You need level 30 archer and level 15 lancer I believe. Once you have those then go to the archers guild in gridania and they will tell you about an old guy. Go talk to the old guy and you'll be sent on the quest that unlocks bard.

It's 30 Archer/15 Conjurer

And yes archer can be expensive but money is quite easy to make.

Anyone link a thread that shows way to make money? So far just the quests have been my source of income.

I am sure there are other ways, but it looks to me like at least one good option is crafting. Just started GSM myself and even though it is a rather monotonous process, leveling it seems pretty fast.

Thank you samosamo for correcting me. I posted this from my phone at work and didn't have the patience to find the info using my phone.

When it comes to making money, at this point doing levs will get you enough gil to purchase what you need. I'd suggest using warped arrows for anything that's not end game content. They cost only 2 gil each and they can be purchased from many NPC's located in each city. Archer/Bard are only expensive when it comes to purchasing cobalt arrows for end game content. On Gungnir, a stack of cobalt arrows can range from 37k-61k a stack depending on ward prices. If you are looking to use archer/bard as a main in the future for end game content, I'd suggest leveling carpentry, blacksmithing, botany, and mining. They will all eventually allow you to repair your weapon and craft your own arrows. This will save you loads of gil in the long run. Botany and mining is mainly so you can gather your own materials/shards for crafting.

EDIT: Also, I forgot to add that the things you gather, you can sell in the wards. You may not make much money selling thing you gather until very high levels, but it's a little something to add to your lev income. I tend to NPC items I gather unless its a hot item right after the patches. You'd be surprised how fast the gil adds up if you NPC the items you gather.

A few things that you can sell for good gil while leveling a War/Magic class/job:
_Skins/Fleece/Snurble Turft
_Scalekin/Spoken Blood
_High Quality material (+1)
_Materia made from Spirit Bonding, most are only worth selling from Grade III, IV though some like INT/ATK/M.ATK Grade II is good to sell. Only gears starting lvl 31+ would make G II, and only lvl41+ would make G III/IV, so don't bother with lower level gears.
_All-purpose bait like Rat Tail, sold for surprisingly good amount of gil
_Horns, usually sold for decent amount of gil
_Shard/Crystal

I've been getting a lot of cooking materials from the starter areas. Some guy randomly gave me 100k and made me some level 12+ gear. I am really loving this community.

rat tail was always the best bait for me. Hands down. If I was having trouble getting fish to bite for a leve and time was running down, I would get that stuff out and finish it pronto. It just had not very much give (bar goes down a LOT if you don't hook the fish)

When it comes to sitting around not doing anything for long periods of time, only being active for short windows, and marginal changes and sidegrades I'd say FFXI players were the perfect choice for politicians.
