Card Game in FF XIV?Follow

Something positive for a change! Reading through the lodestone forums, I re-discovered an old thread
about in-game card games. While it takes the (imo) most boring example possible (Triple Triad), I think
having something similar in the game would actually go a long way towards creating an interesting
diversion and a real timesink at the same time (with comparatively little resources necessary; like, no
3D models or animations).

There are by far better examples of such minigames that Triple Triad, though. I guess few of you
guys have played Xenosaga, an all-in-all disappointment with one notable exception: it had the
most addictive and well-executed MINIgame I`ve ever seen in a game (mind you: I`m talking
about minigames here; of course there are digital adaptations of Magic, Pokemon and whatever).
I actually believe I enjoyed playing that minigame a good number of times more than the main
storyline. Here`s a peek http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgungA5f_ps&feature=relmfu .

Soo... for all of you who can: Please bump and like the associated main forum thread ;)

(Although I believe SE has something similar in store for 2.0 anyway).

It was already addressed in one of the letters from the producer live show things. They said it would be incredibly hard, but that if anyone on the dev team came to him with suggestions/ideas he'd continue considering them. He wants to do it, it's just a surprisingly hard thing to do in an MMO. He also talked about the rewards, that unless the rewards were something good enough or proportional then interest would be lost on it very quickly.

I think it would be interesting if they could set this up sort of like a poker tournament every once in a while. Have an event where you can join into a large round-robin style card game, with special event rewards for winners. I know it would be hard to accomplish since no one plays at the same time, and who knows how long it would take to complete... and you can't just log out if you are scheduled for a round. Still I think an 'event' style system for mini-games is the only way you can keep interest in it.

Does anyone remember the card game in FFXI? Neither do I :P For that matter, the card game that was released WITH FFXI that was based off the FF9 card mini-game (what was it called? something like Tetra Master...)? These all failed horribly because there was little to no reward/motivation to play. It can be super fun, but unless you get something from it, or it gets updated frequently with new material, it will never hold interest.

Card games are hard, but back in Ye Olde 256 color 2.5D WorldsAway, we had chess, checkers, and even a go board. Players interacted with the pieces in real time by just clicking on them, and there was a "board reset" button for when you were done. Not very sophisticated, and it couldn't tell if you were cheating or following the rules, but it was totally done in 1996 technology.

For card games, simply have a HUD widget on the screen that shows your current cards, just like the leves appear. If they pulled off one card in the form of a leve, pulling off 7 cards shouldn't be too much beyond that.

I think a card game could be fun. But I think trying to keep it low cost development would be a mistake. To someone who loves Triple Triad, this may be great. However if SE wants to implement something for a wider audience, they need to think big. The average community won't care what the development cost is. All they care about is something full of depth that is fun. And that it's something they can't regularly get from other games. You can find virtual card games anywhere, Consoles, PC, phones, etc. I'm not saying a card game couldn't be great. But it would have to entail some kind of collecting aspect outside card matches. Perhaps a blend of zeni, pankration, & Triple Triad? Bear in mind that no matter the minigame, gambling probably won't see the light of day.

I personally would prefer a multiplayer FFT within XIV because I like chess and strategy rpgs like Tactics Ogre, Vandal Hearts, etc. They could re-use overworld maps for region to region navigation. They could re-use in game character & landscapes & animations. The only extra work they would need is original textbox lore filling in plotholes or adding additional side stories to the main scenario. And retooling combat to a one per one ratio of turn based combat in this content, add movement grid lines.

Let's say they went the route of spending to create original pvp or pve content. Why not a Magitek Mayhem racing circuit using pod racing as a point of reference?

I posted an idea for this a long time ago. Ignore the other sections and read the spoiler under Magitek Mayhem.

I know some of my ideas seem a bit far fetched. But if I entered an arena and saw some racing battles in magitek armors. I would be screaming, where do I sign up? Remember, no matter what SE calls this side content. The players are never content with the lowest common denominator or easy route. They want meaty, highly replayable long term content. If SE wants to provide content to distract from the main ground rpg. Go hard or go home. Be it a card game or whatever.
