To play or not to play (or wait for 2.0)Follow

Hey guys,

So, I haven't played FFXIV since about a month after its disastrous release (Sept/Oct 2010?). I have heard about the second version coming out as well as various changes that have been made to the current game.

So my questions are: Is it worth giving it a try now? Or waiting until 2.0? Or perhaps not at all?

Can anyone give me a very basic list of some of the major changes thus far that have greatly improved gameplay over the past 1.5-2 years? (If any)

I played FFXI quite extensively for many years, and I'm always missing it. I was so excited for FFXIV and it was a huge letdown. I just loved FFXI so much, however, that I still hold out hope that FFXIV 2.0 will live up to it.

Is there still hope for this game? :/

Creepy, we have the same user-name prefix.

You can check the patch notes on lodestone to see if the game has improved to your liking.

I'm waiting to play personally, but I still have my subscription active to help fund 2.0

I won't put myself through the torture of playing it the way it is, but I am more than willing to contribute to it's hopeful future.

Nah, I've already looked through many of the patches. There are quite a number of them, many of which are filled with very minor changes. It's hard to find the big, basic changes that I'm looking for. Like:

1) Did they add chocobos?

2) Did they add an auction house?

3) Did they add a player search feature?

4) Does combat still feel slow/buggy/unresponsive?

5) Have they changed/removed the Leve system? Or are you still limited a paltry number every 24/48 hours.

6) Have they simplified the UI and made it less annoying to navigate?

7) Have they made armor repair easier/removed it?

etc.

You can access the lodestone and just read patch notes. there is a search feature on the lodestone, too.

1. Yes
2. No- But it's similiar if you "zone" to the Mercantile Ward (from any city to any city, which rocks) and go to item search (you can browse, but a 1 up on XI's AH is you can type the name of what you are looking for)
3. Yes, but it's horrible.
4. Combat is a bit more involved for placement. It's faster with "Chains" and most mobs link (only when you are in a party) so combat way faster and XP is almost godly at higher levels
5. Yes. You now receive an "allowance" of 8 per day and if you dont use them they roll over to a max balance of 99.
6. UI is less laggy- but you still need to navigate if you dont set hot keys to bring up menus
7. Yes. Instead of carrying mats to repair that are specific to the item you now need "Dark Matter" (which is level 1-5) to repair gear. Eventually Level 5 DM will repair 1-5, but for now you need to read who can repair what and with what grade of DM. NPCs now repair accessories and up to 99%. You can also request repairs for items in bazaar or items you are wearing. You just need the DM for items you wear. You set the reward for items in your own bazaar.

But to answer your question.. Shoudl I play or not.. Well.. personal preference. It looks like it will take 1-2 months to obtain your relic.. and there is plenty of crafting to do if you want to wait for 2.0 to level. Personally.. I'd play to stay ahead of the curve.. but that's just me.

1) Did they add chocobos?
Yes. Both to rent and to own.

2) Did they add an auction house?
No. But buying from the Market Wards is pretty similar to an Auction House. Selling, on the other hand, is still a throwback to a past we'd rather forget.

3) Did they add a player search feature?
Yes. It could use improvement, but it's there.

4) Does combat still feel slow/buggy/unresponsive?
There's a perceptible lag that can't be removed until 2.0 due to limitations of the current game engine.

5) Have they changed/removed the Leve system? Or are you still limited a paltry number every 24/48 hours.
You can now accumulate up to 99 Leves at one time, but storing them up still takes awhile.

6) Have they simplified the UI and made it less annoying to navigate?
Yes. It's much easier to use the UI for many common tasks like for repairs, selling to NPCs, or crafting items, etc. The process has been streamlined considerably.

7) Have they made armor repair easier/removed it?
Armor/Weapon repairs still exist, but not only has the repair process been streamlined among crafters, Repair NPCs at towns and Aetheryte camps can repair any damaged item up to 99% durability for a reasonable price that's scaled according to the level of the item.

