sure there's much for them to be "about". Okay, you're shell has something particular it's about, but that's not relevant for me; I'm not looking for a "we're ***" shell or a "we're RPers" shell. I'm not looking for the Ul'Dah book club and I doubt there's a social linkshell where every member of the shell has listed their personal interests for me to review on their site to make sure they're the ones I'd most like to socialize with. I'm just looking for "we play FFXIV and shoot the sh*t, occasionally teaming up or whatever", which is what most social shells I ever participated in with FFXI were (without ever having to do any research into "what they were about") and which is what most guilds I've experienced in other MMOs have been like as well.

Sadly all this has really done is confirm what it looked like from the get go. Because there's such a lesser number of subscribers for XIV, the community in the game is just pretty poor. In the same time that I came back and started playing XIV without being able to find any kind of LS, I also started a from scratch character in XI and was given about 3 link pearls in 3 weeks. There's just a much more active social community in that game. I'm sure one exists in XIV for the people who are already a part of the game, but for a new player trying to find community in the game, there's not much of one in XIV. I mean, I started a thread asking for ANY social LS on ANY server and it's received over 130 views without a single (non sexual preference specific) invite. If I did this on the general forum for XI right now I'd have 4 servers and 7 shells to choose from in about 24 hours.

Sorry you are having such a hard time. But you are comparing every social aspect of this game to XI- and tgis is not XI. It's a more than fair to assume XIV doesn't have the community base that XI does or any other MMO that has either been around or had a decent launch. That being said- you are not going to find (without looking) a social shell. Unless you put some effort into it.

And, because you were expecting some type of silver platter, here are three of the LSs that I've seen around that you may want to research more into.

Carnival (I hear this is the largest social shell)
Mateja Hunter
Jim Telos
Surfer Carolina

Onion Corps
Maximum Panda (ask him about Kraken Club, which is/was the ZAM LS)
Notorious Zow

Judges
snokrystal Fenrisulven
Sammy Lou
