I was browsing the official forums and ran into this topic.
http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/30143-Targeting-options.-Please-add-it%21/page11

I offered my own idea on gamerescape. I think my idea would work well for gamepad & keyboard only users. I believe that any targeting system involving cycling is a backstep. Much more noticeable in lagfests.

What changes if any would you like SE to do in 2.0 in regards to targeting?

I wish it would work just like FFXI. I have yet to find an MMO that I can as intuitively figure out ahead of time what tab targetting will pick.

Some games are so bad, I have to actually use the mouse to target enemies, and I hate having to do that...

It simply stems from the fact I've been playing MMOs for over 10 years, and that I have played them, for the most part, with both hands on the keyboard.

Because chatting (text-based) has always been my favoured way to communicating in those games, and that I am used to typing with both hands, it means I often find myself playing without any hand on the mouse. Hitting tab with my left hand's pinky or hitting "0" on the keypad with my right hand's thumb is a lot more energy efficient than moving my arm to my mouse, locate my cursor on screen, move it around to the target I want to pick, and clicking it, then putting my right hand back over the right-hand side of the keyboard.

I don't hate mouse, I hate the mix of chatting and mouse-based controls. It's the same way I hate using a gamepad in PSO/PSU/PSO2 and in FFXI/FFXIV: It's way too much of a pain to put my controller down, set both hands on the keyboard to chat, then grab my controller back.

I assume that if I was a VoIP user, I wouldn't have any of these worries.

Alas, I hate VoIP, so I have to deal with tab targetting.

Loud and clear. The game I'm playing now doesn't use tab targeting so I ripped it off and tossed it in the trash. I then proceeded to dig it out of the trash and replace it after realizing that I can now use it as a bound key. It's used for vent or mumble now, go figure.

A gamepad withan extra dedicated tab target button could pull off this effect, But there is no way around a gamepad's limited buttons for easy typing unless they used a quasi wiii-u mmo gamepad. I prefer icon targeting over cycling, mouse, or tab targeting.

They do have smartphoneish keypads for gamepad gamers if you like being completely free of the keyboard. Personally I just find it easier to mouseover a mob and select it. Tab targeting and 'closest-to-furthest' mob targeting never made sense to me. It works alright in XIV because you rarely need your target selected right now right now, but it's hard to go back after not having to rely on it.

Yes, targeting is still bad for me.

I have to change the settings frequently for the situation. I hate that I cant take off subtargeting for Attack Magic but leave it on for healing and raises. I was able to aleiviate some of it by switching "Target Currently Engaged Mobs Only" on, so if i need to target an enemy I can go into active mode and only tab through enemies.

The larger problem is that the tagetting is determined by camera positon not character like in FFXI. I've gotten the hang of moving my camera to the thing i want to target but i wish it wasnt this way.

Targeting is still a huge issue. Especially in fights like the primals which have a variety of different targets. I'm not sure how they should fix it, though. I just hope that they do.

For Primal battles (as a mage), I have to switch to the up/down targetting (to switch from Enemy/Friendly/etc).
For hamlet def, I have had to resort to Select (the Activate/Ok gamepad button) to target the closest target, because of mobs/players bouncing in and out of view/moving. The higher paced action over 11 makes targeting a lot more difficult (and add the fact that their targeting Z-Order is still less than desirable).
At least party targeting is still easy (up/down in the party list, not to get confused... as it some times does if I switch targeting types with the Enemy/Friendly targeting).

I think the biggest problem at this point is that by them constantly trying different things for targeting, they are now offering too many conflicting options, with different ones better in different situations, leading to more confusion as to which targeting mode you are on, which one works best when, and remembering which is which, and what to expect from which.

One or two all encompassing solutions would be best, and, yeah, the current state of the game (at least from having dealt with it for so long) is still a pain, and can be annoying.

I guess if you can remember, when you target you go left to right/right to left with no distance modifier, you can be fine.

Personally, if they would just add the distance modifier for the current target in, it could be much simpler... However, until they can successfully render everything near you, I can see a lot more problems with that...

If using the mouse + tab is so difficult then why don't people have targeting difficulties in every other AAA MMO on the market?

I'm not being snide, I'm just wondering. When I played Rift, WoW, Tera, and a slew of other MMOs, targeting never even entered into my mind. I type, use key binds, and use the mouse to turn the whole time this is happening. I'm not sure I understand what people are complaining about when they compare targeting in FFXI (arguably ******) to other games.