As for whether or not you should play or wait, the number one reason to play now would be to collect and experience exclusive content that won't be available once 2.0 starts. They plan on ending the current version with an apocalyptic storyline that can't be experienced ever again after the "world ends." There are also "customer appreciation" collectibles that can't be obtained in 2.0, and there's a discounted pricing plan for those who subscribe for 3 months before 2.0 starts that will give you a special rate in the future. You'll also have the benefit of leveling characters before 2.0 starts and keeping whatever items and gil you collect.

But what you won't be getting now is FFXIV at its best. There have been improvements, but the bulk of what's really missing can't be experienced until 2.0. If that's more important to you, then I would suggest waiting until then.

*Cracks Nuckles*

1) Did they add chocobos? Yes. Right now you have to purchase your licence with Grand Company seals. Obtainable through GC missions or company leves.

There is also a Goobue Mount you can acquire only now, before 2.0 starts. It's huge (like, blocking your **** vision huge), free and comes with awesome music, and runs as fast as a chocobo. Kinda funny to see though. Legacy Campaign players will also get a second Chocobo designed by Animo himself when 2.0 starts.

2) Did they add an auction house? They're as close as they're going to get to it right now, which is pretty dark close.

Basically what they have is an AH system that requires you to place your Retainer in a Town's Wards in order to sell on it. Each Auction is limited by what town the Ward is in, but you can search any Ward from any city now. 2.0 Will feature a cleaner interface but the one we have right now is passable.

3) Did they add a player search feature?
It's still sub par and won't be really viable

4) Does combat still feel slow/buggy/unresponsive?
Compairatively it's better than the old system as the start. However they're is still lag between when an event is received by the server and when you see the action on your screen. After a while of playing you can compensate for it by planning your moves ahead of time.

5) Have they changed/removed the Leve system? Or are you still limited a paltry number every 24/48 hours.

You receive 8 Leves per day. If you do not use them, you store them, you can store up to 99 Leves and use at your leisure.

6) Have they simplified the UI and made it less annoying to navigate?

Not really. You can move around elements of the UI to your heart's content and customize your chat windows. There are also some shortcut icons that help, but the full 'menu' is still there. That's more to do with the engine of the game and will be heavily different in 2.0.

7) Have they made armor repair easier/removed it?

Repair materials is now a universal repair item called "Dark Matter" tiered into five "Grades" the higher level the item, the higher grade Dark Matter is needed to repair.
You can publicly request a gear repair (it's a status icon like bazaaring) and someone can repair your gear if you've the dark matter on your person (You automatically tip them out of your available gil while doing so. 500 gil for a grade 5 repair.)

Alternatively you can go to an NPC and select your gear to be repaired, but this alternative is much more pricey for higher level gear and only repairs to 99% instead of 100%.

Overall a lot was addressed, but their is still the haunting of the pathetic engine the game was built upon. No problems directly relating to that engine can be fixed until 2.0. The game is playable, (and enjoyable) in it's current state, as they've added a good deal of content and revamped fighting fairly thoroughly. However it will never be full sail until it replaces the engine and it knows it.

Thanks for the informative answers guys, very helpful :). I think I'm going to give the game a go again soon. In the meantime I thought up some more questions:

8) Can anyone comment on the storylines? Always loved the long cutscenes/stories from FFXI. I assume SE has at least kept their act together when it comes to interesting storylines in this game? Are they just like FFXI's cutscene style?

9) How are the environments? I recall huge maps that seemed to repeat themselves over and over (and each map seemed highly similar even though it was a different area o_O) This is probably an engine issue - but I thought maybe they added new areas?

10) One thing that also bugged me - mobs seemed scattered all over the place. They wouldn't respawn or did so very irregularly. I'd run around and not find any mobs at all for a long time, yet didn't see any other players around in the area.

EDIT* 11) Also, how about server population? Is it at times too low or does it vary greatly by server?

They're like FFXI's cutscene style, and it's actually shaping up fairly nicely. The first section (up to level 15) is kinda bland but the Grand Company plots are actually intirguing. The last polt scenes they came up with on the 1.22b patch is both nostalgic and gripping.

9) How are the environments? I recall huge maps that seemed to repeat themselves over and over (and each map seemed highly similar even though it was a different area o_O) This is probably an engine issue - but I thought maybe they added new areas?

