Request: A Guide to targeting?Follow

I have to say this game grows more and more on me every day but I feel I am drastically missing something in regards to parties. Mainly, how to efficiently target, switch targets, and how my hands should be placed.

I started off on targeting type A, and for the life of me everyone says to use type B, but every time I do, I either die, or kill my party because I cant figure out how to switch targets. I feel a large part of this has to do with the way I play with my hands. To preface, in FF11 I played with my right hand on the number pad, and that is how i moved for the most part. I have played other MMO and when I do its WASD on the left hand and IJKL on the right hand (no mouse or number pad).

My question, is would someone (or multiple someones) explain to me they way they use the targeting system?

Specifically, with targeting type b:
How do you target the next enemy? I am used to F8 targeting the nearest hostile NPC, but obviouslly that wont work here with 8 people parties so its F12 right?

How do you cycle targets? Typically I use tab and shift+tab but occasionally i break down and click it with the mouse when i get frustrated that i cant target it.

Once you have a target and have engaged it, how do you easily switch to a second target (say a mob that has jumped on the whm)? Currently I mash ESC three to four times to clear my target then manually click with the mouse on the target since nothing else seems to reliably target the enemy RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. It most of the time will target the NPC that is right behind me, but filling half my screen.

I just feel like there is some super secret way to play that I am completely missing because left hand on the keyboard, and right hand on the mouse feels like it might work if the camera wasn't so awful with the mouse look.

When I'm anything but whm I put the enemy filter on and cycle with the left and right arrows. I move with the numpad too and it seems pretty easy. As healer, I go back to target mode A or whatever it is and just click my party members in the party list. I also turn off sub targeting, it speeds things up

Is sub targeting the reason you Hit F to pull your weapon, target the enemy, then hit enter to begin auto attacking?

If I could just go straight to hitting F to turn attack on, that would help a lot too.

This is one of the issues a lot of people have with the game in it's current state. There are many actions you want to perform in game that require too many steps(more than necessary anyway) and hopefully it's something they will address with 2.0 version.

Its personal preference and all, but yes we need to educate WoW players that this is OUR game, these are Characters and not Toons. Time to beat that into them one at a time.

I prefer to use a controler when playing the current incarnation of FFXIV, targeting is one of the main reasons.

I'm not sure what the equivilants are, but the same buttons I used to navigate menus on my controler, also dictate my targets.

If I press my confirm button from no target, it will select the nearest applicable target, with me as the lowest priority. There are target settings to specific which type of targets, enemy, ally, and ALL are options, I'm not sure how to set that up.

Up and down on my navigation buttons select members of my party and rotate them as such. It will always start by targeting me.

Left and right target visible allies/enemies in the direction I press.

Now, onto your specific questions.

Quote:
How do you target the next enemy?
I select my target setting to "Enemy" and select left to right on my D pad when I am not 'selected' to a target. This should be replicated by any menu navigation buttons you have for menus. Arrow keys, I believe.

Quote:
How do you cycle targets?
Depending on the direction my target is to my character's front, left and right on the menu navigation.

Cycling allied targets is up and down.

Disengage Camrea lock, (Hit cancel once) and cycle targets normally. Again, having your target settings set to "Enemy" works wonders in this case.

Alternatively, if the enemy is behind you, hit cancel twice, one to cancel lock, one to cancel select, turn yourself (and camrea) about, and press attack again to target the first applicable target, with luck, it's the enemy you're aiming for. It's not guarenteed though.

I've gotten a lot of pratice with this fighting Level 22 Burbles as a 50 DRG in La Nosca. They die in one hit, so it's most effective when I quickly cancel and relock onto my next target for farming. I've actually gotten so efficient at it that I've been mistaken for an RMT once.

That's a good post Hyrist. Exactly how I did it.

It is odd that you need settings and targeting types when other games have seemless targeting, even in large groups. Where did they go wrong that this got so complicated?

OP, In order to quickly target the enemy you want, first align the camera view such that the enemy is just to the left or right of center screen. That way, pressing right or left will get you directly to the enemy you want without searching through the whole mob. Basically, Left/Right enemy targeting uses center screen as a starting point.

So do you keep your right hand on the number pad, on the arrow pad, or on jkli?

I tried using the number pad, but then i have no real control over the camera.
I tried JKLI and just moving my hand over to the Arrows and that seems to work well.

Honestly, UP/DOWN to change the target type was the part I was missing from target type b. Now Its just dealing with the annoying things that are part of the game (esc 2-3 times to change targets) that hopefully get fixed or changed one day.

The controls for keyboard will be revamped and completely customizable for A Realm Reborn, according to Yoshida's personal promise. He's even gone so far to say that the UI for Controler and Keyboard will be different.

That said, I'd recommend you plug in your Xbox controller into your computer and config it using the external FFXIV config tool. Most people I've mentioned to and tried it, have found it far more comfortable than the keyboard set up. Having the full of the controls access to my fingers on a controller that I can reach across with either thumb makes things quite easy to manage, even if it takes me a moment longer to pull off combos sometimes.
