Here is my current setup:

MSI 790FX-GD70 mobo
AMD 965 @ 3.8
Adata 8gb 1333 ram
Seagate 1.5TB 7200
Crucial 256gb SSD (have it here and installing soon)
MSI Hawk 5770 oc'd to 950/1250

My question is this. Would it be worth a $50 investment to buy a second 5770 and crossfire them? (I have a friend that has one he's willing to sell me) My board supports up to 4 cards in x8 or 2 in x16. So if I'm not mistaken, I would get full benefit from both cards. I would like to run the game on a 23" wide screen with native res. @ 1920x1080.

I know the best option would probably be to save up another 200 or so and get a single, more powerful card but that is not an option and won't be for quite some time.

Thanks in advance for any input.

You don't even have to save another 200. You can get a card that's around 120 bucks that'll probably do the job of both of them in crossfire. Most of the cards that came out around the time FFXIV launched were around the 199-299 range. They've mostly dropped to around 120-150. Check out the benchmarks of the gpus on passmark.

I did. Crossfire'd 5770's perform just almost as well as a single 5870, and in some cases it tested higher.

Thanks for a response, GDLYL

i was under the impression that crossfire for this game didnt actually work. ya you could crossfire it, and it would say it was crossfired, but there was no improvement over a single card.

was this fixed? if so ill have to change my settings.

I had heard this wasn't scaling like it should be also. Granted, it was a long time ago and I'm an nVidia owner so I haven't kept up, but even then... with a new graphics engine coming in a few months it's probably best for the OP just to wait and see what kind of results people are getting.

Its personal preference and all, but yes we need to educate WoW players that this is OUR game, these are Characters and not Toons. Time to beat that into them one at a time.

I had 5770s in my old gaming PC, they are nice and they are worth the money but they may not cut it for this game. Plus I'm unsure of how well this game deals with cross fire.

AMD recently put in price cut on the 7850's they are going to be 229 base price - which is above your stated budget. But you maybe able to pick one up on ebay by end of Sept below 200 (actually just looking at ebay today you can get a 7850 if you are patient for about 170, I just got a gtx 570 for 150). 2.0 is still at least 6 weeks away I'd say be patient wait for the price drop on the 7800 series and that way you will not have to upgrade again for quite some time. Additionally the 7850 is great for over clocking, so they have longer longevity.

As a rule I try to always upgrade at least 2 generations of cards to get best bang for buck but if you just want something soon, new under 200. I'd say check out the 6850 for 150 (dont do the 6770 its pretty much a rebranded 5770).