They haven't changed much yet. They can't really redo the maps without redoing the engine first, so yes, you are still dealing with enviroments that repeat themselves. However SE seems to be aware of this and have been making quest objectives take you to the more unique areas of the maps. So think if it mainly like real life. Many major roads can end up looking the same, but they're dotted with gems worth seeing.

10) One thing that also bugged me - mobs seemed scattered all over the place. They wouldn't respawn or did so very irregularly. I'd run around and not find any mobs at all for a long time, yet didn't see any other players around in the area.

This depends on the monster and the camp. Some can argue that some of the monsters in the game re-spawn TOO fast. Others, too slow. In the end, there are varying spawn rates for monsters and various camps for them as well. IF you're running into a camp that's heavily devoid of mobs and seeing a high level person around, it's probably because they're hunting that particular mob. As far as monsters for EXP, typically EXP fodder are plentiful, and if any are being over-camped, there's always Leve mobs which only you can kill.

11) Also, how about server population? Is it at times too low or does it vary greatly by server?
Varies between servers and times. Excalibur seems to be an afternoon/night server, with EST mornings being fairly quiet. Aegis is getting a lot of attention lately and I hear Balmung is a roleplaying server that's quite active.

Wait for 2.0.

I know a lot of people who are waiting for 2.0 and its a good time to return when a load of others are and you can start fresh with people who are on the same level as you.

I quit a while ago and will return on 2.0 :)

I'll tell you what I'm telling my friends:

If you HATED it before or never played it, wait until 2.0 because it will be a fresh game.

If you kind of liked it but had gripes, but still played, return. MANY amazing bandaids are in place, but there's a lot of hope, even for current players who never stopped, for 2.0.

The Band-aids make it playable, but it is better to not even see it in the current state, given that we're only a few months from 2.0.

In an interview, Yoshi-P stated that both versions will release at the same time. Alpha is slated for September, followed quickly by beta and launch. No specific time has been stated outside "This Winter" but they did say that no matter what, they will not release it until they are at 100%.

So expect a delay or two, because the last thing they want is to rush this one..

Game Watch Interview June 2012 wrote:

Also does this run on PS3?

Yoshida: Of course. This time we are going to release PC and PS3 version at same time. However the texture resolution and MIPMAP size will drop a little. This is for sure. If I said it will run the same it will be fraud. But we are making the development for this parallel pace, aside from that the LOD distance will be closer compared to PC’s high spec. We are also making adjustments where you have to look very carefully to distinguish High model, Mid Model, Low model difference. So for example when taking an screen shot at close range if you set character display at this range there wouldn’t be much difference with PS3 or PC.

You’re going to go that far huh, how much of PS3 development is completed?

Yoshida: For and idea the engine is same so only thing left is optimizing and tuning level. For PS3 tuning level it’s here, and PC high end it’s going to be here, it’s deciding that. So say PC graphics tuning is at 85% then PS3 version will be 55%

So there is something that already runs?

Yoshida: Yes there is. In development monitor A shows PC version B monitor showing the PS3 version while working. It won't mean anything if we just making the PC version only. If we make the PC versions graphics outstanding you will hear outcry from PS3 version (laugh) We are currently in state where we’re saying “hold on hold on, we’re optimizing right now”

Later on the last update 1.23 is being planned but after that is the server going down once to move into beta test?

Yoshida: For that part first we will have alpha test around end of September. That is to test the server load at that time. AFter that we’ll go into beta but after receiving feedback we are planning to increase the game to see how much first impression we get and depending on how critical it is we have to decide how long to stretch the current version.

1.23 and Alpha test is going to run at same time, is that correct?

Yoshida: 1.23 release would be earlier; however just like now there is plan for 1.23a or b also.

Server is going to close once then change to 2.0?

Yoshida: No I think alpha test and current version will run same time.

When’s the start date for official service

Yoshida: I don’t think I put a date, we just have a line but want to say by this Winter. I think by winter lots of stuff should be together.

So you’re not in a hurry for when to start the official service

Yoshida: I’m not rushing, this time the games quality is everything so like I said earlier the 3 pillars specially if the gameplay is not working no matter how great the graphics or story is no one would play it. Other than that is the user interface.
