Whether you're staring at squares you're double clicking, or staring at the HP bars and hitting CTRL 1, you are still staring at something besides the monster directly in front of you.

Now, the other person I watched during this raid, the tank, was arguing vociferously with the team on Skype or whatever, and pretty much ignored most of his UI mods and just ran around and mashed macros.

For me, the UI not only needs to be intuitive, it needs to be completely controllable on the keyboard alone. I dislike using the mouse (even with my fancy verticle mouse, my wrist hurts after extended mouse use) and I'd rather not use it at all if I can help it. Same with the controller. When I play FFXI, it looks more like I'm playing the piano on my keyboard Smiley: lol

I'm not sure what your point is here. Aside from the token Patchwerk fight in a raid, there are no encounters you could heal solely by staring at your grid interface. Your priority as a healer is to keep yourself alive. You can't heal allies laying on your face so your positioning in relation to the mob, your environment(fire on the ground) and other things are more important than your allies. You can move the grid to wherever you want it anyway so you could float it above the mob's head if you wanted it there.

I can understand your need to be able to play solely with the keyboard, but I'm sure you understand that removing mouse from the equation should put you at a disadvantage.

Why? List one valid reason why not having your hand on a mouse should put you at a disadvantage?

In a word, precision. I could go on for days about the benefits of mouse vs keyboard only. At the end of the day it's a preference, but assuming fully functional mouse controls; you cannot be as precise or as fast as someone with a mouse if you do not use one.

What I meant by should was that if a game is optimized for using a mouse, then it's going to be an advantage over a keyboard or controller. Scrolling through inventory with the mouse wheel and using drag and drop for items would beat spamming the arrow and enter keys easily. Using the mouse for controlling the camera is also much faster and more precise when it's implemented correctly.

How about default white?

In forums like these, there's no point in personalizing your text, as it just gets viewed as annoying and earns you quick rate-downs.

People get rated down just for having an opinion that differs from someone else. I don't think font color would save me from the karma bombing Smiley: frown

I'm a touch typer and I can hit 100 WPM when I'm in the zone. (So I type faster than some people talk...) However, I have wrist problems which preclude the use of a traditional mouse, and I have to use a vertical mouse - which does have as many buttons as a gaming mouse, come to think of it - but which is still awkward to use for gaming even though I'm used to it for web surfing and such.

I guess my question is, why does a game have to be optimized for just one method of input alone? Why not have a UI set up for each type of player?

Maybe not form players.

But apparently misuse of color is enough to get your post nuked by a mod, rather than just rated down.

No no no, absolutamente NO! It doesn't have to be optimized for only one method of input. I never said that. The game should be optimized for all input it accepts. I'm just pointing out that if all methods are optimized, there will be things that you can do that you can do faster or more efficiently with a mouse than you could with a keyboard or controller.

Oh, okay. As long as we're on the same page here. Really, though, there's very little that someone can do in FFXI that I can't do just as fast or faster on my keyboard. The camera controls in FXIV gum me up though; I can't control the camera and my character one handed any more.

I agree 100% but XI is a game that has worthless mouse control. XI and XIV are the exceptions that make it impossible for me to say that mouse wins(for people who it doesn't cause pain to use) hands down. The main reasons why I said should instead of does. Both games have really poor control and for players used to playing MMO, FPS, RTS or other games that require precise mouse control... well, it's just a mess.

So long as the Keyboard does not have a significantly noticeable advantage, things would be good if all controller schemes are optimized.

Looking at this realistically, the keyboard controls will be improved, yes, but I bet there will be some 'balancing issues' that will tick them off.

I agree in both cases. Back when we used to play FFXI, my friend would "command line" most of his spells and never missed a beat (he was a magnificently quick typist, obviously). And then there's the camera control of FFXIV... why even put them all the way on the other side like that!?
