Hi All,

So I recently decided to bite the bullet and get FFXIV to play with some friends. I participated in the Beta (which left a bad taste in my mouth) and had though I would never buy into it... so, now I have an older PC that can run the game but could use some TLC. I was sorting through the old threads about requirements and it was saying things like quad core or don't bother and GTX 4XX or higher or it won't run.

My Specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400
4 gig DDR2 333mhz
Geforce GTS 250
Windows 7 home premium 64bit

I ran the benchmark on low and got just under 3000 (not bad for a clunker!). I loaded up the game and it ran surprisingly well on standard, although the lag during cutscenes was horrible. So I am curious if any of the improvements over the last little while have reduced the specs that used to be required standard? I'll likely spend a little just upgrade the wife's old computer, as the MB can support a quad core I can find for sale. After it should look like:

AMD A8-3870K APU
8 GIG DDR3 1600
Radeon HD 5750

I have a feeling that should run the game at medium settings with little to no issue and will only cost me $180 to bring up to that level. If anyone has comments or suggestions, I am open to them as this upgrade might not happen for a little bit.

The benchmark is useless... Even at release I ran the game ok on SLI GTS8800s, I play with SLI'd GTX470's now and I'm sure you could get away with a cheap 550 or 560 or ATI equivilant on a budget. Obviously in the long term you're better off buying the best GPU you can afford, likely something in the $350+ range

Wait until your 30 day trial runs out and you decide you can't live without it. That will make sure you don't waste money on upgrades and gives you more time to save because it's going to cost you a fair amount to upgrade either of those to get decent settings.

The entry level GPU is a x770 if you're going with ATI or a GTX x70 It's the lowest I'd suggest for decent performance at medium settings.

Thanks for the responses. Mainly I want a quick little boost to the game to play alongside the wife (she is playing on our ASUS gaming laptop and it runs the game like a beast). I will likely update the GPU in a couple months. It isn't that I don't have the money now... it is more that if I spread out the spending a little they wife doesn't get as worked up ;)

That being said, she is in class every Thursday night for the next few weeks, so I might be able to run out and grab a new card and install it without her ever knowing :P

Now if only there was a way to upgrade the wife without her knowing... lol

Ha ha ha, the wife is pretty good for the most part... but we are supposed to be saving for a house. She'll have less to complain about if I get the promotion/raise that is being hinted at. I never count on anything though as things seem to change around my work way too quickly... at least it is a secure job.

I'd grab a GTX 560ti or something to that general level if you are on a budget, new they are starting to appear sub $200.00 now with the GTX 670 being released, 2nd hand they will probably be sub $150.00 very shortly.

For processors / motherboards its still hard to reccomend anything other than a intel i5-2500k and perhaps a cheaper but still quality Asrock z77 motherboard so you can be all set for a ivy bridge upgrade down the road should you desire to head in that direction, and then sell the old equipment instead.

Mmm, agree with Perrin there, the benchmark basically tests your computer's ability to play cutscences. Once you start running into the open world, cities and areas that have a lot of players will probably drop your performance a bit. Playing in full-screen will usually negate that though if you're not running SLI.
The HD5750 is a decent card, but saving for a GTX560ti is a substantial upgrade over that, and will help with your FPS :-)

Thanks all :) I haven't gotten to play much, but so far running through CS's and town with the HD5750 seems pretty good (most things are set to High, with some items dropped one below high... but none of the enhancements checked off)). I do see for some room for improvement though (get the occassional lag skip while running around near larger groups of people/NPC's). The major improvement is that the CS's run totally smooth, which was my first major hurdle. If I can find a GTX560ti kicking around for cheap I'll definitely look into picking it up. If not, I'll be ok for a while and then can just upgrade to something with even more power later. I may even just wait until they release more details on 2.0 (and hopefully a benchmark for the new engine).
